It does work best with a tablet, but for a beginner there’s no way I would suggest getting a Cintique, those are not needed absolutely at all!

I don’t even use a screened tablet and I have been using Clip Studio for years. You can get screenless tables for less than $50, and I know its a bit more of an investment, but you’re really going to be able to get the most out of the program if you have even just a basic tablet like a Huion or XP-pen

You can get cheaper ones, but this is what I’d really recommend as it has the best drawing size for your money:

https://www.amazon.com/XP-PEN-Star03-Graphics-Battery-Free-Signature/dp/B017ATNRTY/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=xp+pen&qid=1607104996&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyWUxCNlQxNEM1MFk5JmVuY3J5cHRlZElk…

If not that one and you want to look for yourself, there are a lot more options than just Wacom anymore, I do recommend looking for a battery free, chargeless pen. Some pens for tablets need to either be recharged or use batteries, the battery one i have used a few times, I never liked because I really felt like the weight of the pen was thrown off, and I hate the idea of my pen going dead while in the middle of drawing, so I always suggest looking for the power free pens, which means only your tablet needs power, and that comes from your PC if the tablet isn’t Bluetooth.

I’ve used this XP Pen tablet for the past 2 years. It has served me well.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017ATNRTY/

It’s $50.99 with tax after applying the 20% off coupon (which is what I paid 2 years ago apparently, so not much of a sale 😒).

My only dislike has been that the drawing surface gets micro-scratches from heavy use, since the pen nibs are plastic. It doesn’t really bother me and I like knowing that I’m getting my money’s worth and I’m using the tablet as intended.

My previous tablet was a smaller XP Pen one. Before that smaller one, I had a Genius(?) brand tablet that was also 6″ x 10″ that lasted me over 6 years.

Definitely shop around, though. There are much nicer tablets available now.

This is the tablet I’m using (https://www.amazon.com/XP-PEN-Star03-Graphics-Battery-free-Signature/dp/B017ATNRTY ). I prefer it over wacom for its size and price (used wacom before). There is some minor issues with drivers when using certain software (Paint Tool SAI specifically) but aside from that it works fine from the get go.

Here’s a video I did recently where I do a very quick and simple review (first ever review). https://vid.me/lQ58D
