In short, they suck. The reason is that all headphones have an internal equalization that adjusts the audio signal. The issue with the beats is that they boost bass and mid tones. If you were to use it while producing, you’ll find that your tracks will sound like shit on other speakers, because your beats don’t have a balanced audio signal.

TO BE FAIR, use what you got. But you will forever be frustrated with how your tracks sound on other speakers if you use beats. You want headphones with a flat audio signal, meaning they don’t boost anything and give you the cleanest signal possible.
Here’s the industry standard pair. They’re $100 and give you a nice, flat audio signal that will help you produce the best sound across the majority of speaker systems.

I am really satisfied with them. When I want some freedom I connect them in my Shield 2015 remote and have BT wireless 🙂
Remote itself is trash, but I found use for it 🙂

To answer the question, the material, size and quality of the speakers. Larger magnets, more windings on the speaker coil, and something better then a thin sheet of plastic that vibrates. Build/durability and quality off the materials used are also a factor. At the very basic level, $500 headphones are the same as the $5 headphones in the way they create sound
Every studio I have ever been in has the Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphones – Durable around workhorse, flat sound. Look at a few recording sessions on you tube most likely this is what they are using

That’s right folks, $20 bucks or so. Buy the replacement ear pads and you will be in heaven. do a comparison with the popular headphones with “b” on the side and tell me which was money well spent.
