I saw them fluctuate between $100 and $120 up until the 559s came out. Since then the price has been kind of all over the place.

Actually the HD559s are currently on sale on Amazon for $99, but I think that might still be out of OP’s price range.

Truly I wouldn’t buy any, for ~15 you won’t be able to find anything worth your time IMO. If you truly want a good pair of headphones to help you hear the piano better I would look for a balanced sound, most of the cheaper end or more mainstream stuff will have the bass boosted through the roof. It looks like the p45 uses a quarter inch headphone in, I would recommend a pair of Sennheiser HD559, they’re a solid pair of open backs and have a pretty decent soundstage, I’ve plugged these into my piano and it sounds pretty good through them.

Get something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-559-Open-Headphone/dp/B01L1IIEKM/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1GBKCMDNKOGNQ&keywords=hd+558&qid=1644763301&sprefix=hd+558%2Caps%2C164&sr=8-2

It’s only 100 dollars but a million times better than both headsets you own or any gaming headset you would find even if they are 3 times the price.

As for mic there’s clip on mics that are 5-20 dollars which aren’t bad especially compared to the gaming headset ones.

If you don’t mind the mic to be on your desk – fifine k669 is extremely cheap and very good sound for the price.

I am not a streamer nor a content creator but getting a better mic has been an amazing upgrade. Hearing the better quality prompted some of my discord friends to also buy better mics and the difference is big. It’s much more pleasant talking for hours with people that have nicer sounding mics. If it’s only for PUBG and you aren’t using the mic for anything else then yeah, just buy any cheap clip on one and you’d be fine.

It depends on what you’re doing, Amazon currently has a sale on Senn 599s for £73.99 which is an absolute steal and will be fantastic for general listening and playback! They’re open back so you can’t really record with them as a musician or vocalist as there would be bleed from the track and they’re not accurate enough for mixing. However, If you’re just looking for an awesome pair of headphones that punch well above their weight, I would definitely check out their specs!

I highly recommend these then. Might be a bit out of your budget, but Sennheiser makes some damn near indestructable stuff. I had the old version of these (558). Bought them used, so someone before me used them for who knows how long and how often. Probably a lot. But then I used them on a near daily basis for a few years before upgrading. Gave them to my cousin. They still sound just as amazing as they did when I first got them. They’re a decade old by now, minimum.

Also, they shouldnt need to much to be powered through your phone to be enjoyable. I remember my 558 being nice and loud on my phone without cranking the volume too loud. 558 was also extremely comfy. Nicely padded headband, comfy soft earcups.

Hey, the HDD 559 is available for 80 euros on amazon.fr and I believe it can be delivered to Netherlands 🙂

Plus that’s the regular price here in France, other stores sell it for the same price.

At that price point, go for the HyperX Cloud Alpha. It’s literally the best option.

If you actually care about sound quality for the headphones, the best option is to just go to Amazon and look at what Sennheiser, AKG, Audio Technica and Beyerdynamic offer at that price point. Personally I can say that Sennheiser HD559 is a pretty good headphone. Removable cable, easily replaceable padding, good sound quality.

those are good sounding, highly comfy cans, for 129 USD. Also, sennheiser products last a lifetime (and they produce some of the best cans known to man).

As for the rant, give me a sec and I’ll repaste it here 🙂

I ordered the hd 559 from amazon as they’re on sale. But I’m pretty sure they don’t come with the 3.5mm adapter. Is it safe for me to just buy a standar 3.5mm cable to use for the headphones, or should I buy the adapter?

All those dead channels most likely stem from broken cables, so I would highly recommend you get a headphone with a detachable wire.

Currently the HD559 is available for 114 EUR.

You can use it with a modmic or a desktop USB mic.

they are still being sold at a hefty price premium because they were just recently released.

Except the HD559, it’s price had already normalized…at least in GER, where the HD558 is not available anymore.

My recommendation would honestly to be stop looking at headsets and start looking at good headphones with a standalone mic.

If you liked the Sennheisers, the HD 559 are essentially the same actual drivers and similar fit, but doesn’t have the volume knob. Then you can add a mic to it with ModMic

Warning! Personal opinion ahead:

The 569’s are actually on display at the Chicago Microcenter (on Elston) and I went to try them out a couple months ago. I wasn’t too impressed with them sadly.

