Heard really great things about the Vanicream Gentle Cleanser. I suffer from pretty sensitive skin on my hands (contact dermatitis and dyshidrotic eczema), and Vanicream’s products have been pretty pivotal for healing and moisturizing them. I give the brand a +1

SPF is always good when you’re getting any kind of sun exposure in general, just because it isn’t bright doesn’t meant there aren’t UV days. BUT in your case it probably isn’t the most urgent thing 🙂

the Vanicream looks like this: https://www.amazon.in/Vanicream-Gentle-Facial-Cleanser-Pump/dp/B00QY1XZ4W

It used to be my go to but I switch to Vanicream cleanser. Vanicream was recommended by an allergist as it has very few ingredients.

Vancircream makes a face wash that’s ultra gentle and has a nice pearlescent consistency. Great for sensitive skin /on tretinoin

Vanicream is CF & vegan, super gentle. I love their cleanser, lite lotion and regular lotion for those super dry days. Similar price point to cetaphil. I highly recommend!

Hmm, that stuff looks pretty good. I’ll give it a try. ~~My only concern is that it has white petroleum. If I find mineral oil irritating, I wonder if I’ll have the same reaction to petroleum. But it’s worth a shot!~~

I just realized you’re probably referring to this product. This looks like it is an emulsifying cleanser, correct? Does it wash off clean or leave a residue? Any dryness if you overuse it? Have you used it for make-up removal before?

That’s weird, I currently use this:

http://www.amazon.com/Vanicream-Gentle-Facial-Cleanser-Pump/dp/B00QY1XZ4W

…and it looks like it’s made by the same company? Just at a glance it seems the ingredients are different, I wonder what the differences mean though.

Copying from my previous comment from earlier in the thread:

Face lotion alone is NOT providing nearly enough SPF coverage. Come over to r/skincareaddiction! 🙂 There are many sunscreens out there that feel like lotion but are highly protective. I personally use an Asian brand that is SPF 50 and protects against both UVA and UVB rays, something most standard sunscreens don’t do. It’s only $12 on Amazon and lasts me a couple months. After it dries, I can’t even tell I’m wearing sunscreen.

My typical morning routine for my face is:

1) Cleanser (then wash it off)

2) Toner

3) Moisturizer

4) Sunscreen

I also add sunscreen to any exposed skin on the rest of my body. This sunscreen is cheap enough that I feel fine using it for my full body.

I repeat this whole process at night (excluding the sunscreen). I also add Vitamin C serum after the toner, which also helps with anti-aging (promotes collagen growth).

The whole thing takes less than 5 minutes, plus a couple minutes between each stage to let it dry. Wrinkles are SO hard to reverse… the best solution is prevention while you’re still young! Plus, as someone whose parents have both gone through cancer, skin cancer is not something I take lightly.

EDIT: I’ve had many requests for my exact products so I’m adding them here. Everyone’s skin is a little different, so I would definitely advise doing your own research to find what works best for you. For reference, I have clear (little-to-no acne) skin, not too dry or oily.

For each product, make sure you do a patch test to ensure you don’t have a bad reaction. They’re all pretty gentle so you should be okay, but always good to be safe.

Cleanser: Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser

Toner: KLAIRS Supple Preparation Facial Toner

Moisturizer: Trader Joe’s Nourish Oil-Free Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer (this is cheaper in store)

Sunscreen: Skin Aqua Super Moisture Gel pump (SPF50 + PA ++++) (takes like a month to deliver so I usually buy multiple at a time)

Vitamin C serum: Dr. Brenner Vit C parent (small bottle but a little goes a long way)

Important note: I stopped using towels two years ago, they are too harsh on the skin and full of bacteria.

Age: 20

Routine:

AM-

Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser for sensitive Skin with Pump Dispenser, 8 Ounce

I follow this with Hada Labo Tokyo Skin Plumping Gel Cream 1.76 FL OZ – with Super Hyaluronic Acid & Collagen – 24 Hour Moisture & Visible Line Plumping fragrance & paraben free non-comedogenic ON WET SKIN, I DO NOT DRY IT.

