>Currently I will only use them with my shure se846, moondrop blessing 2, grado sr60e and b&o h6 but I am planning on getting a zmf aeolus in the future.

All of those except for the ZMF are fairly easy to drive and can be driven by a dongle. There are dongles that measure highly accurate and would sound the same as the JDS Labs Atom stack or Heresy/Modi.

In fact, I have two Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongles because I use one as a DAC with my THX 789, and previously with the Atom amp, on Windows, and keep the other with my phone. It sounded the same as my $250 Topping D50S desktop DAC, so I got rid of the D50S.

And it should. The measurements indicate its noise and distortion levels are such that they should be inaudible, just like the Modi and Atom DAC+

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

So you might start with one of those and an Atom or Heresy amp, and then you have it to use with the phone. If you have an iphone, they do have it version on Amazon for it.

And then later on, you could upgrade to the matching desktop DAC and still have the Sonata HD Pro for mobile use. Or you might do like me and just get another Sonata HD Pro.

5.1 and 7.1 for gaming headphones is not true multi-channel surround. It’s just digital signal processing. If you search online, you can find software to do that.

Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 will work well with the DT 770 80 ohm, and it measures more accurate than the E10K.

>Many people have mentioned that since they’re 150 ohms they don’t need an amp but they won’t get loud without them.

That’s not necessarily true. They are fairly easy to drive and work pretty well on a PC.

I would get them first, and see what you think. Don’t feel you have to run out to buy an amp/DAC.

You do decide you want one, the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 on Amazon measures as accurate as the best $200 desktop amp/ DACs. It just doesn’t have as much power output. But plenty to drive the HD58X to moderately loud volume with crystal clear sound

The Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 measures more accurate than the K5 Pro. So accurate, that it is arguably noise and distortion free within the range of human hearing. The Sonata HD Pro doesn’t have as much headphone amp power, but the X2HR doesn’t need it.

Worth giving it a shot because Amazon has free returns, which means free return shipping if you don’t like

Try the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

It will drive the HD600 to moderately loud volume with very accurate, clear sound.

If you find you need a little more power than that, then get a JDS Labs Atom stack or Schiit Heresy and Modi 3+ for $200. Free returns at Amazon on the Tempotec, so no penalty for trying.

I use mine with this amp.

Without the amp, they’re just fine too, but the amp does help with the loudness/quality. I mainly got that one because it works with my phone and tablet as well.

I agree with the other recommendation for getting an Atom coupled with the Apple USB-C dongle. Great set up for the money that will easily drive your headphones.

Or if you only listen moderately loud, the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $60 works great with the HD58X

HD58X work okay on my Samsung S9+. But they work great with the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40. Measures extremely accurate and drives the HD58X to moderately loud volume with crystal clear sound. Works well with Windows and Android.

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

So with the HD58X, for the price of the HD6XX, you could have a pair of headphones that are easy to drive and a very good dac/amp for use with them.

And personally I prefer the hd58x over the hd6xx myself.

The Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 on Amazon is a very good dac/amp

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

Because the HD560S is 120 ohms, it is automatically detected as low impedance and goes into low gain. it can be fooled into high gain and provide a little more power by plugging in the HD 560S 3.5 mm adapter into the Sonata HD Pro. Then plug the headphone cable into that adapter after your computer or phone senses the Sonata HD Pro.

well i’ll use it in listening from here on and get a better feel but it drives with my hardest to drive headphones in high gain mode, i can’t tell it apart from a 100 dollar desktop dac by ear, and as a dac alone it works fine with my other amp. cable’s going to turn to powder in short order is the only downside so I’ll order a replacement.

it’s crazy that a 40 dollar chifi dac/amp that is the size of a flash drive does basically as well as what i spent 200-something dollars on a decade ago. especially idk how you justify a dragonfly today. this is a great portable option is my opinion rn

also the biggest complaint in the reviews (big volume steps) is not an issue on mine, there’s plenty of steps

The E10K has plenty of power for your headphones. So you don’t benefit from a more powerful headphone amp.

