Always come to the subreddit for the consumer items you want and get the gist of what people like for the thing you’re in need of before you purchase things. You can get a lot better for the same price if you look past the ultra popular on shelf options and just assume it’s dog shit, you usually want the “You’ve probably never heard of it” options.

I’ve been interested in these headphones since from what I’ve heard, they are a relative to the SHP9500’s – Openbacks that are prettier, sturdier, with more bass. But have less treble, are heavier, and obviously more expensive.
Sadly I’m broke right now due to moving, so I will have to wait.
·
I’d recommend the fidelio X2 (btw, they’re £100 on amazon rn) and a v-moda boom pro mic for £30. The X2 are a LOT of fun single player gaming.
Be aware that you probably want to have a quiet pc and/or adjust your fan curves to keep noise to a minimum when using open backs.
·
None of these are considered basshead headphones.
For an open headphone, look into the Philips X2HR. It has some extra mid-bass emphasis and a very big soundstage. They are also fairly easy to drive and generally do not require an external headphone amp.
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
Amazon has free returns for them, which means free return shipping if you don’t like them. So worth giving them a shot
·
Thanks for the input! Is this the X2HR you reference? The price point kind of surprised me. You mention the E-MU Teak, which another poster did too. Have you used these? If so, how would you rank them vs the X2HR. I was definitely interested in trying out something open backed, but if the Teak will be better I’d opt for that.
·
The X2HR are excellent for the money if you would like headphones with some extra mid bass and a big soundstage.
And they are at a very good price of $124 right now if you are in the US

Has free returns, so free return shipping if you just want to try them out.
·
I’d recommend the Philips Fidelio X2HR. I use them with my PS4 with a Modmic wireless and FiiO BTR 3 with a Creative bluetooth USB for a fully wireless setup. If your okay with wired though you can just buy a cheap mic and plug it into your headphones and then into the controller.
The Philips are comfortable, have great bass, good soundstage and a lot of people use them for gaming.
$144 new on amazon or used like new for $101.

·
Have a look into the Philips Fidelio X2HR. Pretty cheap and great sound for that price. Some say they are pretty good on bass. I have them, but the clamp force on my head is too much. So i went to the X3 version which is more balanced (also more expensive).

So … this is a killer deal and i’m gonna do some shilling now: https://www.amazon.it/dp/B01N5VHLUG
Pros:
detachable cable, great build quality, no amp needed, great sound signature, good-ish clarity. i’ve gone through a few different headphones recently and these were the ones with the most enjoyable sound for me. i wanted em for movies too and they were amazing for that.
Downsides:
they have bass and it if you don’t like it, it could be too much. but they also do not have more than the m40x i think.
weight: they’re kinda heavy and some (me) are bothered by that. other than that theyre comfortable af. this was the biggest downside for me.
i’d heavily rec at least trying them, because sub 100 is great and 75 (if used) is amazing. if you don’t like the sound or weight, you can send em back. in about 6 hours they will revert back to 135ish i think.

I was looking at beyerdynamic shit but went with these and they are far and away the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever worn. Sound great as well but i’m not some audiophile
·
Highly recommend the Phillips fidelio x2hr!
They’re open back over ear headphones; quite large and should be used indoors only as they let sound in but they are luminous for listening to classical. Super comfortable could literally leave them on all day though the outside of the cups gathers lint quite easily.
·
>Wireless earbuds would work.
My issue is ear buds are usually a no go for me as I have very small ear canals and they end up hurting rather quickly. Even with the smallest size rubber grommets.
>Some people buy the HTC Vive audio strap with 3d printed mounts but I got mine to be comfortably set
Saw that and was thinking about it as a I have an old Vive with the audio strap somewhere around here. As well as a Vive Pro but, I am not sure those speakers can be put on it.
>but I got mine to be comfortably set
What headphones do you have? I use Philips X2HRs. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5VHLUG
·
Just a heads up to fellow audio lovers.
Philip’s x2hr is on sale for about 117$ on Amazon right now.
Im not affiliated at all, just saw an awesome deal on a great pair of open backs.
·
I have had the hyperx cloud 2 for a while now, considering i still like it and wanted better mic quality, i was wondering if the vmoda boompro is compatible with it, or are there better modmics to choose instead?
But if there wasnt a better mic choice for the cloud 2 I was considering on just getting the Philips Fidelio X2HR.
I Heard its quiet good when paired with a modmic but im not too well informed when it comes to them so here i am
·
Awesome! Seems like a solid set–can you confirm this is the right product? Seem to be a lot of options. Looks like its $120?
Thanks to u/raistlin65 and u/thomaslux as well!
·
if you can go with open headphones, Philips X2HR has some mid-bass emphasis and a very big sound stage. Sounds awesome with electronic music

