I’ve really liked the Whirlpool Whispure large room air purifier. Any with a true a hepa should work well. The bigger the surface area of the screen the more it can filter. I’ve seen it available from Sears, Amazon, and Bed Bath and Beyond. Hepa filters work well for mold since mold is smaller than regular pollen. Changing the HVAC filters every few months and getting high quality helps too. The good ones are MERV 8-13. The cheap ones are usually 2-4. Maybe see if your landlord would reimburse or give a rent credit you if bought your own and sent him the receipt.

In cities like Portland, there is a lot of outdoor mold. So, it’s not unusual to have mold allergies in the AM, but this often comes from the trees even with your windows shut. I live in NC, and there is a ton of outdoor mold in the summer and the fall as well the winter when we get high rain levels.

I have bunnies in the process of shedding winter coats, and the Whirlpool Whispure has been fantastic for me. It catches an AMAZING amount of dust and pet hair. It is somewhat large, but I’ve never felt like it was in the way. It is very quiet, I often forget that it is running.

I’ve owned mine for five years without any hint of trouble. The unit has two filters: a pre-filter keeps larger debris out of the HEPA filter. Both are easy to clean and replace. I vacuum the pre-filter with an upholstery attachment, and an indicator light tells me when it’s time to buy a new HEPA filter. In my experience, the HEPA filter is also somewhat cleanable if your goal is to catch larger dust particles (I don’t need it to treat allergies or asthma or anything). Just don’t rinse it, because wet HEPA filters are great breeding grounds for mold.

*Edit because I’m slightly OCD about synonyms.

A little over your budget but worth it. Best air filter that wasn’t super expensive in multiple tests. Whispure 510

i HIGHLY suggest this whirlpool one i’ve had one for years and it’s incredible. The pre-filter will catch more cat hair than you can imagine exists and the main filter is true HEPA. It’s expensive but the airflow and ability is unrivaled.

I use a combination of these two, they help cancel out each other’s outlier random tones

Ugh I hate using this text box as it does not like copy/paste and it just deleted what I wrote 🙁

Try #2 – The RabbitAir is really good! I reviewed it years ago and I love the auto feature for the fan to switch depending on the amount of particulates/smoke in the air. Biggest expense is not the upfront cost but the continued need to replace the expensive filters (priced like ink for inkjet printers, stupidly high for what they are). I reviewed a Whirpool also that I bought and had about the same level of cleaning as the rabbitair but no auto features. I actually found it on Amazon – https://www.amazon.com/Whirlpool-Whispure-Purifier-Cleaner-AP51030K/dp/B00440EKRG – I used that one in my basement as a lower cost alternative to the RabbitAir (had to send review unit back to them). If I had the money, I would definitely get the rabbitair though just for the auto feature.

NONE of them will totally eliminate the odor, if you smoke cigars more than once a week or so. Keep a bowl or 2 of white distilled vinegar in the room for odor.

I like the DIY solutions like u/Fishon888 linked to since the filters are a lot cheaper and so are the fans. Make sure you are safe with the fan though as you will be blocking a lot of air from getting into the fan itself and the motors are not made to work super strenuously for a long time. Also there is no auto adjusting feature that you can just let it run and it will adjust itself to the volume of particles.

I always wanted to try one of the BlueAir ones but just never bothered due to cost.

I have never used smart outlets before and just purchased two Samsung SmartThings Smart Outlets.

Can I use them to control Whirlpool Whispure Air Purifier, HEPA Air Cleaner, AP51030K? That air purifier does not have a remote, and usually, to turn it on, I have to manually push the power button on the machine. Thank you.

I’m sensitive to it, so I do my soldering in front of a large air filter (https://www.amazon.com/Whirlpool-Whispure-Purifier-Cleaner-AP51030K/dp/B00440EKRG). It’s not as good as a real fume hood that vents outside, but it works well enough for me…