I follow the gel with CeraVe Moisturizing Cream | 19 Ounce | Daily Face and Body Moisturizer for Dry Skin STILL ON THE WET SKIN

I follow the moisturizer with Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Facial Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 70, Non-Comedogenic, Oil-free & PABA-Free Weightless Sun Protection, 1.4 fl. oz

PM –

Same as AM but I replace the sunscreen with Tretinoin Micro .1% on damp skin.

I also don’t use any dairy products besides cheese and my diet can sometimes be complete shit honestly, but I do keto every now and then with intermittent fasting.

I think a lot of the users here are girls and honestly I think makeup is horrible for your skin, but if you need it, then just be careful with what you buy.

But yeah, I would say the most important part of my routine is the Tretinoin. My family also has good skin in general (my dad uses a super greasy hand soap bar on his face and has flawless skin) so maybe that contributed a little too?

Anyways, I’ve done a lot of research on bacterial acne, fungal acne, comedonal acne, and sun damage so feel free to ask questions if you have any, I’ll get back to you.

My skin is also extremely dry for anyone wondering. It flakes sometimes from the dryness. It has improved greatly though, it doesn’t flake much anymore.

EDIT: I forgot to add that I use a dermaroller as well. It has 5mm needles to promote beard growth and collagen. But a lot of people say to lay off the dermarollers.

EDIT 2: I also don’t drink or smoke. Never have and never will :-).

Soap is too basic (as in the pH is too high not that it’s a simple product) for facial skin and really stripping. While you use tret it’s really important to keep your moisture barrier intact so that acne will heal quickly and won’t scar as much. Always prioritize lessening irritation and keeping your skin hydrated while using tret. 0.025 is pretty gentle, but do not underestimate potential irritation. You only need a pea-sized amount and here’s a video on how to apply it. You can either apply it after cleansing or after moisturizer depending on how resilient your skin is. Never ever apply it to wet skin it will cause you to flake and peel which means you also have to wait for moisturizer to dry and sink into your skin if you plan on buffering tret. Since the percentage you were given is the lowest available I think you can probably start off with using it every other day (feel free to use it less frequently 2x or 3x a week if it’s too much for you) and on the days that you aren’t using tret just focus on moisturizing a lot (even if you’re oily).

Products (with links ;D):

Cleansers:

Moisturizer: (I’m oily too and it’s summer so I have a couple recommendations)

Emergency Items (for when your skin is peeling/super irritated):

  • La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 – Baume? More like the bomb it’s a holy grail for damaged skin. This is fantastic stuff, but I recommend buying it from CVS or Walgreens when there’s a sale.
  • Aquaphor Healing Ointment – You can use this to lock in your moisturizer on your days off tret or a barrier around your lips and eyes to prevent irritation. You can just buy this at the drugstore too since three tubes is kinda a lot.
  • CeraVe Healing Ointment – Cheaper at drugstores like some of the other products.
  • FAB Ultra Repair Cream – Expensive but some people here swear by it.

Important notes: You need to wear sunscreen religiously if you go outside (I just stay indoors lol) because tretinoin does cause photosensitivity. I can’t give you recommendations because everyone likes their sunscreen a little bit different (texture, chemical vs physical, tinted or not). You cannot get waxed while using tret because your skin will get ripped off. Shaving is okay and so is threading. If your acne doesn’t get better but you can use tret every day without any problems then don’t be afraid to ask for a higher percentage and then ease yourself into using that more frequently. Patience is key, it might take a while to see results and you might purge but stay vigilant and consistent. Tretinoin is a marathon not a race.

It may have also been due to SLS or SLES! I recently switched over to Vanicream cleanser, $7 and 10% sulfur ointment, $8 as recommended as my curology provider and a lot of the irritation and texture is slowly beginning to fade from my face. Also, I read that snail mucin is excellent for hydration; Cosrx snail 96 mucin is only 15 bucks on Amazon. No fragrance or SLS for me anymore…

I recommend the Stirling starter set. I suggest one of the three soaps be unscented and the brush be synthetic

I also recommend vanicream Face wash
Washing your face before shaving and after shaving can help cut down irritation for people like me with medical skin conditions.

