Edit: Note though that I am using the outer frame part only, not the slats that the mattress would normally rest on. Don’t know how well that holds up.

I have two of these ZINUS Suzanne Metal and Wood from Amazon. If you’re looking at Ikea, you might like this – metal frame, so it feels really solid – I’ve been really happy with them (2 years). I was skeptical of ordering something like this, but it’s pretty much just flat-pack metal frame and simple headboard – not much that can go wrong.

Mattress – Zinus sells them on Amazon, but I have no idea their quality.

We have a Casper (“Original”), but it’s more than your budget alone. They do have a cheaper one that would possibly work for you. However, our “Original” feels very soft to me compared to our 12+ year old Tempur-Pedic – the Casper is serviceable, but I do like the heft of the Tempur-Pedic.

I haven’t tried any other mattress in a box companies – but they are a big business, so there must be a lot of people who like them.

Beware of mattress return policies, however, if you want to be a conscientious shopper – yes most of the online stores have good return policies and they favor you as the consumer – but the mattress very possibly ends up being trash if you do return it – when I researched this before, in some states they can donate the mattresses, but in others they have to just trash them. I can’t find documentation on where Virginia falls on that, though.

Amazon! We’ve put together a lot of IKEA furniture in our years together, and this bed was a freaking breeze. It’s super sturdy and has been such a great steal! *fwiw– our mattress is from the same company and it’s awesome too!

I bought my “Suzanne Low Profile Platform Bed Frame” off of Zinus 1.5 years ago, and it’s been awesome. Pretty much exactly what you described- minimalist, headboard, (optional footboard, as well), low to the ground. The hardwood is sturdy and really gives it a premium feel, and the black metal framework gives it a modern look. Easy setup, and no problems with longevity so far

have you look at the zinus suzanne? i can’t comment on it since i don’t have, but i have heard nothing but good things about it (and zinus in general) in reviews and on this sub

My package of screws only had the two lengths, there was no medium length. I’m not sure if you have a different bed than I do but I have this one. I’m realizing it’s probably a different bed frame but as far as bolts go, the medium length would most likely be 1 1/4 inch length by that 1/4 inch diameter. That’s one of the most common mid-length bolts in that size between those other two lengths.

Depends on the slats, Ikea slats are bowed/curved. If you put plywood, it’s not going to sit flush.

If you have a Zinus bed like this one then you don’t need anything unless you have a tempurpedic because the slats are well supported, the gap between them is 2.5inches which is something most mattress warranties are okay with. The slats are straight, in one piece and supported by a support beam in the middle which has it’s own legs.

I like the Zinus bunkie board because it has metal periphery and has decent support beam as well which should rest on the Ikea support bed. TBH, I am not a fan of Ikea beds that don’t have enough “legs”. Like a lot of Zinus beds got 9 legs which helps the weight to be distributed across them vs Ikea which often have just 4 legs with a support beam that attaches to footboard and headboard.

So maybe a teak color and clean lines, etc….Scandi meets industrial.

I recommend a bed without a footboard as that will close in the bedroom..

this one which is pretty simple and inexpensive. The wood and metal combo looks very masculine but is still versatile. Simple, clean lines. Nothing frilly or unnecessary, but gives off a “grown-up that cares” vibe and not a “college kid that bought the cheapest bed they could find” vibe

The Zinus bed frames are really affordable on Amazon – we just got a king and it was 500. If you’re looking for a queen mattress and a queen bed – think you can come in under that 1k budget for both.
