Here’s an idea: Why not get a pair of earphones, AND a pair of headphones? I know. Mind blown.
For earphones, I would get either the Moondrop Quarks, Blon Bl-03, or the Tin Hifi T2. Don’t be turned off by the low price of these, as they are all very competent IEMs.
For gaming headphones, I would get the Philips SHP9600 with a Vmoda Boom Pro, or save a bit more, and get the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 ohm.

SHP9600 + Modular mic combo for $177 is an easy recommendation.
That type of connection point is actually not hard to find at all. It’s pretty common. There are lots of other options if you have more specific requirements.

SHP9600 + mic
Open back though, so they don’t have noise cancellation. But great audio for music. Soundstage is a bonus for gaming.

> just looking for a comfy light open backed headset
They certainly fit that criteria. They’re a good option for their price.
They’re not perfect though. They can actually fit too loosely for people who are petite or have smaller heads. Some people think they’re a bit light on bass – that may or may not matter to you.
A couple of other options in a similar price range include the SHP9600, Fidelio L2, the big brother X2HR, and the Sivga SV007.

or
are a couple of excellent and easy to use open-back options to start with. Either will run well right off of your pc or laptop or console or whatever you’re using. If you have any questions, about the sound or the comfort or whatever.. feel free to ask.

Since you’re open to either open or closed backs, here are a couple of good options within your budget:
SHP9600 – comes with a modular mic, and note the $30 applicable coupon.
Fidelio L2 – again, mic included and with a coupon.
Fidelio X2HR – same, same.
Sivga SV007 – also works with modular 3.5mm mics like the one noted previously or the VModa BoomPro.
