The Yamaha receiver is good for an around $40 thrift shop pickup especially if it has a remote.

The Phillips speakers are designed to be used with the Phillips mini CD receiver they came with as a set. The 2 speakers each have a single small 3″ full range driver. The tweeter top detail section is fake, there is not a tweeter behind it, same as these Logitech. The third speaker is just a woofer box, not a subwoofer since it won’t be making any sub bass. You can connect just the speakers directly to the Yamaha receiver however they are very basic and will be a big sound quality bottleneck for a turntable and the Yamaha receiver. You could try cutting off the DIN connector and replacing it with RCA connectors however it’s not really worth the effort. Consider getting some better than cheap mini system speakers when you can.

The Pioneer PL-990 does have a built in phono stage preamp. The preamp on/off switch is under the mat and platter. Spin the platter until you see it through the opening in the platter.

Those inexpensive indoor outdoor plastic cabinet speakers may be a sound quailty bottleneck for even the entry level PL-990.

Even $65 Dayton Dayton Audio B652 AIR may be a decent enough upgrade.

Or other passive speakers on sale:

You’re welcome.

Adding more speakers? The turntable and amp are 2 channel, just 2 speakers. Movie and TV surround sound would be more than 2 speakers with a 5+ channel AV receiver.

The 3″ Covo are just rather small for main speakers, but are decent small side surround speakers for a small room.

The better Micca speakers to get are the larger 4″ MB42X or the newer improved 4″ RB42 that go lower, either for a small size room or desktop setup.

Or some larger 5″ or 6″ speakers under $150:

Better mini amps are Nobsound, Fosi, SMSL, Dayton Audio.

The Sony speakers are good when they are on sale for $75 once or twice a year.

If the Sony speakers are not on sale then Jamo S 803 ~~$229~~ $109.

Or also for less cost than the Sony speakers, Wharfedale Crystal CR 4.2 ~~$249~~ $149 or Amazon Black or Walnut.

Better to spend the $129 on a better turntable or speakers and amp instead of a $129 phono stage preamp that will be bottle necked by the rest of the entry level starter setup. An external phono stage preamp can be added later.

What is a Craigslist area I can search for used options for you? PM if not replying here.

New stereo receiver: Yamaha R-S202 ~~$149~~ $119 with Bluetooth.

Or smaller powered speakers for a small room or desktop setup, 4″ Jamo S 801 PM ~~$299~~ $149.

Also if you are not using the Music Hall to play 78’s an exchange for the same cost Fluance RT82 $299 gives you a $150 increase in performance and component value since it has 50% lower wow and flutter and includes an upgrade from the $30 conical tip AT3600 cartridge to the $80 elliptical tip Ortofon OM10 cartridge that is just as good as the newer version 2M Red. The RT82 would just require a $16 or better phono stage preamp or the Sony STR-DH190 $169 has a built in phono stage preamp instead of the Yamaha receiver without.

You need 4 things. Turntable, phono stage preamp, speaker amplification, speakers. Some of those functions can be combined. Some turntables have a built in phono stage preamp. Some receivers or integrated amps have a built in phono stage preamp. Stereo or AV receivers or integrated or compact or mini amps power passive speakers. Powered speakers have a built in speaker amp and a few have a built in phono stage preamp.

Setup guide: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers

I recommend turntable > receiver or integrated amp > passive speakers. Then you can later replace or upgrade one part at a time.

Ideally spend just as much on the amplification and speakers as on the turntable or buy used for half the cost.

For the best value what is a Craigslist or nearby zip code to search for used options?

A new option for a $300 turntable is Yamaha R-S202 ~~$149~~ $119 with Bluetooth plus 5″ Wharfedale Crystal CR 4.2 ~~$249~~ $149 or Amazon Black or Walnut and some speaker wire.

For the turntable, instead of the hollow plastic AT-LP120X, a solid MDF plinth turntable:

 • Fluance RT82 $299 has auto stop and then the new optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
 • Audio-Technica AT-LPW40WN $299 has the same speed sensor motor as the RT82, adds a basic built in phono stage preamp, but does not have auto stop.
 • Crosley C10 $291 is designed by Pro-ject, see the Pro-ject tonearm on it, and is basically an Essential III for lower cost.

Those Altos are large PA speakers for a club, auditorium or outdoors. If you must use them then the RCA to XPR input cables should work however you will need to adjust the volume on each speaker if not using a mixer or stereo preamp to control both of them at the same time.

The basic entry level Polk T15 speakers are the sound quality bottleneck along with or even before the stylus or cartridge. Upgrade the speakers first for the most increase in sound quailty or at the same time as the stylus or cartrdige.

Also you receiver and built in phono stage preamp may sound dull if it has not been serviced with a capacitor recap this century in order to sound as good as new.

The Technics is the better turntable. What is the stock cartridge and stylus on it? It already had or you put on a new stylus when you acquired it?

The Denon is basically an AT-LP3 and both have the same motor as the AT-LP60 which is not all that great. The stock cartridge is a decent enough entry level cartridge to start with, it’s not garbage. It has a good stylus upgrade option, the LP Gear CARBON FIDELITY CFN3600LE $39.

For $650, NO! The Turntablelab bundles don’t make much sense.

The AT-LPW40WN is good for $299.