You can upgrade so that you get a better DAC. But that may or may not seem significant to you in terms of sound quality.

If you want to try a better measuring DAC/amp, check out the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 on Amazon

Difficult to predict. You might notice some difference. You might not. And evaluation of that difference, if it exists, is subjective. So you might find it to be less or more than someone else.

That being said, if you want to hear what the DT 700 Pro X sound like with a very accurate dac/amp, the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle is more accurate than the iFi Zen, and it would have no trouble powering the DT 700.

The DT 700 Pro X are easy to drive. They’ll even work well with a phone headphone jack.

So you can pair them with any popularly recommended amp/DAC on the subreddit. But I would try them first. You might be satisfied with the sound and decide you don’t need to buy anything else.

If you want an inexpensive dac/amp to use with them with your PC or Android phone, a Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle work very well.

If an audio source has enough power to drive a pair of headphones to your preferred listening volume, with enough headroom to render dynamic peaks without distorting, then additional power will not help.

But it is possible that your PC might have some minor amount of noise and distortion. In which case an external dac/amp can eliminate that.

The Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle is easily arguable to be noise and distortion-free within the range of human hearing. And it will drive the HD660 as to moderately loud volume with crystal clear sound. It will work with Windows 10 and Android

If you can find it in the UK, the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 works great with the HD560S

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

It will get very loud with crystal clear sound.

Because it will automatically go into low gain mode with the HD560S, You can get more power out of it by having the adapter for the HD560S plugged into the Sonata HD Pro when you connect it to your computer. Then plug the headphone cable in a few seconds after that. That fools it into going into high gain.

You want the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle that is currently on special for Prime Day

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

Measures as accurate as the best $200 desktop amp/DACs. And it has noticeably more headphone power output then my Samsung S9 plus. However, it does have an auto gain setting. So if you’re using low impedance headphones and you want more power, you have to fool it by having a headphone extension plugged in.

Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle measures even more accurate than the Meizu. And it has a full 2V DAC output, which is the standard, in case you ever wanted to add an external headphone amp (Meizu is 1V).

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

One downside. It auto senses the impedance, and so automatically sets the gain. The X2HR would automatically be set to low gain. Which might be fine for you.

But if you want more power out of it, you can fool it by having a headphone extension cord plugged into it. I use a 6-in extension with my 80 ohm Focal Elears. And then it senses infinite resistance and goes in high gain mode. Then plug the X2HR into the extension. Only takes a couple seconds to do this, So not really a big deal.

Turn off volume normalization on Spotify so it doesn’t compress the audio. That often helps with sound quality.

I would definitely look into HE400i and HE5XX. But you definitely might need an amp with either one of those. Particularly if you decide to boost the bass a little.

If you don’t have anything connected to the outputs on your Solo, the best option is an Atom or Heresy amp for $100. The Solo has a decent dac, and those are stellar amps that will work well with almost any headphone you might buy in the future.

The HIDISZ S8/Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle actually works very well with my HE5XX and measure super accurate. And I believe it has a little more power than the Solo.

The Denon D5200 has a different sound signature from the DT880. Could be you would like it better. Could be you wouldn’t.

The Denon 5200 are low impedance with high sensitivity. They are very easy to drive.

If you want to see how they would sound with a $200 desktop amp/DAC setup, check out the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 on Amazon. It competes in quality with the best $200 Setups. It just doesn’t happen but as much power, which you don’t need

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

if you decide later on you still want to upgrade to a new headphone that needs a more powerful amp, the Sonata HD Pro works well as a DAC. It measures better than the Schiit Modi 3 DAC. See my review of using it as a DAC

Well, definitely don’t spend more than $130. That E30 measures as well as $1,000 DACs.

The engineering of inexpensive DACs has advanced dramatically in the last few years, particularly with what’s been made available in the last year. So there’s still brands that have expensive DACs that don’t measure very well because they can capitalize off their brand name.

