The first step is you have to go to bed earlier. If you want to wake up 30 min earlier then you have to go to bed 30 min earlier. You still need sleep, so you have to make sure you have time to get it.

Recently I started using an alarm light that simulates sunrise and it has been making waking up even easier. I’ve been a morning person for ages, but this is a much more pleasant way to get up. It starts slowly increasing the light level in the room before I need to wake up and then starts playing some gentle noises (I use the ocean waves with birds one). There are lots of different types but I’ve got this one from amazon.

Once I’m up out of bed, I have a very established routine to get my morning rolling so I don’t have to think about things too much. I get up and go to the bathroom and then I take my dog on a walk around the block. During that time, I’m checking my phone, start listening to a podcast to start the day, and it gets me moving. Once home, I go through my morning chores (feed/water the dog, brush my teeth, make my morning drink (winter it’s hot coffee, recently it’s iced coffee), get dressed in my gym clothes), then I head off to the gym. Right now I’m working from home, so I have to pack less stuff. In the before times I’d also pack up my bag with breakfast, lunch, and work clothes. To simplify that, I tended to eat similar things everyday so it was very easy to grab all my stuff.

This past spring I invested in a sunrise alarm light thingie for the mornings and it has helped me wake up soooo much more easily. I’ve always been a morning person (I tend to get up around 5am), but this has made it even easier. You might want to look into getting one for those gloomy/cloudy days or for when winter rolls around. Here’s the amazon link to the one I got, but there are several types out there which would be equally good.

When COVID hit and I didn’t “need” to be in the office anymore I lost the motivation to get up early just “for myself”. A few things that helped me recently that may have already been said:

  1. Natural light alarm clock, I got this one and really like it (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081CHLF46?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share)

  2. Putting your phone across the room. I never thought this one would actually work but for me I realized once I’m actually out of bed I’m very unlikely to just get back in.

  3. Automate your routine as much as you can by stacking habits. I.e. “first I will drink water, then I will get out of bed, then I will turn off my alarm clock”. Automate your morning for as long as you can so you don’t have to use as much willpower/brainpower to do stuff. Write your routine down and over time it’ll become habit.

  4. Still make some time for yourself! I still go on my phone, I just limit it to while I’m eating breakfast at the table instead of in bed. Also I meditate right before I start working if that’s your thing. Try to fit in a little time for yourself before being “productive”. I know a lot of people talk about playing video games or going for a workout in the morning but personally I start too early to make time to feasibly do that.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but get yourself a sunrise alarm clock. Gently waking to an artificial sunrise completely eliminated the nauseating, aggressively horrible, complete inability to wake up mornings.

I have one like this

Completely changed my life. Just set it to slowly start turning on 30 min before you actually have to get up. I do a snoozable alarm on my phone at 6:15, the fake sunrise starts at 6:30, and my first “real” alarm hits at 7 which is when I need to start to get up. By the time that alarm hits my body has started to slowly lift itself out of slumber and I am good to go.

This is the sunrise alarm clock that I use. There are several similar types though, so find one from somewhere that works for you. I’ve had this one for a year and it’s still working well.

I have a similar issue and found one of the sunrise alarm clock actually has really helped me. I got this one from Amazon but there are lots of other similar styles that should also work. I was doubtful about it before I got it, but this winter I’ve noticed a drastic difference in how easily I wake up since I’ve started using it.

Yes! I bought this one specifically (the Walmart reviews don’t seem very promising): Wake Up Light Sunrise Alarm Clock for Kids, Heavy Sleepers, Bedroom, with Sunrise Simulation, Sleep Aid, Dual Alarms, FM Radio, Snooze, Nightlight, Daylight, 7 Colors, 7 Natural Sounds, Ideal for Gift https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081CHLF46/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_64W89F5FC81W2GSZ95Y9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

You can also set it to just be the light to use for light therapy in general.

I second the sunrise alarm, I have this one: Sunrise Alarm and while it hasn’t fixed it 100% I do wake up easier. And in a better mood (now getting out of bed is the challenging part). I have it set to play birds chirping too (instead of music or an angry alarm sound), which helps. Its also a white noise machine which has helped me get to sleep too.

This time of the year, when you wake up in the after noon and its already dark, having a sunrise light to wake up to works wonders, vs an alarm

Me im home 8am, bed 12pm, wake 8pm

I tend to become a depressed hermit in winters, so I know this struggle. A few things that have helped:

  • Make sure to be taking those vit D supplements. I have a bottle at home and at bottle at my desk at work so in case I forget it at home, I have some readily available to take at work.

  • Get a sunrise alarm clock. I got this one from Amazon but there are many styles out there that work similarly. It has made quite a difference in helping me wake up in the mornings and be able to get out of bed and be more alert in the morning.