Hey guys, I’ve been lurking here for a couple weeks and wanna fix some of my skin troubles. I think I have a general idea of where I’m going but I’d like some advice as to if I’m going about this the right way. So, first of all, my skin seems to be dry to normal, and I’ve got lots of closed comedones, some hyperpigmentation, and occasional acne flareups to deal with. These happen mostly on my temples and around my jaw. Here are some pics of my skin. A little gross but hopefully not the worst you’ve ever seen: https://imgur.com/a/basnQnE

Now, I’ve also amassed a good amount of products over time and just recently after reading through this sub, here they all are in pics and in list form:

Nonexhaustive Pics: https://imgur.com/a/cHAw4vy

(Exhaustively) Listed out:

Cleansers

Exfoliants

Moisturizers

Sunscreen

Misc/I didn’t know how to categorize these

I’m sorry about how long this list is but I didn’t want to leave any information out. This is pretty much every tool I have in my arsenal, topical treatment wise.

So, as to what I’m doing currently, I’ve been putting on the stridex pads for the past week or so to my temples and forehead and pretty much all over my face (in the morning). The pads have made my skin a little dryer and seem to have brought out the comedones a little more, but it seems like it’s doing what it’s supposed to. Just now I put on the Skin-A Tret on my temples, so my routine effectively looks like this:

AM: Stridex

PM: Skin-A (isn’t it practically the same thing as Retin-A?)

Thanks for reading this mess, I’d really appreciate just knowing where to go from here. Which products I should use, when and how, and in what combination. I’d like to get rid of all those closed comedones on my temples and hopefully clear up as much scarring and hyperpigmentation as I can along the way. I’m hoping that any active acne (I have a bit around my jaw that aren’t too terrible, not pictures) will fall in line when I get into a good groove with my skincare routine.

Edit: Forgot to include my location; I’m in VA, so no curology for me. Maybe Yoderm? I don’t know much about them though.

Hey I have dry sensitive skin with redness so hopefully this helps you out a bit. For skincare I use the vanicream gentle facial cleanser to wash my face with both day and night. It does not strip your skin and leave it feeling tight. To tone I use paula’s choice calming toner it is bit pricey but it’s been the only toner that does not burn or increase the redness on my face. It’s also helped a lot with the dry flaky patches around my t-zone especially since this is in my morning and night routine. My moisturizer is vanicream daily facial moisturizer it has hyaluronic acid and ceramides plus it wears nicely under my makeup. I also use this both day and night. I don’t use eye cream but I use the caffeine serum under my eyes and I apply this before moisturizer.
For makeup the best primer I have used is the ordinary silicone primer the price itself is what got me but using it under my foundation was amazing. It’s hydrating and smoothes your skin. It definitely eased the worry of my foundation clinging to the dry patches on my face. You do need to let it melt on the skin for a sec and sit then go in with foundation and concealer. It wears very nicely throughout the day and I only do very minor touch ups to my makeup.

Hear is my two cents. I have eczema and another skin condition. I have very dry sensitive skin with very coarse thick beard. I am only six months into my de shaving I am not an expert and still refining my skills and slowly changing equipment .
First make sure you are washing your face twice a day and moisturizing morning and evening. If your shaving wash and moisturize the opposite end of day from shave.
Hear is my shave routine and products i currently use and why. Your millage may vary. I will give you links to products I do not sell any products and am not paid
by anyone to promote them. This is my current routine. You can find these products in many places im using amazon primarily if items are available because they are easy to find instead of website hopping even though amazon is often not the cheapest.

1 take shower wash face with vanicream face-wash

https://www.amazon.com/Vanicream-Gentle-Cleanser-sensitive-Dispenser/dp/B00QY1XZ4W/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=vanicream+facial+cleanser&qid=1599956571&sprefix=vanicr&sr=8-3

  1. Before i dry off i grab a jar of prep and spend a min or two massaging into face. I am allergic to proraso pre shaves and oil and gel pre shave causes me rashes and pimples.
    https://www.amazon.com/PREP-Derma-Protective-Paraben-Italian/dp/B01GS6WO62/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=prep+derma+protective+cream&qid=1599956769&sprefix=prep+derma+&sr=8-3

  2. dry off skip the face

  3. I use a synthetic brush. I get brush burn from even silvertip badger brushes. If you don’t own a synthetic buy one in my opinion. I lather up using soap next. The best soap i have used so far is Wholly kaw bare . siero . It is unscented if your having shave problems start unscented to make sure fragrance is not the problem. When i started i bought proraso sensitive skin line and found out that i was very allergic to those products. That could be part of problem your having.
    https://whollykaw.com/product/shaving-soap-bare-siero/