Meanwhile, there’s even a dongle DAC that measures about as accurate as that E30

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/hidizs-s8-usb-c-headphone-adapter-review.10823/

It’s also released under a different brand name as the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro, can be bought off Amazon for $40

Do you have an Android phone? If your headphones are not very difficult to drive, the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 from Amazon measures more accurate than the E10K, as well as the best $200 desktop amps / DACs, better than the $300 Audioquest Cobalt

No need to spend that much. The Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle goes for around $40 on Amazon and easily drives my HD660S to loud volumes.

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

And it measures more accurate than the best $200 desktop amp/DAC setups. It sounds just as good as my JDS Labs Atom/Topping D50S with the HD660S.

Works well on Android and Windows. Not sure about Apple.

The Tempotec is the same as the HIDIZS S8 (different enclosure and branding). See this measurement review https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/hidizs-s8-usb-c-headphone-adapter-review.10823/

And these user testimonial reviews

https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/tempotec-sonata-hd-pro.24181/

If you ever buy more difficult to drive headphones later, you can always use the Tempotec as a DAC alone and add an external desktop amp to it.

You can start by replacing that USB sound card with the Apple dongle. You may need a USB-C to USB-A adapter though.

Staying in the realm of dongles, the Tempotec Sonata is very good too.

If you like those, then you can start going down the rabbit hole of headphones, amps, dacs, and more!

I’m not familiar with the DH80. A Tempotec Sonata HD Pro or HIDISZ S8 should provide as much power as the dragonfly that you have, and it is more accurate. Then the S9 Pro would provide more power through its balance connection. And all of these dongles are easily arguable to be noise and distortion free in the range of human hearing. And they would have no trouble driving your Denons.

Consequently, these dongles are very popular over buying a larger unit that has a battery in it. Amazon has free returns, which means free return shipping if you don’t like it, on the Sonata HD Pro. So no penalty for trying it

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

Your IEMs aren’t defective, they’re just very sensitive. Most built-in computer sound cards are not very good quality and will have hissing and other noises when you use them with sensitive headphones like most IEMs. If the hiss bothers you, you can get something like this Tempotec Sonata DAC/amp https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD or you can shop around for other DAC/amps at other price points.

Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40

The Sonata HD Pro will automatically set itself to low gain for the HD560S. If you want more power out of it, plug the adapter cable for the HD560S into the Sonata HD Pro. Once your computer or phone registers the Sonata HD Pro then plug in the headphones into the adapter. That will fool it into high gain mode.

>I don’t have balanced cables for the 58X. They don’t seem like a good purchase yet considering budget.

Balanced cables do not add a sound improvement benefit. Balanced output for headphones is useful when you have difficult to drive headphones, and so a balanced amp can provide more power. The HD58X are not difficult to drive, so I would not worry about balanced.

Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle measures as accurate as the best $200 desktop amp/DAC setups and while drive the HD58X to moderately loud volume with crystal clear sound: https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

The Sonata HD Pro is so accurate that it is easily arguable to be noise and distortion-free within the range of human hearing. The HIDISZ S8 is the same dongle:

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/hidizs-s8-usb-c-headphone-adapter-review.10823/

Compared that to the ifi Zen’s DAC

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/ifi-zen-dac-and-headphone-amp-review.9885/

The Sonata HD Pro is much better.

If you want a desktop setup with a volume control, a JDS Labs Atom or Schiit Heresy amp for $100 plus an Apple USB-C dongle to use as a DAC is a better setup than the iFi Zen.

Just know that “scaling” is a controversial topic. The audio science tells us that if an amp can drive a pair of headphones to the listeners preferred volume, without distortion, with enough headroom for dynamic peaks, then additional power doesn’t do anything. Your K371 are easy to drive.

Meanwhile, a Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 will easily drive them. And it measures as accurate as the best $200 desktop amp/DACs. So accurate that it is easily arguable that it is noise and distortion free within the range of human hearing. >Sorry my ignorance but having more sampling rate would give me more levels of signals ?

Your ears are the problem. There are limits to human hearing.

