Hey! I was in the same situation with my girlfriend when we first started dating. I had a very hard time slapping her or being rough in other ways.

What really helped was covering her face. I actually got a sleep mask from Amazon that’s super comfortable and covers most of her face

Honestly…a mask has changed my life.

Not just any mask, I went through like 5.

The best and most comfortable I’ve found is the "Sleep Master’. Its wide band so no pressure points, great coverage, adjustable fit…its perfect and it lasts forever…

It took about 2 weeks but my body is trained to the mask now. I can be tossing and turning all night but as soon as I get the mask on I’m out in 15 minutes.

I really like my Sleep Master mask. Every other mask that I’ve tried either lets light in around the nose or chafes my ears when the strap rubs against them. This keeps the light out completely and is soft and breathable against my face. Since it’s made of one solid piece of fabric, there’s no strap to rub against my ears. It also doesn’t leave any pressure marks on my face, like the 40 Blinks mask tended to do when I adjusted the strap too tight.

Cons:
-It noticeably soaks up the oil from my face. I hand wash it once a week.
-I sleep with earplugs, so I can’t speak to the “sound muffling” claims. Probably the sound muffling equivalent of pulling a quilt over your head.

It’s kinda expensive, but I used this sleeping mask when I worked night shifts. It gives a lot more coverage than most sleep masks, and wraps around your ears too, muffling out a little noise. I usually slept with a loud fan on to drown out the passing cars, housemates, and neighbor noises.
I don’t work nights anymore, but I do still use the sleeping mask for sleeping on long road trips when the sun is right in my face. Sometimes it fell off, but it definitely stayed on a lot better than anything made with elastic, and the fabric feels nice and cooling on my face.

Also, for the curtains, there are blackout curtain rods that are made in an attempt to make the curtains sit flush against the wall. I think I just pinned my curtain against the window and moved my regular rod higher up (so light wouldn’t come out above the curtain).

One thing I did that I REGRETTED FULLY back then was I went on /r/nosleep thinking it was about people who couldn’t sleep. I got a little addicted to the scary stories, but they riled me up and made me so afraid and I couldn’t sleep. Eventually I started hallucinating about scary shit because of the stories, lack of sleep, and the wrong antidepressants.

You need one of these. Make fun all you want, but they work.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve started having trouble sleeping in a room with too much light, and between needlessly-bright LEDs on electronics, blinding exterior lighting left on all night by asshole neighbors, and a bedroom window that gets the morning sun, I was having trouble getting enough sleep.

Rather than put up blackout curtains in addition to my existing window blinds and put tape, etc over LEDs, I spent the $20 for the mask. It’s better because I can throw it in my bag when I travel so I’m assured of adequate darkness wherever I end up sleeping.

I’ve got this sleep mask now for about 3 years and really happy with it. Super comfortable and blocks out all light. Also recommended by Tim Ferris: https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Master-smblu01-Mask/dp/B0015NZ6FK (not affiliated with it)

I own both of these, I use them both depending on how I feel that night:

Sleep Master Sleep Mask. This one is the more comfy of the two. It is very wide, and covers the ears as well, which provides slight muffling for sound.

Bucky 40 Blinks Ultralight & Comfortable Contoured, No Pressure Eye Mask for Travel & Sleep. This one provides pretty much perfect darkness, but is slightly less comfortable. It has contours inside the mask, so you can actually open your eyes and still see complete darkness.

I slightly prefer the bucky,

This one is awesome. They can be washed and hold up well. They’re a bit more expensive but well worth it. I’ve had some of the cheaper options and they fall apart.

If you’re looking for a solution that doesn’t involve confronting the roommate, upgrade to a better sleep mask (and supplement with ear plugs if needed.) This is the best sleep mask on the market: https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Master-smblu01-Mask/dp/B0015NZ6FK It even covers your ears to muffle sound.