·
If you’re shopping in the US, they’re currently $149 through Amazon. That’s what I would do.
If you’re not in the US, I understand.
Back in the day, $200-$230 was their typical price, and if you could get them under $170 that was a deal. Over the past year they’ve typically been down under $150 though. The price will probably continue to rise on them again now that they’re discontinued and as inventory runs out.
·
HD58X are a good choice. I’d probably pick the Fidelio X2s over the HD58X for my use, but if you like the more neutral sound go for the HD58X. The X2s were down to $159 on Amazon a few days ago and I think they climbed up a bit but they’re still down to ~$180.
·
Yes. HD58X are probably your best choice and your budget range. These have a fairly balanced sound.
If you would like some with some a little extra bass emphasis, the Philips X2HR are very good, no headphone amp needed: https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/ You could order those from Amazon and try them. Keep the retail packaging in great shape and don’t damage them and you can return them if they don’t suit you.
·
I agree. The X2HR to be a good choice. the X2HR are currently on sale on Amazon UK https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-X2HR-Resolution-Headphones-Isolation-Black/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
I just ordered a pair for $131 shipped to Michigan.
Sennheiser HD58X special edition headphones from drop.com would be another excellent choice.
·
If you don’t own any open headphones yet, you might enjoy the Philips X2HR. There are currently on sale for $125, seemingly on closeout since the x 3 is coming out after the new year. The big soundstage can be quite enjoyable for electronic music.
Amazon has free returns on them, so a little penalty in trying them https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
·
I would recommend the Phillips fidelio x2hr if your considering spending $120 they are on sale right now at amazon
This is a fantastic price for these headphones.

i got this and the https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5VHLUG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_lD7HFbCFVE745 yesterday. I plan to return one. I am mainly looking for the sound quality and not a lot on the mic part. Anyone kmow if its comparable or one is so much better than the other?
·
The X2HR already recommended is currently on special for Prime Day for $116