CD quality 44.1/16 bit pretty much gets you there. There are some arguments to be made that 44.1/24bit might theoretically offer some tiny improvement in sound. But it’s really not worth worrying about since most of us don’t listen loud enough to take advantage of the extra dynamic range.

>Do you know anything good around the 60/70€ budget ?

Depends on which headphones you end up with. The HIDISZ S8 is an excellent dongle that would work well with a lot of headphones. Also sold in a different enclosure as the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro. Assuming you don’t get 250 ohm for higher studio headphones, it will work very well and is more accurate than E10K.

If you want something all in one I would go with the commonly recommended SMSL ad18 or sa300 ($140 ish) depending on if you need a headphone jack or not.

If you don’t care if the dac and amp are separate you could get a small amp similar to the one you suggested (around $50-70, many options which are all basically the same which may or may not include bluetooth) and a USBC dongle DAC which can range from the Apple dongle ($9) to a tempotec ($40) to a Schiit Modi ($100) to anything between or above as your heart desires.

DAC engineering as greatly advanced in the last few years, and the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 measure so accurate, that a more accurate, more expensive DAC / headphone amp would sound the same due to the limits of human hearing.

In other words, you could buy a $250 DAC / headphone amp setup, it’s going to sound the same with your headphones because they don’t need the extra power that a desktop setup would have.

$190 for the Nextdrive Spectra X? I can definitely tell you that’s a rip off.

The HIDIZS S8 dongle measures extremely accurate. Much more accurate than the $300 Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt. So accurate that it competes with $1,000 DAC’s. M50X are a good headphone at that price. I prefer them over AKG K371.

You could save some money on the DAC/amp. Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 and will drive them with crystal clear sound to moderately loud volume, and beats out the $300 Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt dongle
https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/
It measures as accurate as the best $200 desktop amp / DAC setups.

I used to have the HD58X and the HD6XX. I prefer HD6XX for classical and some jazz, but for most other genres, I prefer HD58X because they are more engaging due to slightly large sound stage and more balanced sound. so it’s really a personal thing as to which is better

They’re also easier to drive. Consequently, you could pick up the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 and it will drive them with crystal clear sound to moderately loud volume, and beats out the $300 Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt dongle

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

It measures as accurate as the best $200 desktop amp / DAC setups. You can spend more money to get more power, but not to get more accurate sound.

The HD660S are easy to drive. you really might want to try them first with what you have.

Do not buy Schiit multibit DAC upgrades. They perform much worse than without the upgrade.

The $40 Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 measures more accurate than the Magni/Modi 3 stack. Works with Windows and Android. Not sure about Apple.

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

It drives the HD660S to moderately loud volume with crystal clear sound. I have both the HD660S and the Sonata HD Pro, and can strongly recommend it. Sounds just as good as my $250 desktop amp / DAC setup.

Can also be used as just a DAC if you ever want to add a more powerful amp.

Pyle electronics are quite literally a pile of crap. Besides the fact that you don’t need an amplifier.

There’s been a big engineering design jump this year in DACs with a few models out that just blow away most legacy models. If you want an excellent budget DAC, the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 can compete in sound quality with DACs costing hundreds of dollars. The noise and distortion is so low that it is arguably beyond the range of human hearing.

https://www.amazon.com/Amplificador-Sonata-PRO-Decodificaci%C3%B3n-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

It does have a volume control on it, but it’s better to leave it up and use the software control on Windows because the volume steps are really big.

Here are a bunch of reviews using the headphone output which can give you an idea of how good it sounds

You might notice a difference if you go with a better measuring DAC, like the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro which measures extremely accurate. See my review

https://www.reddit.com/r/BudgetAudiophile/comments/ibmnnf/best_budget_dac_tempotec_sonata_hd_pro_usbc_dongle/

And you might not find the difference significant. Amazon has free returns, so free return shipping if it doesn’t help: https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

Note that the Sonata HD Pro will also run the HD58X at moderately loud volume all by itself, arguably noise and distortion-free within the range of human hearing. But once again, don’t expect significant differences.