  4. I am going to change some of my hardware soon i will explain at the end keep reading. I use a wcs closed comb razor with a feather blade slightly modified to increase blade gap for more aggression. I do a three pass shave with the grain , across the grain and agents the grain. I am not actually recommending this razor its just the one i have now. The de 89 is to mild under normal conditions for me to get a good shave i own one. I have to use a feather blade to get less irritation and not a great shave.
You can modify your de89 to be more aggressive to see if you like a more aggressive razor hear is a link on how to modify aggression. This is a almost free way to adjust your razor you currently have. I never modified my de 89 but probably will give it a try tomorrow.
    https://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/modifying-safety-razor-aggressiveness-efficiency-with-blade-shims-reverse-shims-and-tape-strips.532243/

If your technique is not down do not venture hear yet. I am going to purchase a slant razor and a Se razor like the hawk to hopefully improve my shaves further.

  1. wash my face with vanicream get all that junk out of your skin after shave .

    1. I like the alum stick after every shave even if i did not get cut leave on for a min or two.

https://www.amazon.com/Omega-Potassium-Shaving-Facial-Treatment/dp/B00I1Q8Q8I/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=alum+stick&qid=1599958371&sprefix=alum+stick&sr=8-3

8 . Splash my face with a little water wet my hands and apply a thin layer of Vasoline brand petroleum jelly. Skip the aftershave the petroleum jelly will help heal your skin. Just keep it away from the caller of your shirt it will ruin it.

Boom done.

Good luck hope my trials and tribulations in the de shave world will help save you some cash and hone in your skills.

I recommend only changing one thing at a time to cut down on variables.
The first thing i recommend changing is washing the face and moisturizing twice a day. Including before shaving and after so on shave days actually three times.
I do not recommend shaving every day until you can shave irritation free and some people can not shave everyday.
I also recommend a fixed month. This is a month that is all about learning better habits and techniques. You select all items you are going to shave with and keep them the same for one month so the only variable changing is skill.

Youtube is your friend check out a bunch of shave videos for learning this has helped me a ton even just watching someone else do it.

I think you do need to work on technique and you probably need a more aggressive razor . However i would use de89 and modify its aggression until you get technique down. You also may have to only shave with the grain if problems persist.

Life is a growth process you will get there just be patient. Every failure is a chance to learn and become more intelligent. Skill and smarts are cultivated by those who get back up after being knocked down and analyze where things went sideways. So your already smarter and more skilled because you asked a question. Good luck hope this helped .

Yeah, you shouldn’t pay more than $9 for an 8oz bottle of it, which should last you three to four months.

Target, Walgreens, Amazon, even LovelySkin has it and they do free shipping if you’re in the US.

Make sure to take into account product size too. You may find a cheaper cleanser but if it’s much smaller it might end up being more expensive per ounce.

Also…

>I’ve heard that cleansers can cause aging so I want to be careful.

Not sure where you heard this, but it’s not true.

Honestly. I really urge you not to use hydrocortisone. I was prescribed it when I first broke out too, and it thins your skin barrier and you can never really heal from that.

Try other methods. Mine is completely under control by washing every night with Vanicream and then moisturizing with Cerave PM

I still get a bit of redness now and then, but its very manageable. Sunscreen is key

Hi!! My bf also started getting into skincare since I influenced him to do so. He wanted to have healthy skin and “not look like a baseball gloves” (his words). So, since he tends to have redness in the winter, after hours of “researching” AKA watching skincare guru like Hyram and James Welsh, he bought these:

  1. Vanicream Gentle Cleanser
  2. Snail Mucin COSRX
  3. CeraVe Facial Moisturizer
  4. Neutrogena Hydro boost sunscreen

He also uses cleansing balm to double cleanse so he could get rid of the sunscreen. It lasts a LONGGG TIME.
5. Neutrogena Cleansing Balm

I stopped taking my birth control and it caused horrible acne. I am on the mends now but it has been four months of improvement and I’m looking to continue. I think my acne is somewhat under control now and my new issue is the scarring. My dermatologist said I may start on Accutane next month.

