Some of our kettles are alright — we just bought our second T-fal/Tefal variable temperature kettle which have been fast and reliable. That being said, all of the cheap big box kettles I’ve used have been admittedly crap.

I’ve owned and used this variable temp electric kettle for about three years at work, and six months ago bought another one for home. No problems whatsoever with it!

I’ve had this model for years: https://www.amazon.com/T-fal-Balanced-1750-Watt-Electric-Temperature/dp/B0086UJQN8/ It is made largely of plastic, but we like it in our house so much that when my roommate broke it (knocked it off the counter, it landed weird and the side cracked) she bought the same one as a replacement. If the current one breaks and it’s still for sale, I’d buy it again in a heartbeat. It’s currently $31 and has 3 temp settings – white, green and black. I haven’t tested how accurate the different temps are since green tea brewed at the green setting tastes good and black tea brewed at the black tea setting tastes good!

I got converted last year by someone on Reddit. I had stovetop kettles all my life until I bought this one last November. I bought kettles for all my friends for Christmas and gave away my stovetop kettle. Never going back. Using the electric kettle is so much faster than the stovetop kettle on electric stove, and I boil the exact amount of water I need for my tea. Love!

I’ve got two T-fal BF6138 kettles (one at home, one in the office) – it’s 1750 watts and I boil about 10oz/295ml at a time. I’d say it takes about 45 seconds.

I had a stovetop kettle which took so long to boil water for a cup of tea that I’d actually forget about it then be reminded when the whistle started.

Then someone on Reddit convinced me to try an electric kettle. I got this one and even with “only” 1750 watts, it has been a life changer. I pick a mug, fill it with water, and dump it into the kettle and turn it on. Then I choose my tea, get sweetener and a spoon, and the water’s boiling. Fantastic! I bought kettles for all my friends for Christmas last year. 🙂 I’m a convert! It’s fast, I’m only paying to heat the amount of water I actually need, and it’s FAST!

I used a 1L T-Fal electric kettle. It’s very cheap, pretty small, and it’s made of food grade plastic. It was still working after about a year of use, when I upgraded to a better kettle. https://www.amazon.com/T-fal-Balanced-1750-Watt-Electric-Temperature/dp/B0086UJQN8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468020408&sr=8-1&keywords=tfal+kettle

T-fal 1750 Watt

I read about the bonavita electric gooseneck on amazon. Lots of people complaining about rusting. Is it still the recommended one here?

For a cheaper kettle I use this one

I got it for $21, so it looks like the price is really high on Amazon right now.

The main advantage is that it also has variable temperature control. You need a thermometer to know what temperature it’s at though. I ran a couple tests and then marked it for future use. Turning the knob a little over a fourth of the way will be right around 195 which is my goto for the French press.

For Christmas though, I just received this electric kettle. It’s a nuisance in a one bedroom apartment to have extra appliances taking up kitchen space, but it does work a little faster than boiling on the stove. And you have a temperature gauge, basically far left for white tea, middle for green, and far right for black.

I use this and it works great for me. I only drink black and green, but there are three settings, the middle being for oloong or white. Works great so far. Bonus it is quite small for a non-traditional brewing spot like an office or a personal room.

Hmmm. If you had an electric kettle, and just kept the heat way down, that would get it nice and warm. Something like this with an adjustable temperature?

From what I read they said to lower the heat of the water if you’re getting sour flavors. Here’s the kettle I’m using.

Many Aeropress recipes use water temps well below boiling, maybe this t-fal variable temp would be better.

I have an electric kettle on my desk at work and it gets near constant use between my coffee and tea habits.

You can put the noodles directly into an electric kettle like this one.

ok, i am going to give you a bunch of links to look at, these should help you a little bit.

This is the water kettle I currently use.

I use either this or (this and this)

i drink tea from these places:

Enjoying tea (very affordable, decent tea, try the tangerine black)

Adagio (hit and miss, but cheap samples, try ceylon sonata and peach rooibos)

DAVIDsTEA (mostly flavored, lots taste like dessert, Saigon chai especially good)

New Mexico Tea Co. (try the rose dark tea hearts)

Beautiful Taiwan Tea Co. (I got sent their twisted green (bi luo chun) for review, it was very good)

also, invest in a digital probe thermometer, to make sure your water temperature is right. whites at 150 F, greens should be around 160 F, oolongs 170-180 ish depending on oxidation and roast, blacks at 205, and pu’erh at a full rolling boil.

oh, and welcome to /r/tea! We hope you have a good time, and please, pull up a chair and stay awhile!

For anyone looking for a cheap variable temperature kettle, I have this one and it’s been great for the past couples of use everyday.

I set the little dial to about 1/4 of the way to get the temperature between 195-200. The only issue is you have to fill it up to the liter mark, if you put in less it’ll boil and more will not get high enough.
