OK final question, thanks again for being so generous with your time.

I bought one of these, i copy mkv’s to it and plug it into the USB port on my LGCX, can I expect to do the same with the shield pro offline, i.e. meaning no internet access enabled?

The Wii U’s ports operate at .5 amps, by using a y cable you can at most 1 amp at 5 volts (USB 2.0 spec), and get 5 watts. Most laptops (2.5″ HDDs) will consume between .4 and .8 amps, allow the Y cable to work. However, because initial spin-up may exceed even the 1.0 amp for the first few milliseconds in some drives, this will cause it to fail when underpowered. So either get a low powered laptop HDD such as western digital blue or move to non-NVME flash storage.

If you have not purchased your external HDD my suggestion is to get a PNY 480gb USB 3 SSD, that goes for around 50 dollars on amazon. While you can find a “faster” external SSD, you will be limited by the speed limit of USB 2.0 (around 60 megabytes per second without accounting for overhead).

Note that the cable you have selected (I purchased a similar one), is for USB 3.0 the only reason to get this is if your drive is USB3.0 and has a micro USB3 port.

Good luck.

Yeah, if you pick up an USB SSD drive of any kind, you will be impressed by the difference in performance, and the longetivity will be much better as well.

When I used to travel a lot, I would use this one, but it was very important to me that it be compact. If that’s not an issue for you, then you might opt for a larger one, like this or one of the competing products.

I just got this ssd. Super cheap and low power requirements. Powers through a single wii u usb port, so no y cable or individual power supply