  • The issue(s): Hormonal acne and mostly scarring now
  • Skin type: I’m not sure. I’ve been reading over guides for years and still can’t figure it out.
  • Current routine: Medication: Yaz birth control started again four months ago, Tretinoin Cream, USP 0.05% used every other night (pea sized over entire face), Doxycycline Hyclate 100mg (one pill) each night, spironolactone 25mg (four pills, 100mg total) taken each morning and each night (eight pills total, 200mg total). Morning: Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser and CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30. Night: Prescription Benzoyl Peroxide Topical Wash 10% and CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion.
  • How long you have been using your current routine, or product in question: Four months
  • Anything new you’ve introduced or started doing that might change the condition of your skin: N/A. I may potentially start on Accutane next month.
  • Your location: USA- Columbia, South Carolina

I wake up with a flakey face as well, almost looks like yours. This is anecdotal, but it works for me. When I wake up, put on a small layer of Noxema and leave it on as a mask for 5 minutes or 10, then wash it off with a mild cleanser. I was surprised his didn’t sting my face because it can be a little intense, but I like the sensation of it.

I like rotating with vanicream or cerave cleansers, but my favorite one is Hada Labo cleanser , they don’t sting my face).

I then apply my moisturizer, usually vanicream, and follow it up with aquaphor to seal it in, otherwise my face goes back to being tight and dry. The Noxzema seems to soften the flakes and makes cleansing easier. Again, this is totally ANECTODAL, but perhaps it may help you deal with morning flakey face as well. I’m sure others will chime in with better routines, good luck.

Okay thanks for advice. I just now looked at the different products you recommened. But i was wondering, when is it TOO much for my skin to handle? Adapalene should already harsh for my skin as im aware, and i don’t wanna use too many products that could damage my skin barrier.

But from the products you recommened, i found some that i could order from my country.

First the Azelaic acid. I found two versions. One cheap called “Azelaic acid Suspension 10%” from the ordinary. https://www.matas.dk/the-ordinary-azelaic-acid-suspension-10-50-ml

And the other one “Paula’s Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster – 30 Ml” https://udenparfume.dk/products/paulas-choice-azelaic-acid-booster

The first one is much cheaper than the paulas choice one. But im willing to pay more if the Paula’s choice is better? I don’t know anything about Azelaic acid haha. Also how often do you apply azelaic acid? And it wouldn’t be too harsh on my skin when im using adapalene aswell?

Next one is the moisturizing lotion. I found this “CeraVe Facial moisturizing” from https://lyko.com/da/cerave/cerave-facial-moisturizing-lotion-pm-?gclid=CjwKCAjwoZWHBhBgEiwAiMN66UjShZVyDjtuus5G05L5dQ_rPEP5_aB5UhD-NKMXlfqoCSj_USm0cxoCFvAQAvD_BwEThough i heard some people say cereva products make them break out? But i also heard people liking cerava products. Do you have any experience with the product?

For the cleanser im kinda confused on what to use. But i found the vanicream one on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Vanicream-Gentle-Cleanser-sensitive-Dispenser/dp/B00QY1XZ4W . Should i just stick to simple cleanser like that? You mentioned salicylic acid to use with the vanicream. Again im unsure if that would be too harsh, when im already using adapalene?

Lastly to the part where i feel my skin is “ghostly” You mentioned a tinted suncreen. What is there in a tinted sunscreen that makes you less pale looking/ghostly looking? I was wondering if there is a moisturizer, that have added ingrediens, to give me this more radiant and glowy look. Or maybe there is a standalone product, that is not a self-tan that could give this less ghostly look? 🙂

Unfortunately, a lot of the treatments for SD do cause sensitivity to sun and make you more prone to sunburn or worse.

First, I want to say I am so sorry this is happening. There are already a lot of good suggestions, just want to add my 2 cents.

In the AM, do not use any cleanser and just wash with water. The next two things you need are a moisturizer and sunscreen. Upon learning more, I found many recommendations for Vanicream (lotion or cream) and I think that would be a great option to start with for you. Side note: many cerave lotions have niacinamide in them, which can be irritating to some, although the cerave moisturizing cream should not. Just watch out if you try any of their other lotions.

