For the more audiophile inclined, check out the Sennheiser 599SE
https://www.amazon.ca/Sennheiser-HD-599-SE-Special/dp/B07RFNZYJZ
Amazing sound stage and quality, don’t really need a Dac but benefits from one still, and goes on sale for quite cheap at times. If you can get it for 170-220, it’s an amazing deal.
I highly recommend just buying a separate mic, as you can more easily spec for the quality of each item, and if one breaks, you don’t have to replace both.
·
I know it’s too late now, but the HD 599SE were on sale on Prime day for $99. My friend got them and absolutely loves them, she doesn’t have a DAC.

Cooler Master MH-751 MH751 2.0 Gaming Headset
I’ve had hyperx cloud 1 and Sennheiser HD 599 SE, and Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum, my frame of reference is limited. Mh-751 are a great balance of everything. Much better sound quality then hyperX, logitech. Sennheiser were open back so sound was a better. But Mh-751 detachable mic and cable, also no background staticky noise (I keep my PC volume max, and the volume knob on the headphones at lowest).
Hope this helps
·
It looks like they have been discontinued and upgraded to the HD599, at the same price as the 598 used to be: Sennheiser HD 599 SE Around Ear Open Back Headphone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RFNZYJZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_VoG.FbDF7A8NQ
And yeah, I usually just use the mic on my webcam but the Antlion ModMic is a popular add-on mic for this kind of headphones. Gaming headsets usually have pretty crap audio, mics, and build quality for the price, the modmic+599s will demolish any similarly priced gaming headset.
·
HD599 is currently $100 on Amazon for the next 4 hours on lightning deal. That is a great headphone for the price
https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-599-SE-Headphone/dp/B07RFNZYJZ/
Comes with free returns, which means free return shipping if you don’t like it. Might as well give it a shot.
·
> For good directionality, I’d go with the Sennheiser 599’s though they are definitely not as good of a deal as the M40x
These black Sennheiser HD599 SE are 50%-off ($99.95). Just in case anyone was wondering, the SE version is the same as the regular HD599, they’re just in black, and are SE (Special Edition) because they are an Amazon-only product.
·
Great entry choice. Keep an eye on some open backs like Sennheisers for a second set. Good price on HD 598’s on Amazon right now, but you probably don’t need another set quite so soon.
·
hey one last question, i’m looking on amazon to buy the HD 599 and I spot the much cheaper 100$ version but it has an SE prefix. What does that mean? Is it worse? I think the cream colored ones are ugly and I would rather spend less on the same thing.

·
The Sennheiser HD599’s hands down are the most cost effective. You can pick them up on Amazon right now for $130 and really do not require an Amp/DAC combo. I’ve had them for a couple years now and love them.
https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-599-Open-Headphone/dp/B07RFNZYJZ?th=1
The HD600’s I have are on sale for $300 on Amazon right now, but they really need an Amp/DAC combo to get the most out of them which is about another $250 if you go with the Schiit stack I have so about $550 in total give or take shipping/tax.
·
Take a look at these. Looks like they updated to these, but practically the same thing. They usually go on sale pretty often too, but the other color it comes in is less expensive if you want it now. If its too much, I’d look into something like the SHP9500 with a mod mic as a poor man’s version of the Sennheisers. Ultimately as I’ve learned with headphones, you just have to go for something and hope it works because eveyone online will have different opinions.
·
What about these? Would these headphones be decent for gaming and music in a quiet setting?
The SE black ones for $99.95USD seem to be the exact same headphones as the Ivory colored ones.
·
Do you mind using open back headphones? Open back headphones mean that there is no cover between the outer ear cups and the drivers (speakers.) That means a natural sound, with the drawback meaning sound bleed. If you’re using them at home, and won’t mind sound bleed, check out an open back headphones.
With that said, I’d recommend the Sennheiser HD 599. They’re on sale for $100 on Amazon (for the black SE) and sound amazing for that price. Way better than those Logitech. They are also super comfortable.

·
I owned both the M50x and the HD 599 and eventually ended up selling my m50x’s due to the 599 being more comfortable for wearing long periods of time.
On amazon the HD599 run for $150. They are a slightly bass boosted version of the HD598 and are O]open back (unlike the closed back m50x) so you get that sound stage your looking for where it seems like the sound is coming from around you vs from the actual headphone.. Ive used them for PUBG and are great for sound whoring same for COD:MW! Also a huge edm guy and these things are really nice for house, dubstep anything really even rock or hip hop, The bass is definitely there.
·
You could take a look at HD 599 SE, there was a sale ($130 instead of $200) on Amazon but it ended yesterday. You would have to wait for the price to drop again, possibly $100 on Black Friday.

