It is scary, I totally understand your anxiety. Hang in there, hope you are able to get through it with as much ease as possible. Since your rheum suggested a soft collar, I’ll share my favorite soft collar—I have probably bought most of the options on Amazon. Sometimes you have to try a few to see which is most comfortable. I’ve just started using a soft foam cervical collar and I like it better than my chinstrap. I can still move my neck but it pushes up on my chin enough to keep my mouth closed.

Chin straps kind of pull my jaw back and the c-collar doesn’t do this and it’s more comfortable.