Sunscreen is incredibly important. Most ppl with rosacea do much better with mineral sunscreens and not chemical ones. I know I am probably going to get shit for it, but it is common for many of us to go through a bunch of sunscreens until we find the one that is not irritating, comedogenic, or causes some other problem. I honestly think just focusing on repairing your skin barrier with minimal products would help the most right now, that way if you have a reaction you will not be confused about what is causing it. BUT, if you are out in the sun a lot, I’d rethink that…

I tried sulfur soap, drying AF, I would stop using it.

PM – some form of a gentle cleanser. Most initial recs are things like cetaphil, cerave, and vanicream. Cetaphil irritated my skin and I never used a Cerave cleanser. I have not had a reaction to the Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser, and I think it is a pretty safe option for you.

If you are wearing makeup and/or sunscreen, you should double cleanse at night so that you get everything off, which means cleansing oil, micellar water, or balm first, followed by your regular cleanser. Follow that with a heavy moisturizer/cream

I use the LRP cicaplast over my moisturizer (usually at night) on areas that can be very dry or will flake. Takes a little bit to absorb, but I’ve really had good results. If that cicaplast doesn’t seem like it is working well or is irritating, there are other brands with their versions such as Avene cicalfate and Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Cream. I haven’t used these personally, and prefer the ingredient list of LRP, but some have said they do better with those.

And yes, if you live in an area with hard water, a filter that you attach to your shower head may significantly improve your skin. Example of one.

If you are worried about a new product, do a patch test to see if you react before you put it on your face (I still have nightmares about benzoyl peroxide)

Decent list of common irritants to avoid

Recent thread about ideas to prevent irritation from masks

TL,DR: Keep it simple.

AM – Wash with cool water, pat face dry (do not vigorously rub it), moisturizer (Vanicream would be my rec), sunscreen (if you have one that you know does not irritate your face)

PM – double cleanse if makeup/sunscreen worn during the day, regular cleanse otherwise, follow with heavier moisturizing cream (again, recommend vanicream), cicaplast

I hope this starts the healing process until your next derm appt!

I have oily skin and have no problems with double cleansing with a balm! I actually prefer it when I wear a full face of makeup. I really like CLINIQUE Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm, Naturopathica Manuka Honey Cleansing Balm, and Glow Recipe Papaya Sorbet Smoothing Enzyme Cleansing Balm & Makeup Remover. I then follow with Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser and it’s a great combo for me!

I have very sensitive acne prone skin and use Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gentle Cleansing Lotion and Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream for Extra Dry Skin. These can both be found in most drug stores and on Amazon and are fragrance free and non-comedogenic.

Vanicream is also a popular brand for those with sensitivities. My mom is severely allergic to a myriad of ingredients: fragrance, linalool, benzyl alcohol, propolis. She uses Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser and Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream. They are also fragrance free and formulated for people with extreme sensitivities. She hasn’t had any problems with them.

I’ve found the cheapest prices at Target, Walmart, and Amazon.

Do NOT purchase it from Walgreens or CVS – those stores almost always have higher prices for skincare products.

The Vanicream cleanser is $8.99 at both Target & Amazon. Here’s the Amazon link

The Vanicream Lite Lotion is $12.59 at both Amazon and Target

The Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream (4 oz) is $6.79 at Target

The larger moisturizing cream in the tub is usually around $12

Sometimes I see the tub of moisturizing skin cream & lite lotion as much as $16-$17 at CVS and Walgreens. That’s overpriced.

Soap can be really, really hard on your skin. Its pH is way off from what your skin barrier needs. Instead, I would recommend something simple and gentle (like Vanicream or Cerave). I wouldn’t use soap at all, but I definitely wouldn’t wash my face with soap and then use a cleanser too. That’s redundant and could be aggravating your skin further.

I too use an electric razor and sometimes still get ingrown hairs. It’s definitely better than disposable razors, but you’re not 100% in the clear.

Here are simple moisturizers I like:

  • Cerave PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion
  • Cerave Daily Moisturizing Lotion (such a good value!)
  • Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer

Sunscreens I used when I was younger, oilier and had more acne:

  • Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Absorbing Moisturizer SPF 30
  • Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 30
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin SPF 60

Do you prefer mineral sunscreens over chemical? (i.e., if you used chemical sunscreens when camping, you may want to steer toward mineral instead). If so, I’d recommend looking into the brands COTZ, EltaMD, or Australian Gold.