  • Go on a walk midday when it’s bright out. I’m lucky that I can usually get out for 40-60 min for walks, but even doing 15-20min will help. It helps with getting that good bright sunlight into your eyes, but also gives you the bonus of being out in nature (even if that’s just the trees in your city) which is one of those things highly linked with feeling better.

Amazon has these ones and they’ll go on sale occasionally. I got them for my deep sleeping teenager and while it’s not foolproof and he will get up sometimes and turn it off, it has helped immensely. And it’s loud as hell too, with annoying sounds and even bird noises.

If you’re trying to do ‘light exposure’ in the mornings, this is the best alarm clock I’ve ever bought, wakes you up with natural light & it was easier for me to wake up exhausted

It’s this one.

I couldn’t recommend it more highly, it does exactly what I need it to, plus it’s super easy to program. It’s also really easy to use while sleepy and just reaching over to it. Everything is accessible. Once you set it up how you like it, it’s one button to enable what you need at night.

Not who you asked, but this is the one I ordered off Amazon earlier this year and I’ve also found it very helpful in waking up. It started to slowly get brighter and then after a while you can pick which sound turns on. I’m a morning person anyways, but when I’m having to get up before the sun (usually am up around 5am), this light has helped make that easier and more pleasant.

I got this one from Amazon. I like that you can turn the numbers for time down dim or completely off. It also has a variety of “soothing” sounds that can turn on when it turns on. I’ve been doing the ocean waves but the seagulls included were a bit jarring at first. I’d worry the bubbling brook one would make you pee the bed. You can also do it with no sound. I have it sitting on top of my dogs crate so that it’s facing me and I’ve noticed I am waking up much more smoothly.

I have this for morning wakeup: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081CHLF46/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Not only can you set it from 10 min to 2 hours to simulate a sunset to start sleeping, but you set the time for DAWN. The ‘alarm’ portion of this clock nearly never gets a chance to go off because I’m just awake by that time.

I’m going to have to try scheduling the thermostat . . . . . That sounds interesting.

I slept 11 hours last night. It’s so dark and cold I can’t seem to get out of bed. Been thinking about buying one of those sunrise alarm clocks (like this https://www.amazon.com/Sunrise-Sleepers-Simulation-Nightlight-Daylight/dp/B081CHLF46)

Avoid your phone and bright lights before you go to bed. Blacking out your room might help along with buying one of these https://www.amazon.com/Sunrise-Sleepers-Simulation-Nightlight-Daylight/dp/B081CHLF46?pd_rd_w=xVURn&pf_rd_p=5bc65336-a8b0-4888-9e70-4d4ce2f6bd59&pf_rd_r=65HWHJFGYQAVSG14GWYW&pd_rd_r=47e9d7ca-3396-4426-8699-149e71b1355a&pd_rd_wg=egP1p&pd_rd_i=B081CHLF46&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_d_rp_1_i

Here is a sleep stack that I use but it’s not cheap compared to melatonin:

Magnesium threonate

Apigenin

Zinc Citrate

Prazosin (prescribed)

CBD 24 mg

Also, I highly recommend this podcast

Lastly, “Why We Sleep” by Dr. Walker is a great read!!! Highly recommend

NTA.

I’d suggest getting a timer for the room lights, or a vibrating alarm, or something that prevents him from snoozing. Snoozing an alarm does nothing to increase or improve wakefulness, and it is actively detrimental to morning routines. It needs to stop, and a normal audio alarm is not working.

Try these. Yes, they are designed for children, because this is childlike behavior.

I started using an alarm that increases brightness and sound, it’s helped a lot. I think it was here: https://www.amazon.com/Sunrise-Sleepers-Simulation-Nightlight-Daylight/dp/B081CHLF46/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=wake+up+light&qid=1614064836&sr=8-3

Also not sure if you’ve tried this already, but going to bed earlier helps me with energy the next day.

Oh, and they also make ones that have built-in alarm clocks that wake you up by gradually increases the light level, for example, https://www.amazon.com/Sunrise-Sleepers-Simulation-Nightlight-Daylight/dp/B081CHLF46/. I can’t vouch for this one specifically so I would do some research before making a purchase. This one is on the inexpensive side from what I’ve seen, but it could be that splurging on a $200 would get you the features you need. And if you have a diagnosis of SAD (I would talk to your doctor) it’s possible that insurance would cover one. I know the Cornell Drugstore in the health center carries a particular brand of daylight lamp, but I don’t know the details.

Never used one myself, but I hear really good things about this type of dimmer phased brightening thing (there are probably better brands, this is just the rough idea of what I am talking about).

Here’s the Philips one, which may be better, but for the price, I don’t think it’s worth.

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Simulation-Headspace-Subscription-HF3520/dp/B0093162RM

I’d try out the first one I linked, and if it doesn’t work for you, easy return with Amazon. Cheers!

Mine was only $40! It works great 🙂 it also does the “shifts into rainbow colors” thing 🙂

Linky!

Hope that works, not sure about the mobile thing!
