Hey there,
Wireless is a whole nother beast. Youll need powered speakers and wireless receivers or speakers with wireless and you’ll need power by each location. Sonos is way over priced in my opinion but they offer good sound with ease of an app to manage the entire system… you can still get the version 1’s on amazon —-

> 1) How’s the reliability of these?
Many others have had good luck with them, i have not. When using mine over wifi, spotify loses track of the CCA when my phone goes to sleep. If i want to change song or anything, I have to reconnect to the CCA and start a new play session (stopping the current music). This happened across both multiple pixel phones and iphones, as well as three different wireless routers. Maybe my CCA is busted, but I transitioned over to used airport express which are cheaper than CCA and have ethernet ports built in.
> 2) Can I have them all play the same music together?
Yes you can create speaker groups, however I do not believe you can modify google cast groupings in real time like you can airplay and sonos.
> 3) Does it make more sense to get normal chromecasts with audio extractors, or even those google home spyboxes? Or sonos? Does that allow grouping too?
You’re going to pay about the same for a chromecast as for a chrome cast audio, unless you already have an HDMI receiver that you could use, just go the audio only route.
> google home spyboxes?
Being “heavily into the Google ecosystem” and going to assume you’re using an android phone means you already have a spybox in your pocket at all times. Don’t pretend there’s some huge difference having a dedicated smart speaker in your house if you’re using every other service and possibly a phone OS built by Google.

> 4) What speakers would you recommend? Budget ~$1000.
For simplicity, I would look at buying speakers with sonos or chromecast built in. Rather than trying to put together 4 pairs of receiver + speakers + CCA/sonos.
I haven’t had good experience with my CCA, but my FIL has all sonos and it always works flawlessly. $179 Sonos One SL gen 2 (no mic) would fit your budget nicely and would be my recommendation.
You might want to consider the Vizio Crave Pro. They’re heavily discounted on Amazon down to $70, quite hefty, and have decent sound for the price. Recent firmware updates have apparently addressed connectivity issues, and I haven’t had issues with mine that I don’t also experience with my CCA.
Other options to use up more of your budget: $199 Google Home Max. $179 JBL Playlist.
If you weren’t 100% into the Google ecosystem, the Apple homepod is head and shoulders above the rest of the smart speakers in terms of sound quality and can be had for $199 right now.
