Save more. $300 doesn’t get you very far for home theater.
That being said, on a college budget I used my Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 ($149) to great effect alongside my projector. They’re THX-certified, the satellites get surprisingly loud, they have a great sound, and the 6.5″ sub is respectable. Can’t really add to ’em, but they might serve as an affordable stopgap until you get a proper amp and speakers.
The cheapest amp I can conscionably recommend is Sony STR-DH750 ($269 on Amazon). It goes on sale for $199 all the time, so keep your ear to the ground. Assuming you were left with $99 for bookshelfs, you have your pick of any of these. The Sony SS-B1000 ($69/pair) would probably complement the 750 best.
