Sheets of plastic are waterproof. However, cloth pads with plastic attached cannot be put into a dryer–the heat will melt or damage the plastic.
What I used with my kids was a sheet of plastic. It had no cloth connected to it. The plastic sheet was placed under the usual, non-waterproof mattress pad. The mattress pad and sheets can be washed in a washing machine and dried. The plastic sheet can be wiped with a towel or washed and then dried by hanging.
Since my kids got older and I bought a new, expensive mattress for my bed I began to fear spilling coffee or something on it. So, at the suggestion of the store, I bought a plastic (with no cloth) mattress protector. I think this is like it–pure plastic, no cloth. The mattress pad and sheets were over the protector.
Not long after I bought it I turned over a large mug of coffee; none seeped through.
My husband travels, and I have been afraid of bedbugs. (expensive business-type hotels are generally the worst for them, I am told). The mattress protector also protects against bed bugs. If I get them I can place all of the bed linen in the wash and dryer.
