I use something similar to this when I used to shave everything clean off.
I simply run the trimmer against the grain of the hair and it left me with a nice level of stubble. My hair also grows extremely fast, so I could tolerate one day of a little too close of a shave in order to have that stubble look the next.
The one I have is old and not sold anymore, but it is a Philips Norelco.

You won’t get a clean shave but I use this
It’s the only thing I’ve used that doesn’t make my face feel weird after using it

I use this one, pretty cheap too
but yeah basically you want it to be even all around your face and then actually trim it UP (not a close shave/no-guard, use like a #1 guard) from the bottom of your neck to about midway between the top of your adam’s apple to your chin
and you have to keep it trimmed with a guard that you think looks nice, a #3 is pretty long but it looks fine, not homeless. I let my beard grow for 3 months and I got so many homeless comments that my family forced me to shave it off.

I got one of those beard trimmers with the adjustable guard so you can choose the length of the hair that’s left. Let’s you do a nice, easy buzz cut. Way better than shaving imho.
Edit: This one

I have been using this one for a couple of years now and it is working great! I had a similar one before this (same model but without the twisty length selector) which lasted me about 6 years. The old one still works but the length selector is worn and it became too easy to make a short patch in my beard. If it works for your bearding needs, i would highly recommend this.