What I like: The comfort is good actually, as well as the build quality. While it is plastic, it’s surprisingly durable. Very similar build and material that my aging HD 518 uses (And I’ve beat those things up a little, had to change the pads recently). Although with them being on display, the pads and clamp are a bit worn in. Sennheiser’s are known for a heavier clamp, if you are ok with that. And despite having a 2.5mm connector for the headphones themselves, having a removable cable is a welcome feature and you can mod them to make it 3.5mm on both ends.

What I didnt like: The sound… this is where my disappointment lies. Now I will admit, I was testing them with my phone (Galaxy S9, 320kb MP3’s), but I sadly don’t have a portable amp. The Bass seemed accurate, but it sounded anemic, very little thump. The mids are… ok. Guitars and vocals are present, but don’t have much life to them. And the treble while there, was definitely reduced/rolled off. (This doesn’t bother me much since I’m a bit more sensitive to treble. The SHP9500’s I got recently actually gave me a slight headache first time I listened to music on them, but I’m adjusting to it.) Soundstage also seemed a bit narrow to me. The ATH M40X’s (I think? Might have been the 50’s.) that where also on display I thought sounded better, even though the pads where not comfortable.

Simply put: Not a bad choice, but I think there are better options available. I think my old Sennheiser 518’s (Open) and my much newer MH752’s (closed) sound better than the 569’s.

Now while I haven’t had the chance to listen to the open back 559’s… Those I have heard actually have more Bass and sound better than the 569, even though they are an open set of cans. They are also on sale, for $87.85 on Amazon.

Okay a couple of things:

Soundstage – the depth of sound. Controls how distant a sound is. Wide soundstage, wider value of perceived distance between sounds. Narrow soundstage, close distance between sounds. Generally for an immersive experience, wider is better.

Open back – there are holes in the cups of the headphones which allow air in and sound out. This compliments a wide soundstage. As a bonus you can vaguely hear things outside of your headphones.

Closed back – The opposite. No holes in cups, sound is isolated and cannot escape the cups. You cannot hear anything apart from the sounds.

A bonus one – Imaging: Imaging is the perceived direction of the sound. Better imaging is always better for games, as you can more accurately tell where sounds are coming from.

So onto your picks! I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990s and they are fantastic in my opinion. Great bass, great treble, V shaped signature. Fantastic imaging. IMO one of the best headphones you can get for shooters especially due to the enhanced bass and treble (treble is used for footsteps and in conjunction with imaging you can accurately determine where people are coming from, every time). Enhanced bass and it’s wide soundstage makes games like Battlefield feel very immersive. Honestly DT 990s are banging.

However I have to put some negatives here. They have no detachable cable, so if your cable breaks you’re shit outta luck. Is this gonna happen having headphones that are just used at a desk? Highly unlikely but worth mentioning.

Furthermore, some state that the treble is too high and can result in hurt ears, due to how sharp it is. Personally I don’t have this issue so I can’t comment, but I know others do, so I would consider whether you have treble sensitivity.

If you have treble sensitivity then you may want a more neutral sounding headphone. There are some I would recommend, such as the Phillips SHP9500, but they’re out of your price range (at least according to amazon UK @ £146.90 or one of Sennheiser’s offerings, such as the Sennheiser 599 which are in your price range, found here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-HD-559-Around-Headphone-Black-Anthracite/dp/B01L1IIEKM/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=sennheiser+headphones+598&qid=1603635389&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyVEZPR…

Now, a word of caution on the Beyerdynamic DT990s – they need an AMP. Otherwise they will be very quiet because they are moderately hard to drive. I recommend the SMSL-M3 DAC/AMP combo. Found for £73, and much better than rival products, such as the Fiio E-10K. It’s found here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SMSL-M3-Powered-Audio-Decoder/dp/B019Y5TR6O/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Smsl-m3&qid=1603635543&sr=8-1

So really as I see it you have a choice. Either go for the Sennheiser’s (which do not need an AMP), buy the AMP/DAC and the Beyers, buy the Beyers and save up for an AMP/DAC as you will need one, or save up for a different headphone such as the Phillips SHP9500 or the Phillips Fidelio X2s (insanely engaging, immersive headphones, found for around £150, imaging kinda sucks due to muddy bass though so bad for shooters).