Don’t expect a dramatic difference. your headphones are not difficult to drive, so you won’t benefit from a more powerful headphone amp. The amount of benefit you’ll get from going to an external device might not be as much as you hope.

Given how easy your headphones are to drive, the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 will perform as well or better as the alternatives you are considering.

The Sonata HD Pro measures as accurate as the best $200 desktop amp/dacs. It just doesn’t have as much power, which your headphones don’t need.

>Im not so sure about sound cards, do they work like amps or dacs?

Not sure what you mean. The G6 is a headphone amp / DAC.

>Should i buy the soundblasterx g6?

What are you hoping to improve? The HD58X are easy to drive. Consequently, they likely don’t need a headphone amp the way that other headphones do. Depending on the quality of the DAC/amp in your computer, you might not know this much sound quality improvement.

Also, unless you listen really loud, the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 on Amazon is a better measuring DAC/amp than the G6.

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

Because some people like to pick the DAC and amp separately, based on their needs or wants.

A desktop DAC is not designed to run headphones.

If you want a DAC/amp that will drive the DT1990 to moderately loud volume that is very portable, check out the HIDISZ S8. Measures as well as the best $200 desktop amp/DACs

>or this whole DAC game is just placebo?

Audio science has already confirmed that personal testimonials of how DACs, and amps, sound compared to each other are often unreliable. For example, a volume level difference 0.5db between two DACs that should sound the same would bias the test to make one sound better.

You can always look at the specifications and manual for any amplifier or receiver to see if it has the type of digital connection that you need. In fact, receivers have so many different features, it’s always good to verify that a receiver has the feature you want, as it’s easy for anybody to get that mixed up.

I think this one has optical. You’ll have to check the manual and see if it has USB input for the built-in DAC.

Because the M50X are 38 ohms, the Sonata HD Pro will automatically set itself to low gain. If you decide you want more power out of it, you can plug in a 3.5mm extension into the Sonata HD Pro first. I used to own the HD58X. The DT990 more popular for gaming for their bigger sound stage. HD58X are known for their imaging. difficult to say what you would like better, as sound stage and imaging perception is a little bit individualistic, as we have different ears and heads. And of course the mix on some games might be more or less better with one or the other.

in other words, there’s no definitive answer as to what you would like better. I will say the HD58X are easy to drive and generally do not need a headphone amp.

If you still want a high quality DAC/amp, The Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle on Amazon has enough power for them for moderately loud volume. and it measures as accurate in terms of sound quality as the best $200 desktop amp/dacs.

if you’re interested, I think Amazon has free returns on it. So worth giving it a shot.

I will say that 80 ohm headphones it auto-detects as low impedance. But you can fool it by having a headphone extension plugged into it when you plug it into the USB port. Then it thinks there’s infinite resistance. Then connect the headphones to the headphone extens.

Difficult to say. I couldn’t find any independent measurements of how that unit performs to know how good the sound quality is. And also to check to make sure that it doesn’t have a high low output impedance for an amp, which would affect the sound quality of the X2HR since they are low impedance headphones.

The Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 on Amazon is super accurate. As accurate as the best $200 desktop amp /DAC’s

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

If Amazon has free returns, that means free return shipping, so no penalty for trying.

Since the X2HR is a low impedance headphone, you might have to fool the Sonata HD Pro into running on high gain since it has an auto-sensing mechanism.

To do that, you simply have to have a headphone extension with nothing plugged into it, plugged into the Sonata HD Pro when you connect it to your phone or your computer. Then it senses infinite resistance and automatically goes a high gain. Then you can plug on the X2HR. Here’s the cable I use

The HIDIZS S8 is the same unit, with different branding in a different enclosure. So someone in this discussion thread at ASR may have experienced using it with iPhone. You might ask questions there after searching the thread

I don’t know if it works with raspberry pi. You have to research it. But the HIDIZS S8 dongle measures more accurate than the Modi 3.

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/hidizs-s8-usb-c-headphone-adapter-review.10823/

It is also released in a different enclosure with a different brand name, Tempotec Sonata HD Pro fo $40 on Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

Lots of smart techie guys at ASR in the HIDIZS S8 discussion thread who would probably know whether it works with the raspberry pi.

>I also have an FX Audio DAC X6 and a Dragonfly Red.

Sell your Dragonfly Red. It’s not commonly known yet, but all of the Dragonflies are now obsolete. Then get the get the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 off Amazon and pocket the difference

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?

Same as the HIDIZS S8, but rebranded in a different enclosure, which measures much better than Dragonfly Cobalt and Red, as accurate as thousand dollar DACs

The HD58X are fairly easy to drive. That being said, depending on your mobile phone and you’re preferred listening volume, your phone amp might not be rendering the dynamics very well.

The Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 on Amazon drive them noticeably louder then my Samsung S9 plus with crystal clear sound. Works well with Android and Windows. Not sure about Apple.

Amazon has free returns on it. Which means free return shipping if you don’t like it. So little penalty for trying

I wouldn’t worry about it when building your PC. You can just buy an external DAC/amp.

For example, Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 off Amazon will drive the M50X to loud volume with clear sound.

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

I own one, and it has better sound quality to me than my Samsung S9+ with more headphone power output.

You will be able to listen to your DT 770 on your phone.

If you find you’re running your phone at or near full power for your preferred listening volume, you can try a Tempotec Sonata HD Pro for $40 for Amazon to give it some extra boost

Heck, the HIDIZS S8 measures better than my Atom/D50S stack

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/hidizs-s8-usb-c-headphone-adapter-review.10823/

And you can get it rebranded in a different enclosure as the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro for $40 from Amazon

I agree. The Atom is a great choice basic preamp.

If you also need a USB DAC, check out the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle on Amazon for $40

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

It is the same as the HIDIZS S8 dongle (different enclosure and branding) that Audio Science Review measured. It has considerably less distortion than your Modi 3
https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/hidizs-s8-usb-c-headphone-adapter-review.10823/

Can’t lose for $40 😁

HD58X and HD6XX are too popular options.

I prefer HD6XX a little bit over HD58X for jazz. But then HD58X are easier to drive and often do not need an amplifier. in fact, they will easily drive to loud volumes with the TempoTec Sonata HD PRO dongle for $40 on Amazon. Works well with Android and Windows. Not sure about Apple

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

HD58X sound just as good with the tempotec as they do with my $250 headphone amp / DAC setup. It measures so accurate that it is distortion free within the range of human hearing.

Check out these reviews https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/tempotec-sonata-hd-pro.24181/

So for less than the HD6XX, you can get the HD58X and make them as good as they’re going to sound with external DAC/amp

Many people find the SHP9500 a little bass light. The X2s have a good bit of extra midbass emphasis. So you could decide based on that.

Sennheiser HD58X are another headphone you might look into.

The Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 on Amazon is more accurate DAC/amp than the E10K. It will easily drive the X2’s to very loud volume

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

Works great with Windows and Android. Not sure about Apple. Sounds just as good as my $250 desktop DAC/amp stack.

JDS Labs Atom stack or Schiit Heresy and Modi 3+ for $200 are easily arguable to be noise and distortion-free within the range of human hearing. The highest fidelity you can perceive. And they will drive 99% of headphones. So you would be all set.

For example, check out some of these measurements

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/jds-labs-atom-dac-review.14002/

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-new-jds-labs-atom-headphone-amp.5262/

Then, if you have an Android phone, I use a Tempotec Sonata HD pro with my S9+ and the HD660S. It measures about as accurate as those desktop setups

>ask whether it is needed to get an AMP/DAC when I want to use them primarily with my smartphone (Samsung S9).

Unless you like to listen to that very quiet volume most likely yes.

>I have been thinking about buying AudioQuest Dragonfly Red – is it a good choice?