·
Hello,
I’m looking for a new pair of headsets for gaming on PC, I have the HyperX Cloud and the top hurts my head, almost dented it a bit. Willing to go up to $250, maybe $300 if the quality gains are worth.
I have these ones on my target but looking for suggestions from experts 🙂
·
If you wouldn’t mind a little extra mid-bass emphasis, Philips X2HR are excellent for movie watching and casual gaming because they have a very big sound stage. A lot of people find them very comfortable
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
Note that Amazon has free return shipping on them if you decide you don’t like them. in fact, I’d strongly recommend you try them if that sounds at all attractive to you. Lot of people prefer them to HD599.
·
You aren’t going to know which one you’d like better unless you hear them both.
Get the X2HR. Amazon has them with free returns, which means free return shipping back if you don’t like them
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Audio-Fidelio-X2HR-Auriculares/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
They are also fairly easy to drive and generally do not need an amp, unlike the DT990s. So you might as well try them first.
·
If you can do open headphones, you should try the Phillips X2HR
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
They have a very big sound stage.
Amazon has free returns, which means free return shipping. No penalty to try them.
·
Hey, thanks for the response! I don’t have strong feelings on open/closed just because I haven’t spent enough time exploring either, and I have a set of closed headphones (no mic option). If I may ask two follow-up questions…
I only see the X2HR for ~150 on amazon. I might be missing something, but are these the ones you’re talking about?
I’ve never used a plug-in mic before, but am I correct in that you use the mic cable in place of the audio cable that come with the headphones, which adds a mic in-line?
Many thanks again, I really appreciate it! 🙂
·
Check out these Phillips Fidelio X2/HR (they’re $144 at Amazon right now — I paid more than twice that). Wired. Hi/Res certified. You could have a watermelon for a head and put a PSVR and glasses on top and still feel comfortable, due to the sort of ski-band style strap that it uses. It never feels like it’s pushing against your head or gets too snug; I really like the design of them.
They’re an open pair of headphones (as opposed to closed), so it’s a wider soundstage. Playing a game like “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” is a perfect way to show them off, as the binaural recording techniques they used really makes it feel like you’re hearing voices coming from in and all around your head (as opposed to just the L/R channels on your ears). Also, you don’t need to get a special headphone amp/DAC to power them as the PS4 controller is just the right amount. I absolutely love these headphones, especially as they fit comfortably over my PSVR headset. I think they’re the answer to your problem! And if not, you can always send ‘em back to Amazon.
·
Can you do open back or do you need closed back??
How about fidelio x2hr??? There is a used like new set on amazon for 93$. They are great for gaming and movies. They have a huge soundstage and great bass for an open back. I have multiple headphones and they are easily one of my favorite. They sound like a movie theatre lol.
·
I was just suggesting the Phillips Fidelio X2/HR to someone else — open back 50mm driver HiRes headphones that are on Black Friday sale for $99. I bought ‘em for $350. Super comfortable, one of the best rated and reviewed pairs out of the mid-tier range of headphones.
And you can grab a V-MODA Boom Prom flexible mic for $30, and it works as the cable between your headphones and controller/PC to add a mic to the setup when you want one. Better to have a good pair of headphones and add a mic to it, than pay extra for a “gamer headset” that overcharges for that, and gives a subpar pair of headphones as tradeoff for the mic.
·
I’d go with these for $150, they’re well-made:
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
I own them and they rock, amazing for music/bass too. I bought them a few years ago when they first came out for $300. Check the reviews. 🙂
·
First thing – while a budget is good, what you’re asking for is a bit of a no-man’s land. What I mean by that is, if you actually want so spend around $800 for a gaming headset, your options are a bit limited.
Thankfully, that means that you can very easily get away with spending less!
I’d start here: Philips Fidelio X2HR for $145 and V-Moda BoomPro for $30
This setup should be able to work directly or through cheap adapters with everything you have. No DAC or amp needed strictly for the headphones.
But more importantly, the X2HR pretty much hit that ‘gaming’ featureset of just enough detail, just enough bass, and oodles of soundstage with great imaging.
The BoomPro as well is an absolute knockout for the price, especially given how well it works with the X2HR.
What’s more, the combo is lightweight and extremely comfortable.
The only real downside is that they’re open. Crank them to immersional volume levels and people nearby will hear them, and at normal volumes you’re going to hear your surroundings.
For that, you can look at Beyerdynamic’s MMX 300 for $279, also known for comfort and quality.
·
Offerta Prime Day vera: Philips Fidelio X2HR a 99 euro. Sono cuffie straordinarie, a quel prezzo poi.
·
Maybe, but I used to have one of those and the audio quality isn’t that great. personally, I’d go for something like the Phillips x2HR with a V-Moda Boompro mic. They are open back with great soundstage and imaging, which is perfect for gaming. The only downside compared to the Razer Nari is that it isn’t wireless.
·
Poupa-te dores de cabeça.
Se queres fechados, M40x com pads angulados.
·
I was excited to get my hands on a Pulse 3D and had it for one day, before realizing it pinched my ears uncomfortably after only 20 minutes or so it was driving me crazy. They felt really cheap and plastic-y too. In case anyone else had a similar issue, I strongly recommend checking out a pair of Phillips Fidelio X2/HRs. 50mm drivers, open back design, really wide soundstage, the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever worn due to their ski goggle band design and really comfy padding for $150 currently (or the 40mm drivers for the same price as the Pulse 3D at $100). Wired, if that’s an issue.
I’m glad that Sony didn’t restrict access to the Tempest Audio Engine to only their branded headsets, like they easily could have. So at least in my opinion, I think it’s better to get a quality pair of headphones and then add something like a V-MODA BoomPro mic or an AntLion. The nice thing about the X2/HRs is that the 3.5mm cable attaches on the left ear cup, so if you accidentally step on or pull the cable and it breaks, you’re not out an expensive pair of headphones. And you can use the V-MODA to replace the cable between the headphones and the controller, which has a volume dial and mute switch and a flexible boom mic for $30 I think. I don’t mean to sound like a shill — I’ve got a fair amount of other headphones I tried and/or bought too, but this is such a good pair for not that much more than the Pulse 3Ds and it doesn’t require a special DAC or headphone amp in terms of the DualSense or XBOX controller being enough to power them.
I’m always curious what other people have found to be their favorite pair of gaming headphones. I recently picked up the Audeze Mobius (after going back and forth between them and the Audeze Penrose), but even a $400 pair still had me thinking that the $150 Fidelio X2/HR sounded just as good. /ShillUp mode off, but maybe this will help someone on the fence about buying a new pair and that would be great. Or they’ll turn me on to a new pair, and that’ll be great too. So what are you guys using?
·
·
I was choosing between those two and ended up with the Fidelio. I love them.
·
I’m using these with a short cable and I love them.

