If your box spring is an actual box spring with springs (you did say its 20 years old, so totally possible) — you can easily modify it so that it does have the correct support. You can do that by simply adding slats like this or just a plywood board on top.

We have this. Very low profile. I think the slats are about 3” apart.

Have you considered trying to build it yourself? The construction seems relatively simple. You could pull this off with hand tools and a drill. Might be a good weekend project. You can buy pre-made wood slat kits for beds, or a steel platform insert. Crate and Barrel states this bed is made from unfinished Teak, the dark version in Oak with a mocha oil finish. If you can find dimensional lumber of these species locally or online, the square pieces can be achieved by gluing together two 1×2’s.
To simplify the joinery/assembly, you could use bed rail brackets like this, and dowels and dowel centers to make the headboard and other permanent joints.
