With the M1’s, RAM isn’t upgradeable at all. It is on the CPU chip. As for the harddrive, the internal drive will probably blow away externals. Also, it isn’t replaceable. The internal storage on an M1 can easily do 2,800 MB/s read and write all day long. My external Sandisk Extreme Pro get around 900 MB/s. If you have a Thunderbolt 3 drive, you probably can get up 2500 range, but I don’t have one.

As for LR / PS, no idea it isn’t something that I do. But I bet it does a better job then you would expect. The M1 does a much better job at memory management and the deals a lot better with the shared graphic memory than the Intel machines. Of course, I say this with 16bg of ram and that is probably what I would suggest buying if you are planning on keeping the machine for a number of years.

I bought this one for the fast transfer rate – moving ps5 games from it to play and vice versa. Moving 60 GB back and forth sounded like it would take a while. I haven’t moved any yet so I can’t tell you if my logic has paid off.

I’ve had a good experience with a smaller version of this one:

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-2TB-Extreme-Portable-SDSSDE81-2T00-G25/dp/B08GV4YYV7/

It’s shock- and waterproof and very small, making it an ideal portable storage media. Performance is exceptional.

Format it in exFAT in order to be able to access it on all of the listed operating systems. Always format a new drive anyway, since manufacturers tend to use asinine formatting settings. Put a handful of files onto it and then test it with all of the operating systems and devices you want to use it with before filling it with data.

One more thing: Make sure to always use the included USB C cable or one that you know is an actual USB 3.0 cable. Smartphones and tablets frequently ship with USB C charging cables that only support USB 2.0 internally. Additionally, some cheaper and older phones and tablets with USB C only support up to USB 2.0 transfer speeds. This doesn’t really matter if you’re just looking at files on the SSD (e.g. photos and videos – they’ll load just fine), but it will have an impact if you’re using the Android device to transfer larger amounts of data.

It’s doable to plot on a HDD but it is a pain comparing with and SSD.

If you have to buy and external SSD the bottleneck would be the USB conection I think.

>How do you evaluate how fast an ssd is from the link you provided?

I looked into the page he linked, there’s a field that says “Transfer rate” which is 140MB/s, a good SSD nvme is around 2000~3000 MB/s.

A portable SSD isn’t cheap for example this one also has 2000MB/s but is 350$! You could get an internal SSD nvme for 1/3 of that probably.

Maybe if you have several internal HDDs that could be a better alternative?

I would recommend the internal upgrade. If that’s out of the question I really like the SanDisk Extreme Pro it’s a little expensive but super fast for an external drive and sturdy enough to take with you wherever you go.

We tether to a MacBook Pro 2018 32GB RAM, 6-core i9.

We use the 5 meter Active USB3 cable from TetherTools. It’s 5GB/s. Or you can use the TetherBoost Pro USB-C Core Controller which is 10GB/s. Then we use a 6″ adapter cable to the camera.

If you’re just using a plain USB cable, that might be the issue.

How fast is your external drive? We use Sandisk Extreme Pro 2TB 2 GB/s. Use the shortest cable possible. Ours are less than 12″.

We tether to Phase One cameras and Nikon D850’s without a problem (Capture One, and sometimes Nikon Camera Control Pro 2).

Turn off all previews in camera.

Correct, I meant 3.2 Gen 2×2, not 3.1.

Thanks for elaborating. I recall much of that from researching USB 4 specification for this product because someone couldn’t get full speeds on their M1 and I too was curious why that was the case.
