Tai Hao makes a similar color scheme but obviously much worse quality than gmk and PBT+OEM profile.

Haha, I got my keycaps for pretty cheap off Amazon. I was surprised to find Taihao Doubleshot PBT keycap sets for only about $35.
Edit: Link to keycaps (they seem to be out of stock right now. If you look up “taihao” on amazon other colorsets are availiable) https://www.amazon.com/Carbon-Black-anti-biosis-coating-Originative/dp/B01LWUJ2AR/

Thanks for the explanation. I see that the majority of carbon keycaps are in that orange/white/black colorway, however these are all black but they’re also called “carbon”. I assume the carbon only refers to the black keycaps (i.e. carbon black)?

I’m new to the whole custom keyboard scene. Could you please explain what SA and cherry profiles are?

I mentioned in another reply that I got them from Amazon, designed by Originative, so the set you saw is probably the same one I got!

I wanted to get a carbon set for my QFR, and found a Tai-Hao one on Amazon. Does anyone know if the keycap thickness is someone a little bit more than the thickness on the QFR caps? Also should I get these Tai-Hao PBT set or should I go for a thick pbt set somewhere else.

Hey guys,
This is actually a set designed by Originative Co. They initially brought the set through massdrop during last February. The set is now available on Amazon and select online retailers.

They are Taihao Doubleshot PBT keycaps. They seem to be out of stock right now in that color, but if you look up “taihao” on amazon other colorsets are availiable. https://www.amazon.com/Carbon-Black-anti-biosis-coating-Originative/dp/B01LWUJ2AR/

I thought these Originative Carbon Black PBT keycaps were really nice for $50. Very thick, and the surface is slightly gritty if you like that. I believe this set on Amazon is the same, though it is unavailable right now.

It’s fine. Build quality is about the same as the backlit model. I have both in white/silver – Gateron brown model (backlit) and Outemu black model (non-backlit, except caps lock). Aside from the few differences I listed they’re virtually identical.
The best upgrade I can recommend is to get some PBT keycaps and depending on your preference put o-rings on them to dampen the sound / bottom-out impact. I use these – no idea if/when they’ll be back in stock on Amazon but they’re also on Originative’s website. Also if you get outemu switches and they feel too scratchy at first, they do smooth out after using them for a while. Never as smooth as Gaterons but they’re not bad at all.

🙂 I got them here a while back for around $50: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LWUJ2AR and they came in a small, black Originative branded box.