Ummm, 599s are $200 off
·
notably to add these 599s are half the price of the 560s right now (even though the ivory ones look much better)
·
Hey. Don’t know if you are still looking for headphones but here is the sale on the 599. Cheers!

Open or closed back?
The difference is; “Open-back headphones are designed so that the outer shell of the ear covering is perforated in some fashion, typically with horizontal cutouts. Closed-back headphones have a solid outer shell with no perforations of any sort such that the shell effectively cups the entire ear”
To paraphrase open back audio leaks(others can hear depending on volume). (Imo) better audio localization during FPS games. Good for surround sound feature.
Closed back; similar to skull candy in a sense your voice gets muffled when you talk (best description I can think of) sound barely escapes and depending on the pads u can’t hear anything not even ur voice.
It’s just preference neither are good or bad, I prefer open though.
Open back:
Sennheiser HD 599 SE Around Ear Open Back Headphone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RFNZYJZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_CbKwFb5FSNXXP
That’s what I personally use, got it for ~$80 which is a pretty damn good deal. New for $200~ is still worth imo but u could look on the subreddit markets for a good deal.
Closed back:
Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones, Black, Professional Grade, Critically Acclaimed, With Detachable Cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVLUR86/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_AeKwFbWK3692B
Solid reviews for closed back around that price range. Never personally used it, but the research shows it’s good.
Do you also want a mic? If so;
Antlion Audio ModMic Uni Attachable Noise-Cancelling Microphone with Mute Switch Compatible with Mac, Windows PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and More https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YN25KWN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_PgKwFbX7AXZS2
Good mic, better than most gaming combo headphones with mic imo. Can be attached to the headphones of your choice.
These are the bang for the buck IMO. There is possibly better ones out there for a higher price but I personally don’t find any use for them.
If you want to get more out of these headphones if you decide to buy em.
Check out GSX 1000, got it for ~$100 used and it’s the best ~$100 I spent all year tbh. Makes my headphones worth far more than they are. So I would recommend investing in good headphones that won’t rip through your budget and combining it with something like the gsx 1000.

Sennheiser HD 599 SE and then get a separate mic if you need one. Don’t get the newer Sennheiser gaming headsets by EPOS unless you have a really tiny head. I tried the Sennheiser EPOS GSP 600 and while it’s a good headset, it’s so tight that it hurt my head and I had to return it. I found many others with the same complaint.

Kind of stuck with what I want as far as a gaming headset is concerned with emphasis on multiplayer FPS (footsteps and such). Right now I have a GSP 500 headset which I feel is great but I am looking to move away from the bulky “gamey” look so I’m going towards headphones and standalone mic.
I do like treble but also like good crispy kabooms.
My budget is around $350 and it seems like I am stuck between the:
- HD 599 SE – $329
- Fidelio X2HR – $202 + $25 import fee
- DT 770 80 / DT 770 250 – $250 + $22 import fee / $224
- ATH-ADG1X – Temporarily unavailable
I know that this is a mixture of both open and closed models and that they both offer their own type of sound signature so you can’t have everything. I’ve owned both in the past so I can appreciate the benefits and shortcomings of both.
It’s a big rabbit hole too. Sound is probably one of the most subjective things and I can never find a general idea of what is better than the other other than they’re all great in their own way.
I also have the most “okayiest” Sybasonic amp/dac to drive these if needed with maybe an exception to the 250 Ohm 770.
Thoughts? Other recommendations? I may have missed?
·
For my rig I would say yes, but part of that is because they seem much easier to drive. The pc37x seems like a tighter soundstage by design but I can pick out sound ques after a few weeks with either of them easily, I just prefer how the 599 seems, almost effortless with how it places the sound ques in a wide field.
If you’re going directly to a PC I would go with the 599, it’s more comfortable and it doesn’t need any help to sound incredible. With the pc37x I came really close to buying a DAC and AMP to see if I really could get better positional audio specific to the DAC, but the reality is I just don’t need more accuracy, it’s plug and play, and it’s more comfortable.
You’ll need a separate mic, I have a wired and wireless https://antlionaudio.com and they both provide clear communications. The wireless is nice as you only have the headset wire to deal with, but the wired is nice because you never have to take it off and charge it. No noticeable change is quality of voice (once you get your chat app and pc mic settings correctly, took me 30 minutes to figure out why my mic was low.
The headset you’ll want to set up like any Sennheiser headset where you select both the direct audio and the direct mic within Microsoft or it will sound terrible as it tries to force mic and headset signals the wrong way. If you haven’t done it before you can message me back and I’ll go track down the Sennheiser instructions.

