You don’t need to spend that much for a good tablet. I personally use a Vistablet. This one is $80 for a 12 inch tablet as opposed to $700.
It’s not as feature full as say a Wacom but it’s gotten the job done for me though my own BFA program.
Also, as far as preparing for the classes goes:
Be at least a little bit familiar with Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Just using the programs, playing around, and looking up tutorials on things really helps you learn the software. And the better you know the software, the quicker you can move on to learning design instead of struggling with the programs.
Also be ready to draw. You might not be forced to sketch but having a sketchbook and pencil to do thumbnails is a good thing to do before you hop onto the computer.
