I have the same problem. I use baby changing blankets and these waterproof mattress covers from Amazon.

I actually have two on for the rare occasion when I squirt so much that the top one can’t handle it.

On all our beds we have mattress covers. They’re cloth on top but a thin plastic liner on the bottom. They can be bleached and tumble dry no heat. Highly recommend.

I’ve been using this one for years and love it. It’s super affordable, less than half the price of the others I’m seeing here, and feels and sounds like fabric, not plastic. It hasn’t been put completely through the wringer here since I don’t have kids, but it holds up to all the normal adult spills, drips, and drabbles really well