> I haven’t owned headphones anywhere near these before, only IEMS. So it’s difficult for me to say which sound signature I like without having any reference point – I’m going to have to try them out to figure it out.
I understand. I’m sure I’ve owned or demoed at least 100 headphones by now. And I know how to interpret headphone measurements. So it gets easier, but it takes a lot of experience. And even then, it’s still a bit of a guess.
Too bad there’s a pandemic. If you live in a major metro area, Head-Fi often had member-organized meetups in many cities where you can listen to many headphones. I must have tried 25 to 30 headphones by attending a couple of meetups.

> Is the 6XX so different enough that it makes sense having it as an additional headphone to any of the others(budget allowing of course)?
Depends on how much you like it. I had the HD6XX. Bought it because I eventually succumbed to all of the hype. And then I rarely used it compared to my other headphones. Other people love it, and have only it despite trying many other headphones.
Best bet is to choose two headphones that you are interested in, but are not super similar, and order them from places with good return policies. See the return shipping as a worthwhile demo fee. At least that’s what I do when I order a pair.
And if you find something you like on Amazon, they often have free return shipping. Or for that matter, maybe you just try something like the HD599 since it has free return shipping with the idea of sending it back unless you love it:
https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-599-SE-Headphone/dp/B07RFNZYJZ/
Take note on how you feel about the quality and quantity of its bass, mids, treble, and soundstage. That would give a better frame of reference since many people are familiar with that headphone.

Can you do open headphones? They typically have a bigger soundstage than closed headphones, which is a plus for music.
Amazon has the HD599 currently on sale for $99 with free shipping on returns. So little penalty for trying them out: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RFNZYJZ/
·
HD599 are on special for $100 : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RFNZYJZ/
These are open headphones, so they create a bigger soundstage, which is more immersive for music. Since Amazon has free return shipping on them if you don’t like them, I would give them a try. If you like the open headphone effect, you could then (a) keep them or (b) return them and then get a more expensive pair of open headphones.

Sennheiser HD599 SE are currently on sale at Amazon for $100. These are very good open headphones.
https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-599-SE-Headphone/dp/B07RFNZYJZ/
A step up is the Sennheiser HD58X special edition headphones at drop.com for $150. I believe if you’re a first time buyer there, they also give you a $10 coupon.
https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-sennheiser-hd-58x-jubilee-headphones
Both of these are fairly easy to drive and shouldn’t need a headphone amp. My HD58X work very well with my Samsung S9+ phone

Wireless headphones may give you problems with lag when gaming.

I’m an audiophile and becoming a cinephile. Finding songs that aren’t there same fuckin 4 chords and have a wide dynamic range sends chills through my body. Noticing tiny details in cinematography, acting, and narrative in movies also gets me going.
If you love music, here’s what you need to do:
1) download Tidal for uncompressed music goodness.
2) Get a pair of really good headphones: Open back for home
Closed and noise canceling for when you’re out
3) Enjoy.
PS: Be sure to shop around and use things like Honey to get free coupons
Also I’m a fuckin weeb

Bluetooth headphones are not great for gaming because of potential lag.
The Sennheiser HD599 are currently on sale for $130: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RFNZYJZ/ . These are excellent open headphones that have a large soundstage, a plus for gaming. You would need to add your own mic. But then if the mic breaks, you can always replace it and not have to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Budget Option – many guys use Sony Bluray players as CD players.
you could go with a desktop dac and headphone amp and hook cd player to it…….Schiit or JDS Labs…….
I’m running an Topping MX3 desktop Dac/Amp/headphone amp with a 1990’s Sony 5 cd player thu it – but with your budget you could get Nicer Stuff……….
·
If you just want good headphones for gaming and don’t want to have to invest in additional gear like a DAC or headphone amp, just get the Sennheiser HD 599. I have the HD 598’s and they’re fantastic. Also quite popular in the gaming community. A lot of streamers either use them or have used them. They are open back though – so they will leak sound.
As for a mic, the Antlion ModMic would be my recommendation. If you don’t want to spend that much, just get something cheap like this until you’re ready to upgrade. I used that for years and it served me well.

I’ll have to test my Pro’s for those things like Harmonic distortion, I have never noticed anything wrong with them.
Maybe I just haven’t used a good headset, who knows.
Speaking of good headsets, would this one be a good choice?
Or do you have any recommendations for headphones /headset that are wired and have a similar ‘feel’ to the Pros (in that it’s comfortable and doesn’t let outside noise interfere?)
