Start with whatever the equivalent of craigslist is where you live. I was able to pick up all the equipment I’d ever need for the first several years for free because someone didn’t want it taking up a spare room (and I had a spare room). Then when I needed more weight, that was $80 and I’m now set for a decade or more at the rate I’m progressing.

If you don’t happen to get lucky like that and have a limited budget, start with a pair of dumbbells and some plates for them. Don’t get non-plate-based dumbbells or kettlebells if you’re on a budget, they might be cheaper right now but you’ll be replacing them every few weeks.

If you have no money at all, a backpack filled with empty bottles is honestly a fantastic place to start: you can gradually fill those bottles with more and more water as your strength improves, giving an extreme level of control over exactly how much weight you’re using.

Oh and if your budget is unlimited? Adding a bench kind of like this and a bar (doesn’t have to be Olympic, in fact you might be better off avoiding those for a number of reasons) to your dumbbells and plates will add a lot of convenience. If you have the space.