I’d try the Apple USB-C dongle before the Dragonfly Red. Better DAC, although less headphone amp power. But only cost $9 to try it.
The Dragonfly Red is generally considered very expensive for what you get in terms of performance. I’m an Android person, so not sure the best alternatives for iPhone.

The Sennheiser HD58X special edition headphones from drop.com: https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-sennheiser-hd-58x-jubilee-headphones. I believe they may give first-time buyers a $20 discount coupon. These have a very balanced sound with just a very little bit of treble and bass emphasis. They are also fairly easy to drive and typically do not need a headphone amp. Sennheiser has other headphones that are more expensive with the same headphone cup shape.
Philips X2HR have some significant bass emphasis with extra treble. The mids are a little recessed. Amazon has free return shipping on them, so if you didn’t like them, no cost to try them out https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/ref=mp_s_a_1_3 I only briefly try those on (bought my brother a pair for Christmas), so I don’t know how the comfort is with the ear over a long period.
AKG make several models of open headphones with very large cups that all use the same cup design. They are super roomy. So if you could try one on, you would then know they all fit. K7XX, Q701, K702, for example. However, all of those with that design are hard to drive and typically require that you purchase a headphone amp, too.
Then Beyerdynamic makes some open headphones. It’s been so long since I’ve tried them on, I can’t remember how the fit was around the ear.

I purchased these headphones a few days ago and they came in the original box and everything looks legit. However, I can’t shake off the feeling that I got them for a price that was too good since they cost around 300 USD in Sweden with some stores selling it for 150 USD at 50% off. However, I purchased them on Amazon for around 75 USD from “Todoro” when I thought I was buying them from Amazon (I’m an inexperienced amazon buyer). I would therefore like to know if this seller is legit or if the product could be fake. What signs should I look for if it’s fake?
Thank you for your feedback:

Highly recommend legit audiophile headphones (open back is a plus but it comes down to preference really) and an add-on boom mic. I use the Philips Fidelio X2HR and the VModa Boompro. Should run you less than about 180 USD. Really any audiophile headphones in this price bracket will be a huge upgrade for you so feel free to consider your options and find what you like best.

I would’ve originally suggested Cooler Master MH752 if you want the integrated mic but since you’ve gone through 4 paids of Hyperx headphones they’re more or less the same sounding (based on Takstars and I don’t think you want the same type of sound – or do you? –
·
>What mic and headset did you switch to if you don’t mind my asking?
If you’re looking for entry level audiophile headphones then check out. I highly recommend the Fidelio X2’s over the rest, but they are also pricier.
- Grado SR60X ($99)
- Audio-Technica M40X ($99)
- Sennheiser HD559 ($99)
- Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro ($130)
- Beyerdynamic DT990 ($130)
- Philips Fidelio X2 ($150)
I personally recommend going for open-back over the ear headphones if you’re only going to use them inside. Go for closed-back (like the M40X or DT770’s) if you live in a noisy environment or don’t want deal with sound leakage.
When it comes to microphone get something like the Antlion ModMic.

