I would go with some external SSD from a reliable brand or just get a normal M.2 SSD (also from a good brand) with an external enclosure. Don’t know enough about encryption to tell you what to get there, but any decent SSD should last quite a bit longer than an external HDD, as well as being much faster. Something like this should work fine:

Thanks for the reply.

Did you consider any other options before you settled on the LaCie?

I’ve had a few people recommend this SanDisk Extreme Pro and was wondering if you’d considered it and why you chose the LaCie?

Just looking to choose the best overall, money isn’t really an issue when the files are so important

Additional FYI to everyone out there who was considering the T7 and are disappointed with its incompatibility. If you’re having issues finding the T5, the Samsung works perfectly with the BMPCC6K (can’t confirm 4K as I don’t have one). Link below

Have you found a solution to this? I was thinking of getting this today. I read on amazon somewhere the cord was the issue. But was looking to see if there were any other issues. Here is the link to the review, you might have to search “xbox” in the review search: amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-Portable-External-SDSSDE80-1T00-A25/dp/B07YFGSDQR?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1

The MacBook Air with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage fits the use case you describe.

Personally, I wouldn’t spend $999 or more on a computer and not make sure the machine has at least 16GB RAM, but you seem to be confident you’ll only use your machine for documents and Safari. In which case the only restriction is having 256GB storage, if in fact you like to keep all your photos and videos on your Mac. Personally, I have selected ‘Optimize Mac Storage’ in the Apple Photos settings, but if you prefer ‘Download Originals’ then more storage is a necessity.

Also, keep in mind that for $169 you can buy a portable 1TB SSD. So you can always opt for the 16GB Air, instead, and then just buy one of those external SSDs down the road when you need more space for storing files like your Apple Photos library. That being said you want to consider what files you’ll always need ‘on device.’ 256GB may not be enough if you need all your Apple Photos with you at all times. I doubt thats the case, and it is a cloud photo service, but all of that is for your consideration.

Thanks for the reply.

Did you consider any other options before you settled on the Western Digital?

The reason I ask is, a couple of other people have mentioned either:

1 ) This SanDisk Extreme Pro

Or

2 ) This LaCie Rugged SSD

Had you considered either of these before settling on the Western Digital?

The SanDisk in particular looks good as it claims speeds of 2000MB/s
