You might want to take a look at external nvme drives as you might actually find a better price to speed then a higher end external ssd. The native thunderbolt drives are so overpriced i wouldn’t really even consider it.

I have one of these and while I don’t run it for my boot drive I did run some vms off of it and it worked great.

Because hard drives are more cost-effective, reading speed hasnt kept up with ssds. Nowadays you can get miniature fast ssds in smaller dimensions like this external nvme bad boy saturating usb 3.2

I have the exact same concern. What i decided to do is to keep a curated selection of games and media on my device and also picked up one of these external Ssds

It’s tiny and I’m using it to store my expanded collection of content if I go on trips or something like that.

Don’t know if this is a option for you but you can always just plug an external ssd into your phone (if you have an android device). This is ofcourse not the nicest looking methode, but definitly the cheapeast and most practical.

Edit: Something like this is pretty small and should work: https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Rocket-External-Aluminum-SB-1TB-NANO-BLK/dp/B07XL6BMFP