What the others said is great info. Nearly everyone loves how Sennheisers sound (used to have the 6xx and can highly recommend those) and they’re a very safe recommendation and great starter point. Only thing the Sennheisers lack IMO is bass, and if you want something heavier on that then take a look at the Fidelio X2HR. Another option would be the Hifimans.
They missed you wanting something portable though, so for the dac/amp I say you should get this Ifi.
And don’t worry if you need to have 1 ear off. That won’t break the headphones, but might be uncomfortable especially if you wear glasses (speaking from experience.) In that case, I’d recommend some IEMs.

everyone recommends these, but it sounds like shp9500’s would be good. I wear glasses and don’t have an issue with most headphones. If I do, I’ll end up stretching the headband slighly until its better.

but the philips shp9500s are very comfortable, just not very bassy and treble is considered harsh by some.
actually, i just remembered the 9600 came out, they look slightly different and are more v-shaped. (aka more bass and treble, more fun sounding, but wont have as much clarity with vocals). theyre similar to the philips x2-hr in terms of sound.

TL;DR the philips 9500, 9600 or x2-hr

I might be able to help you here. I had the G933 Artemis Spectrum headphones. They were alright — I didn’t realize at the time that I had to have them hooked to a PC in order to take advantage of the virtual surround sound, so I never got to experience that with the PS4.
I decided I would invest some money into getting a really good pair of headphones after that, but I wanted to get a unicorn… something that was good for music, movies, and games. I settled on an open back pair that had incredible reviews for the price tier. And, I spent over $300 on it just over a year ago… but you can get the same model (it’s the Philips Fidelio X2/HR) for only $122 on sale on Amazon Prime right now. I think that’s a killer deal for these, and they’re HiRes also in case you like to listen to premium, high bit rate formate stuff.
They’re incredibly comfortable and have a ski goggle style design, so you could have a head the size of a watermelon and they’d cradle on it gently. Open back, big sound stage. Great quality cable, too. They’re wired though, but I really like that they’re the kind where the jack is on the headphones themselves so if the cable ever fails you can replace it and not have to replace the whole headset. So what I did is I bought a V-Moda Boom Pro Mic that plugs directly into the headset and has a flexible boom mic and a volume dial w/ mute switch on the cable, and then you plug that into the PS4 dualshock or computer. You don’t need to buy a headphone amp/DAC to power them either, which is nice.
I wasted money buying one of the Astro A40 MixAmp Pro TR boxes so I could get the virtual Dolby surround, but I wouldn’t bother. Instead, I prefer to just run a long cable from my home theater amp/receiver’s headphone out, since that’s basically one huge amp/DAC anyway, and you can drive these things up to some serious volume. You also get a much better quality sound with them and the mic combo, versus buying a gaming headset (where they jack up the price quite a bit).
If you’re looking for a wireless option, you could check out the Steel Series Arctic Pro — that link is for the one with the game DAC with DTS Headphone X and you can use it on the PC and PS4 (for $199), or the wireless version for $315. I’ve heard a lot of people say these are pretty good but I’ve not heard them myself. If you’re looking for something cheaper, maybe the HyperX Cloud for $100ish.
I recently picked up a pair of in ear buds also — the 1MORE E1010 Quad Driver for $170 that come with a little Fiio A1 headphone amp. They’re pretty nice so far, I’ve been playing “Death Stranding” with them.
I’d check out /r/headphones and you could also read the sidebar over at /r/headphoneadvice and make a post detailing the exact setup and price range and what you’re looking for and have people make recommendations. Also in the sidebar there are some popular model headphones, amps, and mics. I think most people will tell you that buying a good pair of headphones and adding the mic is better (either the VModa BoomPro or there’s another that sticks to the side of the cup like a magnet for the same-ish price). You’ll get better sound than a gaming headset, and more for the money. And you can use those savings to buy a headphone amp/DAC if you want also, which will boost the volume and bass and maybe even give you virtual surround if that’s something you feel like you really need.
I know this is long, but I figured since I was familiar with what you’d used previously (the G933s) and was on a similar hunt not so long ago, I’d share my findings with you. If you find a great set and you happen to remember, hit me up and let me know what you grabbed so I can maybe try to demo them somewhere for myself. And if you do buy the Phillips Fidelio X2/HRs from Amazon, you could always listen to them a bit and send them back if they’re not for you. But I think you’ll be pretty impressed. I definitely was, at twice the price they’re going for now. Good luck!
·
I’ve been using a pair of Phillips Fidelio X2/HR Open Back Headphones that I bought for over $300 but they’re only $122 on Amazon right now. Definitely worth it at twice that price. And I bought a $30 V-MODA Boom Pro Mic that has a flexible boom mic, volume dial, and mute button and acts as the cable that runs between the headphones and the controller. Sounds phenomenal, especially with Dolby Atmos for Headphone.
Check out /r/headphoneadvice and /r/headphones if you want to go down the rabbit hole, but I think most will tell you it’s better to invest more money in a good pair of headphones first (with a mic like I linked) rather than spending more on a gaming headset which tends to skimp on the quality and up the price. Good luck!