The HD3 are tiny 2.75″ mid bass driver computer desktop speakers for listening while seated at your desk and are overpriced for more than the cost of the turntable! Makes no sense why they are selling what are basically pricey computer speakers with a turntable.

AT-LPW40WN $299 + Yamaha R-S202 ~~$149~~ $99.

Plus larger speakers and speaker wire:

For around $550 is a much better setup for around $100 less.

Yes, those Aiwa shelf systems are not very good and will be the sound quailty bottleneck for the turntable.

A phono stage preamp applies the RIAA EQ curve to the phono signal to bring it to standard line level. A speaker amp such as a stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp powers passive speakers and a good number of them have a built in phono stage preamp.

Yep the Edifiers are as much of a sound quailty bottleneck for the LP120 as the stylus and built in phono stage preamp.

If you do upgrade your speakers, amp and stylus, then the next step is AT-LP120 Preamp Removal Guide to use a better phono stage preamp outside of the turntable. Not needed for the new X version LP120X that it was fixed on.

The basic Technics SB-A35 may have more impact than the Edifiers however the highs and mids may not be any better.

Pass on a $100 digital mini amp for an analog vinyl setup. I don’t know why some at budgetaudiphile push digital mini amps for analog and full size turntable setups. You can often get a better used stereo receiver for less cost.

What is a next door town or zip to search for used options?

Is there also a TV in the room as part of the setup?

New stereo receivers:

 • Sony STR-DH190 $149 with a built in phono stage preamp with adjustable gain and Bluetooth.
 • Pioneer SX-10AE $149 adds a subwoofer output (you can use speaker wire connection to a subwoofer with the Sony). The Pioneer does not have a built in phono stage preamp so use the one in a turntable or an external one.

What are your current speakers? If your speakers are even more basic and entry level than the Edifier speakers then upgrade the speakers first for the most upgrade in sound quality to an analog stereo receiver or integrated amp and better passive speakers then the digitally controlled amp Edifiers that are angled back for desktop use. Then upgrade the turntable later since if you are going to spend $300 on a turntable upgrade you ideally want to spend just as much or more on the speakers to get the most out of the turntable upgrade or buy used components that originally cost more than the turntable. You already have small 4″ mid bass driver digital amp powered speakers. If you are going to upgrade then upgrade to some much better and larger passive speakers and an analog stereo receiver or integrated amp with a built in phono stage preamp starting around $300.

Analog receiver:

 • Sony STR-DH190 $149 with Bluetooth and a built in phono stage preamp with adjustable gain.
 • Or if there is also a TV in the room, an AV Receiver $399+ with 4K HDMI switching and you can optionally add more speakers for movie and TV surround sound.

You also need speaker amplification for the passive speakers.

Sony STR-DH190 $149 with Bluetooth has a built in phono stage preamp with adjustable gain so you don’t need a separate phono stage preamp.

The Neumi speakers seem to be decent and a good value to start with. Wharfedale Crystal CR 4.2 ~~$249~~ $149 speakers or at Amazon Black or Walnut may be a bit better.

Or what is a next door town or zip to search for used speaker and receiver options?

If you get a receiver without a phono input built in phono stage preamp then the U-Turn Audio Pluto 2 $99 new improved version should be better than the Fluance PA10. Or the Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 has adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, may be just as good as the Fluance PA10 for half the price.

The RT82 is a worth while step up over the LP120X.

What are you currently powering the T15 with? Upgrade the speakers first for the most increase in sound quailty since the T15 are more of a sound quailty bottleneck than the new X version LP60X turntable is.

>Once again thanks for all the great info, I hope you don’t mind me messaging you some noob questions. I am planning on purchasing the RT82, will the sony STRDH work as the pre amp as well as the receiver? Should I look into getting a better stylus, record mat and anti vibration feet for the RT82? Should I skip the Sony STRDH and just go for a bigger receiver if I want to add my laptop (for gaming and TV)? Can you point me in the direction of where to find info on matching speakers with my receiver / turntable? Thanks again

The RT82 is all set to go, it already has a good cartridge and styles and already has a good rubber mat and already has good anti vibration feet.

If you want more speakers for movie TV and gaming surround sound then get a 5 or more channel AV receiver.

How to Match Speakers and Amps

If you want to start with the turntable then the 4211-DE $21 stylus is sufficient for your current setup.

Your current sound quality bottleneck is the speakers so upgrade those first. Then the receiver or an integrated amp and many that are better than entry level have a good built in phono stage preamp.

Better than entry level stereo receiver or integrated amp: Cambridge Audio AXR85, Emotiva TA-100, Yamaha A-S301, Yamaha A-S501 all with a good built in phono stage premap.

What headphones are you driving that need a $250+ headphone amp? A $100 one may be sufficient.

If you like the Klipsch sound go larger than the 4″ R-41 for anything larger than a small room:

Or other brands:

 • 5″ Wharfedale Crystal CR 4.2 ~~$249~~ $149 or Amazon $139.
 • 5.25″ KEF Q150 ~~$599~~ $299.
 • 6.5″ Ascend CBM-170SE $298 + shipping. Neutral sound with a linear frequency response and a great mid range that many speakers in the price range lack. Internet direct, no middlemen or resellers so compare to $600 retail speakers. My speakers of choice.
