I have the OXO Cold Brew system. I really like it. I used to use a mason jar and it’s functional, but more messy. I am super happy I got it. I bought mine at Marshals for $30 but I think they are $50 on amazon. Found it
It comes with a steel mesh filter and a few paper filters. I have been re-using the paper filters so they last longer. So far they have held up quite well.

I use this cold brew method. It has a metal screen filter + a paper filter. Previously all my beans came from Peet’s and I just asked for a coarse ground. I typically do room temp at 12-14hrs. What would you suggest for this? Also I heard its good to have it on as i change the setting, is this correct?
I’ve never tried steeping it in the fridge or nearly that long. Does a cold steep have a big effect?

The filter needs to survive a long soaking and then strain the coffee without clogging or tearing with no structural support. You might be able to rig up a system to filter through cloth or a paper-covered mesh, but the Toddy is designed to be used with those filters, and they aren’t terribly expensive. If you want something that can easily be used with disposable paper filters, the Oxo Good Grips cold brew maker is a much better choice.

I use the OXO Good Grips 32 Ounce Cold Brew Coffee Maker (note, this is not an affiliate link). I find that I have no problem fitting 12oz grounds and 48oz water in it.
If you cannot fit 12oz grounds in your jar, you should be able to use the ratio of 4 water fluid ounces to 1 coffee grounds weight ounce and then brew for 24 hours.

Example Q&A:
What is the size of the decanter – what is the maximum amount that can be cold-berwed at one time?
Answer: While not totally responsive to your question, here is some helpful information. The decanter is 5.75 in. tall. With the stopper (that you can use to measure the standard 2 oz. of concentrate) it is 6.75 in. tall. The neck of the decanter, where you hold it to pour, is about 11 in. around. I have small hands and have … see more

First you pour in 8 oz. this will be absorbed by the freshly grind coffee. Then you pour in 32 oz more. You will get about 32 oz after 12 hours of brewing. I get a little less (30 oz) of concentrated coffee. The decanter is marked 32 oz. Some people re-use the used coffee grinds for a second brew. I use 4 oz of concent… see more

The others are correct: the decanter can hold 32 oz of concentrate.
The tank that contains the grounds and water (which eventually deposits the concentrate into the decanter) can hold 64 oz of water, in the absence of coffee grounds, so there is some room for additional water above the recommended 40 oz, if wanted.

32 oz
The maximum amount that it brews is 4 cups. It makes great cold coffee.

I use this and love it. Makes delicious coffee and I had never done cold brew before I got it so I appreciated the fact this system walked me through the process :

I’d recommend checking out the Oxo cold brew maker (https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Coffee-Maker/dp/B00JVSVM36/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471013852&sr=8-1&keywords=oxo+cold+brew) It works beautifully, and makes it super simple (plus it gives you the brewing instructions).
I got mine from Home Goods for $30 (they just happened to have 4 on the shelf earlier this year, but haven’t seen them since.) You can also pick it up at Kohls.com and use a coupon to save a little bit.
Also… I don’t think that the Christmas Blend is gonna taste very good. A) it’s probably expired and B) that type of blend won’t taste the best. Look for a roast that has some some sweetness to it (Costa Rican/Guatemalan)

I make it because the taste is smoother and I can make one batch over the weekend for iced coffees for the whole week. It’s also stronger so the ice melting in it isn’t such a big deal.
I use this coffee maker, but $50 is a bit steep for it.

my friend and I also have been using this, which works really well and has a smaller countertop footprint http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JVSVM36/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687682&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00K8881QO&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1TDPA9XHZJYCKTBJ6FFK

This OXO Cold Brew system is probably the easiest and safest method for making very smooth coffee concentrate.
·
Certainly! I’m using the OXO Good Grips 32oz Cold Brew system, and I use a rinsed AeroPress filter on top of their mesh filter.

Now, see…THAT looks crazy…
I was just going to get one of these…

So I was using this Oxo cold brew maker which is really good, and it’s especially great because it makes a lot of coffee.
But I got this Oxo cold brew maker and while slightly smaller (which is a benefit in its own right) it is mechanically much better and has several improvements. It’s really got the superior design and solved pretty much all my issues with the previous one
It makes less, but honestly the smaller one is just easier to clean and so it’s not a huge loss to make coffee slightly more often. Highly recommend

Yeah this is the cold brew maker that my wife uses. I think she mostly has it for the summer when it’s hot outsite.

If I was going to use one of the OXO concentrate makers, are these two the same except for size that it can brew?

I used to use the same method for my cold brew, but I got tired of the extra steps for cleanup and filtration. After looking around, I went with the Oxo Cold Brew System. It’s made surprisingly good cold brew and it’s easy to scale up or down in terms of brew volume. I take their videos with a little grain of salt, but Seattle Coffee Gear did run a blind taste test on a number of different cold brew systems. Worth a watch.