99€ for the X2 on French Amazon:
·
X2HR are $100 https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
Bigger soundstage on the X2HR, which many people find more engaging. Bass will be a bit tighter on the DT770, but the X2HR are no slouch.
Those X2HR currently have free returns, which means Amazon pays return shipping if you don’t like them. Order them and see what you think.

I mostly use phillips fidelio x2 or shp9500s with a mixamp tr and a vmoda boompro. Shp9500 for competitive fps stuff and the x2 for everything else. I’ve tried a bunch and settled on these in large parts due to how well they work with the mixamp. The mixamp gives you the best functionality for chat and what not for ps4. I’ve tried “better” setups like the g6 but it sucks for console. The phillips headphones are both easy to drive and have a detachable 3.5mm cable which makes for easy pairing with the vmoda boompro. I had the gen 3 a50 and can tell you that the phillips are night and day better sounding while being way cheaper. I’ll link it all for ya if you’re curious
Phillips x2hr on super sale. have been as high as like 300$
Phillips shp9500 super sale as well.
Brand new it’s about 300 for it all but you can also get the gen 3 mixamp which sounds identical for about 60$ on ebay and you could just get one set of headphones I’d probably want the x2 unless you only play call of duty or rainbow six or something. So you could probably get it all for 210$
Mixamp tr-60$ on ebay
Fideliox2hr-120$ on amazon.
Vmoda boompro-30$ on amazon
(Optional) shp9500-60$ on amazon
There are better setups for pc or if you don’t need good chat features like balance and sidetone but for console and party chatting this is about as good as it gets. I’ve tried a ton. Good luck!!

Did you try r/HeadphoneAdvice?
I will tell you now that the HD58X are a top pick. That’s what I’d recommend for most people to try that are looking for a balanced sound without much bass and treble emphasis. Also, because it does not require a headphone amp. Some of the other good headphones in your budget range do.
If you want extra bass emphasis, go with the Philips X2HR instead: https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/ . Also easy to drive. Amazon has free return shipping on that item, so cost nothing to try it other than you might miss out on the HD58X deal.

What I’ve been using is just taking real headphones (spend as much as comfortable I’ve been using these and they are great)
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
And then getting a mic for them
https://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPro-Microphone-Gaming-Communication/dp/B00BJ17WKK/
Sounds amazing, super comfy, and the same price as a high end headset. (Do have to plug it into the controller though).
Used to have to get a steel series replaced every few months and got sick of it.

Does seem like the Ikko might be fairly bass heavy with elevated treble. You might like the Philips X2HR
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
Note that Amazon has free returns on them, which means free return shipping. I’d suggest getting them seeing what you think. If you don’t like them, take note of what you don’t like regarding the bass, mids, treble, and comfort.
They’re not very difficult to drive. They even do fairly well on my Samsung S9+ phone. So you wouldn’t need anything special for amp/DAC to try them out.
If you decided to keep them, you could get a Tempotec Sonata HD Pro for $40 off Amazon. It will easily drive them to loud volumes with crystal clear sound.
https://www.amazon.com/TempoTec-Sonata-HD-PRO-Android/dp/B084YX4MZD/
Sounds just as good as my $250 desktop DAC/AMP with my easier to drive headphones.