No. Not a good choice. Old product, and the market has evolved in the last couple of years. There are better options for less money.

For example, Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $37 on Amazon measures more accurate

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

Works great with my S9 plus. However, not sure it or the dragonfly would be 250 ohm headphones.

2i2 has a good dac, and good sounding headphone output. But it’s headphone amp output is a little weak.

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/focusrite-scarlett-2i2-audio-interface-gen-3-review.10187/

So as long as you get headphones that are not difficult to drive, you do not need another DAC / amp.

Except for the MQA feature, which is arguably lower fidelity since it is less accurate sound reproduction, Dragonflies have been outclassed by HIDISZ S8, which performs better than even the Cobalt

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/hidizs-s8-usb-c-headphone-adapter-review.10823/

That measures better than the mojo

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-chord-mojo-dac-and-amp.5120/

The S8 is sold with different branding and enclosure as the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro

>the minefield that is DACs that can be used as a headphone amp.

A DAC is a digital to audio converter. It’s not meant to be used as a headphone amp.

So more correctly, what you’re looking for is one that has both capability built in.

Dragonflies are kind of obsolete technology now. The $40 Tempotec Sonata HD Pro is higher fidelity.

Grados are fairly easy to drive.

Get a Tempotec Sonata HD Pro. Measures is accurate as the $200 Schiit desktop amp/dac stack. It just doesn’t have as much power, which you don’t need

The Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 measures is accurate as the best $200 desktop amp/dacs. It just doesn’t have as much power, but your headphones are easy to drive.

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

Because your headphones are 32 ohms, it will automatically set to low gain. You can get a little more volume out of it by fooling it to go into high gain. I use this extension with my 80 ohm headphones.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07QG1CCTF

Plug it in first, and the Sonata HD Pro does not sense low impedance. Then you can plug the headphones in to the extension.

Take your current headphones. turn them up to your average listening volume. Lay them face up playing into the air on a desk or table. A pair of open headphones won’t be quite that loud in the room because a lot of the sound is directed at your ears.

Check out the new Sennheiser HD560S that are releasing this week
https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/headphones/measurements/brands-s-se/hd-560s/
Looks like a good fit for what you want. They are also fairly easy to drive. You could easily find you don’t need an amp.

And if you still want one, Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 will drive them to moderately loud volume with crystal clear sound

>Will I be able to get away with just the e10k?

I would try the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 first. It measures as accurate as the best desktop and / DAC setups. It just doesn’t have as much power. Depending on your listening volume and whether or not you use EQ to boost the bass, you might be very satisfied with it

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

And if you ever do want more headphone power, it works great as a DAC used with the $100 JDS Labs Atom or Schiit Heresy.

>it’s not in my skill set yet per se but figure I could learn to solder and flip them for a profit,

Don’t count on making a lot of money.
The HIDIZS S8 dongle measures much more accurate than even the Dragonfly Cobalt

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/hidizs-s8-usb-c-headphone-adapter-review.10823/

The Tempotec Sonata HD Pro is the same dongle, only in a different enclosure with different branding, it costs $40 on Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

So no one on the r/headphoneadvice is recommending that anyone buy a Dragonfly anymore. Not when the Sonata HD Pro is better than the best Cobalt for 15% of the price.

Or, you could get whatever Android phone you want with a USB-C connector and get a Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle from Amazon for $40

https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/

This measures more accurate than the best $200 desktop DAC/amp setups. It drives my Focal Elear and Sennheiser HD660S to loud volumes with crystal clear sound and sounds as good as my JDS Labs Atom and Topping D50S desktop stack.

Ifi Zen DAC has very poor power output

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/ifi-zen-dac-and-headphone-amp-review.9885/

JDS Labs Atom stack or Schiit Heresy and Modi 3 for $200 would be much better.

For that matter, if you were trying to save money, the Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle for $40 measures is accurate as the other DACs. You can use it with the Atom or Heresy amp and save 60 bucks. I can’t tell any real difference between it and my Topping D50S DAC when used with my Atom amp on Windows
