It’s not dumb but you would absolutely need to line it with plastic or it will soak through. I have one of the litter maids you mentioned and it works okay, but my husband and I have 6 cats and 5 foster cats so it doesn’t solve the issue of dealing with litter boxes for us.
However, I did find a solution that—no exaggeration—has changed our lives. We got a few of these

And we loved them so much that we asked for more for Christmas and now have a small army of these. It used to take so long to scoop all 8 of the litter boxes and we have to do it everyday. But now, it takes literally 5 minutes. The covered box also controls odor well.
So long story short: definitely not a dumb idea, just use a plastic liner. And this is something I have found that works well in case you want to try something else

Omega Paw Litter Box I never had cats as an adult because I hate cleaning the litter box, when I found this it was a game changer. I’ve had cats now for a couple of years and this litter box makes cleaning the litter box so easy. If anyone has a cat or is thinking about getting a cat, I can’t recommend it enough.

Another thing that I’ve found that I really like on Amazon is Brother’s brand Simthreads and now won’t use any other brand for my paper embroidery cards.
