I know where you are coming from. I use a drip with store bought coffee first thing for cup 1 at 4am, and the Chemex for mid morning and early afternoon specialty grinds.

For years I’ve just used a cheap Black and Decker drip machine and store bought Peet’s coffee (Alma de la Tierra, which can be hard to find) for the first cup of the day. Two heaping tablespoons and 400g water (12 fluid oz?) makes a good cup from a dark roast.

It died recently and so began the quest for something that could make 1-2 coffee cups (12-24 fl oz US) acceptably. I’ve bought 2 Bonavita’s (the one with the glass carafe and the one with the thermal carafe). The one with the thermal carafe excels at large 8 cup brews but it’s awful with smaller servings. The one with the glass carafe made an “acceptable” smaller serving but it mysteriously died as well and there is NO tech support.

I recently purchased an OXO coffee maker https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H9G93WK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 specifically due to it’s “2-4” cup brew option (a special insert, smaller filter, and different water pulse rate). One cup is 5 oz so for a single cup I brew 2.5. They’ve been great with the Peet’s. So far, I’ve been too tired/lazy at 4am to pick and grind one of my beans in the cupboard (I rotate through 3). But I will eventually.

It’s a pricey thing but in my hands has been near perfect for what I want.

That said, the Chemex (the smaller 2-3 cup Classic) is the f***ing bomb! Perfect coffee every time.

Good luck, sir…
