So when you install a game on your Xbox it gets saved to the Xbox’s hard drive so you can keep using it. The Xbox One X has a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) inside it which uses older, spinning platter technology so the speeds games can read data from it are pretty slow compared with newer tech. Solid State Drives (SSD) are a newer tech that similarly stores data but is more like a flash drive where speeds are faster.

Now the Xbox let’s you attach additional storage devices via the USB port, and through the UI you can decide which games are stored where.

On an Xbox the only improvements you’ll see by using an external SSD for your games is you likely will see a decrease in the time it takes the game to load or swap levels, etc. Basically any time the game needs to grab new data it will be faster. It won’t upgrade any visuals or make you get better frames per second or anything like that… it will just be load times that may decrease (depends on the games)

If you are still interested, you’ll want to find an external SSD with USB 3.0 to get the best results. Example:
