The center is a Sony SSCS8: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSCS3-Floor-Standing-Speaker-Single/dp/B00O8YLNRS/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3DYK9QZMTOLF6&dchild=1&keywords=sony%2Bfloor%2Bstanding%2Bspeakers&qid=1593454528&sprefix=sony%2Bfloor%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-3&th=1
And the surrounds are the following: Sony SS-MB150h https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-MB150H-Bookshelf-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B0002553J6
Wouldn’t I want to set the crossover about 10-15hz higher than the lowest they are rated to reproduce? In that case setting the center at 70hz (it can handle down to 55hz) and the sides to 90hz (since they can handle down to 80hz). Is this not the correct thinking?

I recommend spending an equal amount on video and audio. If that isn’t possible, start small and build up over time.
The first move is a surround receiver, instead of stereo. Plus the matching centre channel.

After that, another pair of speakers for side surrounds, if you can fit them in your room.

If you still want to spend more, a better subwoofer is next, followed by a second matching subwoofer.

Then it would be time to look at nicer speakers, starting with the centre channel and front L/R. Sky is the limit here, so check out the speaker buying guide.

Edit: Yes, the receiver is required.
