Yes, I built a vertical murphy bed last fall using the Create-A-Bed Deluxe Vertical Queen bed kit (this exact item on Amazon) which I believe is identical to what Rockler sells as the “frameless” murphy bed kit.

It was a big project but didn’t have any major surprises; making sure that the plywood face pieces were cut perfectly square and the edges perfectly straight was honestly the hardest part (since they are so large). Moving the completed bed unit was no easy task, either, as it’s basically made of like 6 pieces of heavy plywood and weighs a ton.

The quality is absolutely top notch. I built built-in shelves around the unit on the wall (erm, honey, I’m almost done building them… any day now…) and the bed works great. When you grab the handles on the front and pull down there is initially some resistance – it’s clear that the bed would NEVER “fall over” unexpectedly – and then it just gracefully glides down to the floor.

We use it as a guest bed but I slept on it to test it out and you’d never know that you weren’t on a normal bed – if you follow the kit instructions, the bed has zero “bounce” to it and sits properly on the floor.

When you go to close it, you just lift it up slightly and it will basically close itself thanks to the gas struts (although you will want to hold it just to prevent it from slamming, but there are rubber stops so it’s harmless if it did).

I really couldn’t be happier with the kit. It took me considerably longer to build than I expected, just due to the large size and the amount of plywood that it needs, but it turned out great and I would happily build a second kit.

Feel free to ask any questions and I’m happy to answer them

Thank you. Except for the inside support frame which was 1×3 pine, all of it is maple. The size is a standard full size bed. I used this kit for the hardware. I got the handles from IKEA and used chalk paint on the outer surfaces and lacquer on the inside.

We have one! We live in a 700sq ft 2 bed apartment and we put the Murphy bed in 3 years ago when I started working from home. My office is also the guest room. We bought one of the kits that provides all the instructions and hardware and cut the wood ourselves.

A couple of notes:
It def did not destroy the wall.
It has changed the way we use the space, in such a positive way.
The precision of the cuts was REALLY important.
And having enough space to cut, and assemble the bed was a challenge.
The legs provided in the kit are garbage- we don’t use them- we made alternatives

10/10 we would build and use a Murphy bed again. It is so convenient. Since we did it our friends and family have done the same. This is the kit we used (I think): Murphy bed

I recently built a murphy bed and would recommend that you use a kit that has the end legs like this (https://www.amazon.com/Queen-Size-Deluxe-Murphy-Bed-Vertical/dp/B00CYPV29W). I did not and it is a lot more work and does not look as nice.

For the color i recently built a vanity with solid birch and also have cabinets that are birch. It tends to have knots and it’s natural finished look is very similar to hickory so getting a clean look like this with solid birch rail and stiles might be tough. You could probably get some cherry plywood and some Cherry stick on edge banding and that would provide you with the look from the picture.

My parents who are in their 60s with little wood working experience just built one using this kit. It takes a bit of time but it turned out great! Kit comes with a detailed instructional video and all the hardware needed for the bed, all you need to supply is the wood and paint.

If you didn’t already know, Amazon has Murphy bed kits.

You can make it look expensive with nice plywood and handles.

Thank you. Yes it’s anchored to the wall because the pistons are very strong and the whole thing would fall forward if not anchored when pulling it down. (hardware) In the instructions, these are recommended if you can’t anchor to a stud. I was able to anchor to three studs using 3” wood screws on the top so the damage to the wall is minimal and easy to fix.