In my opinion – the Beyers are a great choice but you need an AMP. Perhaps get them from somewhere with a good return policy and see how you feel? If they’re too quiet then get an AMP, if you’re treble sensitive then return them and look at the Sennheiser // Phillips suggestions above.

I’m sure others can help and have more info on neutral sounding headphones – if you have any questions about anything I have said, feel free to ask!

Do you have to have closed headphones? HD599 are currently on special on Amazon for $100: https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-559-Open-Headphone/dp/B01L1IIEKM/ . They usually run around $150 or so. Very good balanced sound. Easy to drive. And Amazon has free return shipping on them, so no penalty for trying them.

I’d probably just get Sennheiser HD 518 headphones and get a somewhat well reviewed mic for $12. Almost always the first thing that breaks on gaming headsets is the mic, or it causes interference or some crap. At least you can replace it this way.

Anything with the word gaming in it is generally overpriced and lower quality than you can usually get for the money. And virtually every head set has the word “gaming” in it.

That will be for the best, some apps really dont like having a mismatch of refresh rates, nor do nvidia graphics cards.

Also last i checked gsync compatible with multimonitor issues were fixed, just make sure you are on 430.xx driver or up. And as said already dont update graphics drivers willy nilly. Only if you are having issues or say a new game that you want to play releases.

Budget – $100ish usd, flexible for notable quality increases

Source – Mainly phone/portables, some PC & home theater amp

Requirements for Isolation – Very little, mostly home use

Preferred Type of Headphone – Over ear

Preferred tonal balance – Balanced w/ light bass preference, but kinda a newbie to this arena so unsure

Past headphones – Monoprice 8323, Monoprice 18515, Koss KSC75

Preferred Music – Alt. Rock, Musicals, Electronica, Film Scores, 90s revival & electro swing, Drum n’ Bass, 80s New Wave.. kinda all over the map. Some favorites – Orbital, The Orb, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Shawn Mullins, Pentatonix, Autechre, Bjork, Danny Elfman, Primus, Nine Inch Nails, Ok Go, Michael Nesmith, Devo, Large piles of Demo Scene mod tracks.. (stopping here before this gets silly-long)

The Story – I’ve been pondering getting my first set of “real” headphones for a while now. I like the 8323’s ok, but I know they are only a stepping stone. The 18515 sound a touch better but just are not comfy for me. All the sales flying around this weekend are getting my trigger finger itchy. Particularly the Philips SHP9500S for $52, the Sennheiser HD 559 on Amazon for $100, and maybe even the Monolith M560 for $150 or Monolith M565C at $183, if planar is really worth it.. or should I be aiming more at the old standbys of the ATH-M40x for $80. So many seeming good options, little ability to test any before dropping cash…

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

Headphones can achieve most aspects of any given threshold of sound quality for cheaper than speakers.

Regarding open vs closed back, open back has a relaxed/loose quality to the sound while closed back sounds wound up/uptight. This also means open back can reproduce lower frequencies easier than closed back due to physics. Another important thing to note is that with open back headphones, you can hear outside the headphones perfectly fine, which means everyone in a certain distance from you (depending on your listening level) can hear your headphones perfectly fine too.

Regarding wireless, there’s many existing solutions to wireless transmit audio from one location to another using adapters. Depending on the solution, the quality of your headphones, and your ears, you may or may not perceive quality loss and/or latency.

Regarding using a headset on both console and PC, you can buy a 2.5mm y-splitter cable for $5 anywhere online which will allow you to do so.

Finally, regarding my product recommendation, the Sennheiser HD 559, which barely fits in your budget, and has no mic which makes this a pair headphones. Unfortunately, no reputable audio company would make a serious endeavor into targeting the $50 market with quality sound. If you want to go that low, you’re going to have to settle with Chinese sweatshop-level sound quality which ranges from merely acceptable to barely tolerable.