I would recommend a solid cleanser and chemical exfoliant, use the cleanser twice a day and the exfoliant once to twice a week(no more, could cause damage if used daily).

you use a lot of neutrogena products, and i know from experience (i have one of their salicylic acid toners) that their products are very heavily fragranced. there’s a chance that you have fragrance sensitivity, and that could be causing some of your skin irritation issues. you also have a lot of salicylic acid and denatured alcohol in your routine, both of which which can also cause irritation in high amounts.

switching to a more gentle routine might help. personally, i’d recommend:

  • a more gentle, simple cleanser like the cerave foaming cleanser, the cetaphil daily facial cleanser, or the vanicream gentle facial cleanser (this one is my personal favourite)
  • a less stripping salicylic acid toner like the heritage store blemish toner. the niacinamide in this will also help with your oiliness!
  • a serum or suspension with vitamin c or azelaic acid to help control redness. the ordinary has several relevant products like this and this. if you decide to use both, use vitamin c in the morning and azelaic acid at night, but try to avoid both at the same time.
  • i think a lot of people in this sub like the neutrogena moisturizer. if you find that it causes you irritation as well, maybe try something like this cerave moisturizer.

oil cleansing might also help in the morning. my sister oil cleanses with grapeseed oil once a day (you can buy a bottle for $5 at a grocery store) and she says it’s really helped with her oily skin.

hope this helped!

(also i tried to list drugstore/low-cost brands because i noticed that’s what a lot of your routine is currently!)

What other things is she using? I switched to Vanicream cleanser which has NO fragance, sulfates, dyes, etc. and I use a sulfur bar soap which also helped. Then after the shower I wiped my eyelids, lashes, brows and face with the Cliradex eye wipes:

Sulfur Soap

Vanicream Cleanser

Cliradex Eye Wipes

After the wipes solution dryed I put on a layer of Ivermectin and my skin cleared up in 2 days. Maybe she’s allergic to sulfates or dyes in another product?

It looks like a mix of folliculitis caused by malassezia (fungal acne) and bacterial acne. I’m not sure but all products below are safe for skin with fungal / bacterial acne.

I replied to another comment further down on this post but here’s all of the products I use:

Your shampoo could be the cause. I would definitely start using an aha and or bha product. I would use a gentle cleanser like vanicream Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser with Pump Dispenser | Fragrance, Gluten and Sulfate Free | For Sensitive Skin | 8 Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QY1XZ4W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_dq1CDbWX75558 then a good toner like MIZON Aha & Bha Daily Clean Toner, 5.07 Fluid Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LUU42NU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bo1CDb3KXNJ4A there is also a different selection on this mizon toner for a aha serum. I haven’t tried it but I am planning on buying it. I really love Cosrx products. I use the COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, 100ml https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073P6ZQ4V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Vw1CDb8W7WA27 a lot because it uses a different form of salicylic acid which great for sensitive skin, plus this is moisturizing.

Edit I would also recommend Jason dandruff shampoo Jason Dandruff Relief Treatment Shampoo 12 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FGDIAS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WB1CDbSVRBM37 it has the bha salicylic acid and sulfer which help exfolites your scalp. If you do have fungal acne or are having a reaction to your shampoo this is a good choice. I have been dealing with a dry scalp and then it turns into dandruff, after 4 uses my scalp looks so much better

I wouldn’t wash your face three times a day. I would wash your face at night and use micellar water or just water in the morning. Have you tried Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser for sensitive Skin with Pump Dispenser, 8 Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QY1XZ4W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sWjzDbN80X40H I just ordered it because its gentle for sensitive skin and safe for fungal acne (idk if I have it, but wouldn’t hurt to try some different products)

I am a huge fan of cosrx in general and use so many of their products and haven’t had any issue with any of it. I have sensitive oily acne prone skin and I use cosrx aha bha clarifying, and they use willow bark water and Betaine Salicylate in this formula which is gentle and fights acne and exfoliates without being too harsh. Plus it comes in a spray bottle so you don’t have to waste cotton balls and the less touching and rubbing your face the better, IMO.
Here is a great rundown of the ingredients and what it does and its level of irritation. https://www.skincarisma.com/products/cosrx/aha-bha-clarifying-treatment-toner-429f2b9c-88ea-4e80-8246-97c1c00befe7/ingredient_list

I personally love oil cleansing but I can’t just do oil cleansing alone. A lot of my acne disappeared except I was getting little bumps and blackheads, so I am trying to get a good balance between the two. I always use oil cleansing to take my makeup off and I always use microfiber washcloths because it grabs everything without being too rough.

