These may not be exactly what you’re looking for but figured I’d toss this in for your consideration because these have been fantastic for me over the past year or so. Plantronics BackBeat Fit.
Surprisingly good sound quality, better than the standard Apple ones. Solid bass.
I’m not a huge fan of the ones that go all the way in your ear. These wrap around and are very comfortable for just sitting around or while working out.

I’m on my second pair of Plantronics Backbeat Fit. First pair made it 2 years, my current pair on going on 2 years old.
My personal preference is Over The Ear. They are not noise-cancelling. Wife has a pair of Jaybirds, and I can’t get those to stay in my ears

That’s nice of you. Is he really critical of sound quality, or are you mainly looking for something that will do the trick from a build quality and ergonomic standpoint?
Since you mentioned the stress of the wires and the fact that his tick makes him inadvertently a little rough headphones, I might consider some bluetooth workout pairs. They are not necessarily the gold standard of audio quality, but they tend to be built a little more rugged, and the wireless option would make them less likely to get tangled. This of course depends on if he’s listening with devices have bluetooth. The other thing to consider is that these can be hit and miss from a fit standpoint, which is part of why you’ll see such spotty user reviews.
I’ve had these for a long time and they take a beating, but I’m sure there are many other good options out there.

I have these headphones: BackBeat Fit
I can’t say enough good about them. The sound quality and battery life is quite good. You can carry on a normal conversation while wearing them, and most people I call with them can’t tell I’m using them. The sound quality doesn’t rival large headphones, but they’re the best earbud style headphones I’ve ever tried. If you’re considering a bluetooth option, they’re worth a try.
FYI: Costco has them for less than Amazon.

I love my Plantronics BackBeat Fits: https://www.amazon.com/Plantronics-BackBeat-Fit-Bluetooth-Headphones/dp/B01I0VIMK0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473504060&sr=8-1&keywords=backbeat+fits
These are lightweight, fit very securely and comfortably, but the best thing about them is that they allow some ambient noise in so I can still be aware of surroundings, i.e. hear cars or other runners.

I have the same exact issue as you. The only pair of headphones that’s ever worked for me are these. I couldn’t recommend them more!