I wish Sony had allowed Dolby Atmos on their platform — I’m really impressed by Dolby Atmos for Headphones on the XB1X. Personally I recommend getting a really good pair of regular (non-gaming) headphones and then buying something like a V-MODA BoomPro Mic for $30. It basically replaces the headphone cable and runs between them and your controller, with a flexible mic, volume dial, and mute switch. Gamer brand headphones tend to throw in a garbage mic and jack up the price and you end up getting lesser quality headphones and mic as a result because you’re paying for Turtle Beach branding or whatever.
There are some out there that will come with virtual surround sound, but keep in mind that they might not necessarily run on the PS4. For example, I had some Logitech G933s that have a little USB adapter you plug in to make them wireless, but you have to run them on PC in order to get virtual surround sound (via an app). The PS5 is investing quite a bit into sound with it’s Tempest audio engine, and they’re focused on headphones first — so I think it’s probably better to spend whatever your budget is (on the high end) and get a really great pair of headphones that you’ll want to keep for years on end.
You’ll want to decide whether you want closed or open back headphones. Closed will have a bigger bass response generally, while open have a much more natural and open wide soundstage that makes the sounds feel as though they’re coming from around you and not just in the two little drivers pushed against your ears. I was looking for a unicorn; a great pair to wear for music, movies, and games, and ended up buying these Phillips Fidelio X2/HRs for over $300 but they’re down to $144 now. They’re wired, but come with a super long cable. Extremely comfortable. Clever design on the band that would fit even a huge watermelon head — I wear them over my PSVR for example. HiRes also. And work perfectly with the V-MODA BoomPro mic.
They don’t have any kind of virtual surround sound, but come next generation I’d imagine that you’d be glad you got just a really strong pair of headphones and let the PS5 hardware do the work over a cheap VSS solution. It’s tough with COVID19 that you can’t go out and try a pair anywhere, but if you order from Amazon you can always return them. Check out /r/HeadphoneAdvice and look at their sidebar for recommendations and the posting format in order to let people know specifically what you’re looking for. Good luck!

If you would like another fun headphone, try the Philips X2HR. https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/ It has some extra bass emphasis, and a lot of people like it for gaming. Easy to drive (works well on my Samsung S9+ phone). Amazon has free shipping on returns for it, so worth giving it a shot.

I would suggest you get the Phillips Fidelio X2HR . .
Amazon about $120.00 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5VHLUG/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_PJ1eEbAV6M6MJ
Great all around
Here is a great review .. FYI the only difference between the X2 and X2HR is now Earpads replaceable and a slightly different finish.

Get these and add a microphone.
·
The M40x’s and M50x’s have a proprietary 2.5mm jack so the V-Moda Boom Pro won’t work. Otherwise, they sound great and I use them for Rainbow Six: Siege and have no problems hearing everything. The DT770’s don’t have a detachable cable.
I would recommend a pair of Fidelio X2HR’s. They have a detachable cable so the V-Moda mic connects to them. They are open-backed headphones with a pretty good soundstage from what I’ve heard and you won’t need an AMP for them. I personally just use my M40x’s and got a Blue Yeti microphone to use for games, so that’s something else you could consider although it might cost more.
Edit: I just wanted to add that the M40x’s sounding “better” than the M50x’s is pretty subjective. The M40x’s are flatter than the M50x’s while the M50x’s have more pronounced bass and higher trebles then the M40x’s I think. They’re both solid headphones that I would recommend to just about anybody though. If you get a pair of M40x’s or M50x’s get a pair of aftermarket memory foam pads like these Brainwavz earpads. They are a 1000% more comfortable than the stock pads.

Why not start with a headphone that is competitive for headphones <$200 that most people think are excellent, but happens to be on sale for $100? There are two of them. X2HR and HD599
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RFNZYJZ/
Both of those are open headphones, which will give you a much bigger soundstage than you are used to. I think both are improved in overall SQ over the 7506. The X2HR has some bass emphasis. The HD599 is more balanced. Both have better SQ than the WH1000XM3, IMO. And best of all, both have free returns, so Amazon pays return shipping if you don’t like them. In fact, you could order them both and keep the one that sounds better.
·
HD6XX is not going to give you more bass.
Fantastic deal right now on the Philips X2HR for $115: https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
These have significant bass emphasis. Amazon has free shipping on returns listed for that item, so no penalty to try them out.
·
X2 is 119eur on Amazon.de.
https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01N5VHLUG
It is labelled under BF deals but the price has been the same for a week now.
·
The headphones you like would be considered basshead headphones. For closed headphones with a lot of bass, check the different Fostex TR-X00 models on drop.com. The different models have varying degrees of bass, but I can’t tell you which are best. Research here: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/massdrop-x-fostex-tr-x00-headphones.886076/
DT1990 do have some bass emphasis. Not neutral.
If you want to just have some fun with a set of open headphones, I suggest jumping on the Philips X2HR deal on Amazon for $120. These have some bass emphasis, have a very good sound that should be a very good improvement over your Sonys. I think they have free returns, so no penalty for trying.