Some other things you can do if you don’t already, use a free and clear or a organic laundry detergent, don’t use fabric softeners on your pillowcases, washcloths, and towels. Use wool dryer balls. I use essential oils on my dryer balls for my regular laundry but I keep some plain ones for things that will touch my face. Change or wash your pillowcase a few times a week. Use a cotton or silk (not satin) pillowcase.

Sorry this was allover the place, I suck at multi-tasking, lol.

AM

  1. Cleanse with Vanicream Gentle Cleanser
  2. Apply Corsx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid. I used to do this every other day, but I’ve built up enough moisture to do it daily.
  3. Moisturize with Hada Labo Tokyo Skin Plumping Gel Cream this is HG status for me
  4. Sunscreen La Roche Posay Anthelios. Not sure if this is FA safe, but it hasn’t given me issues. I don’t use it that often though because it pills up and doesn’t sit well under makeup. I also sometimes mix some sunscreen into my foundation to lighten it and give me a super dewy look. It’s some stuff from Thailand, don’t know what it is to be honest. Solera?

PM

  1. Remove makeup with Micellar water, otherwise skip if no makeup.
  2. Cleanse with Vanicream
  3. Alternating Days I do:
  4. Moisturize with Hada Labo Japan Gokujun Gel
  5. Finish with:
    • TO Squalene Oil on days with Stratia OR
    • Rosehip Seed Oil on days with TO Z+N

So some of these may not be entirely FA safe. I had tons of tiny pimples on my jaw and chin area for months. They were stubborn as F. I’ve done a few things that could have impacted it from:

  • altering my routine, getting rid of anything with coconut oil in it
  • going vegetarian
  • moving climates
  • simplifying my routine
  • focusing on moisture barrier

If something simple is working, I say don’t alter it. Don’t add more if you don’t need it. I thought I needed a 10 step routine. NO. I like a lot of AB products, but it’s important to avoid gimmicks and extras if it doesn’t add anything. This includes leave on masks for me. tbh.

I think one of your best bets would be to experiment with other facial cleansers to see if that helps. Here’s what I use: Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin

The issue(s) you need help with:

I have had chronic skin dryness/irritation/redness/flakiness in the areas around my nose and upper cheeks for a few months. I currently have a routine, but it is obvious to me that it isn’t optimal.

Skin type:

When I wake up, there may be a few flakes on my skin, and it is usually oily. But it is never intensely red/irritated
A few hours after cleansing and moisturizing, my skin will become a little oily, but some areas on my nose or sides of my face my dry up.

I would say I have pretty sensitive skin.

Current routine with the full names of your products:

Here are photos of my skin: https://imgur.com/a/zeLGX

The first photos are when I wake up. There is no intense visible redness, but there is some flakiness.

I currently shower in the morning with lukewarm water and cleanse with Vanicream gentle cleanser link. I then use Vanicream Lite lotion link. As you can see at this point in the pictures above, my face is noticeably red. Occasionally, I will feel stinging irritation, but most of the time it feels fine. After a half hour the redness goes down, and my face feels smoother, but not 100 percent smooth in all areas.

This routine has only functioned as a temporary measure until I find something more ideal. I use it because it is effective in treating the flakiness. If I don’t cleanse, the area around my nose especially will generate a lot of flakes, even if it isn’t particularly irritated.

I do not have a routine for the evening or night time before I go to bed. Sometimes I may just cleanse or maybe just apply some lotion, but the results in the morning aren’t drastically different.

How long you have been using your current routine, or product in question:

I tried getting suggestions from this sub in September last year about gentle products for sensitive skin. I have been using these products ever since that time, but they are not ideal.

I would really welcome any help regarding this. I have dealt with it for so long and it really affects my self-image. Please let me know what I can change or fix! Thanks