For EU people outside UK it should be cheaper on amazon.de (119e at time of posting).

Phillips SHP9500 are open headphones. Not good for public usage as they leak sound in and out. Bass is rolled off. Expect them to sound more like bookshelf speakers in terms of bass extension, if that matters. For open headphones with some bass emphasis, the Philips X2HR are currently an incredible deal: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-X2HR-Resolution-Headphones-Isolation-Black/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
MDR-7506 are built like tanks. Very durable headphones that were created for use in the audio industry in tv and movie soundstages. The coiled headphone cable can be annoying.
If you like a very neutral sound, you might consider AKG K361. https://www.amazon.co.uk/AKG-K361-Closed-Foldable-Headphones/dp/B07T5V699K/r
If on ear are OK (and they will be more portable than most over ear), the Momentum 2.0 over ear are a very good deal: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Momentum-2-0-Ear-Headphones-black/dp/B00TKH177E/

The Fidelio X2HR is 30Ω. The Fidelio L2 is 16Ω. The Grado SR125se is 32Ω. The Monolith M560 is 42Ω. The AT WS1100is is 38Ω.
Those are just some open and semi-open examples since the two you mentioned are open-back. There are plenty of good closed-back headphones with relatively low impedance as well. If you’re having a hard time finding headphones that meet your criteria, I suspect it’s because you’re simply not looking very hard.
·
The X2HR are very good
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-X2HR-Resolution-Headphones-Isolation-Black/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
The newer X3 version is coming out in October
·
SHP9500 ‘s are an excellent budget starter open-back. I’ll pretty much leave it at that, though they may leave you itching for something just a bit more on the low end to satisfy that basshead side of you. You could take care of that yourself if you’re comfortable using an equalizer.
Other options you could consider are the:
Fidelio X2HR which I think are a great all-rounder and an easy decision at that price.
or
Monolith M560. You’d want to add these pads because the stock pads on the M560 suck. But it’s a planar magnetic driver which is great for detail texture and speed if you listen to alot of rock like AC/DC with crunchy guitars and fast drums and supporting bass riffs. It’s also a very well-built headphone, very comfortable once you do that pad change, and another excellent value at the price.
All of these headphones I own myself and would be just fine running straight from your motherboard giving you plenty of time to research considerations for an upgraded amp and/or dac if you still want to pursue one. And since it sounds like you’re already on track for a motherboard upgrade, there are some pretty decent implementations using quality dac’s and independent front/rear op-amps to tide you over.

X2 HRs are $179 currently on Amazon.
Same as the vanilla X2s, just with a slightly different finish and slightly different earpads.

The HD599 will give you a little better midbass boost for EDM. For gaming, I think you’d have to listen to both to decide which is better.
I’d say that HD58X give you 98% of the HD660S sound. If you’d already heard the HD58X, and knew that you loved them, then you might want to try the HD660S. However, a lot of people would not like them for EDM as the sub bass is subdued.
Given that you like EDM, Philips X2HR might be more fun because they have a good bit of mid-bass emphasis and a big sound stage. They’re also fairly easy to drive and would work well with your new amp. Amazon has free returns on them, which means free shipping to send them back. So you could try them for free https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
·
In case this helps, the X2HR are currently on sale on Amazon UK https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-X2HR-Resolution-Headphones-Isolation-Black/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
I just ordered a pair for $131 shipped to Michigan.
The x2hr are an open headphone. So they will have a larger soundstage. Because they are open, they also will not isolate well and are not good for public use because they leak sound.
