Take a look at NHT’s SuperZero 2.1 Mini Monitors to me, one of the best speakers money can buy, and for their performance, a true bargain. I own six of them, two in my 2.1 home office setup and four as surrounds in my home theater, and adore them.

I suggest the NHT SuperZero 2.1. Amazing mini monitor, I own six of them, two on my 2.1 desktop setup and four as surrounds on my home theater.

I have installed 4 NHT Superzero 2.1 speakers as surrounds on my 7.2 system. They do not go that low, but are really, really good speakers. They are selling for $63.43 ea. at Amazon. LINK

I tend to like jomartz’s idea on the Super Zero which in my collection, has the best imaging and sound stage properties given their small baffles. As they make no real bass, the fact that you already have a sub will round them out to full range. These are very good speakers and have been since introduced in ’93 I believe. The Super Ones are just as good but too big and heavy for your needs.
Super Zero here.

Take a look at the NHT Super Zero. I did a 5.1 setup with four Super Zero’s, a Super Center, and a SS10 sub for my gaming computer and I’m really happy with them. I listen to music on them when I work from home and they are very clear and neutral. Size is good for placing them on the desk. You will want to add a sub at some point as any of the speakers are going to be limited on how low they can go. You can get them on Amazon so they are easy to return if you aren’t happy with them. A step up would be the SuperOne. It gets you a 6.5″ driver instead of the 4.5″, but they are much bigger so you will need room for them.

NHT SuperZero 2.1, <$60 each

These sound great to me and are small (5″ x 5.5″ footprint). They won’t sound complete/full without a subwoofer though. Dayton 8-inch or 10-inch would complement them nicely for music and they have speaker level inputs/outputs if you buy an amp without a subwoofer output, such as the SMSL SA50.

Small speakers with good audio for your PC? Might I recommend NHT SuperZeros, I just got a pair myself for using on my PC, upgrading from an RC Micro kit.

It’s 100$ a pair. So 200$ for a stereo setup and paired with a half-decent subwoofer, you can have quite the little system brewing.

http://www.amazon.com/NHT-SuperZero-2-1-Mini-Monitor-Speaker/dp/B00CKNOYWK

As said below, you will need an AVR or amp though.

What’s great about the SZ is their size…really it’s kind of amazing. It’s like half-way between small Sat speakers and full bookshelf speakers, and yet has the quality of most full size bookshelf speakers. SuperOnes are their upgraded brothers, with a bigger frequency range, but 50$ more ea, and slightly larger(Still not as large as full size bookshelf though, they fit on desks nicely.)

My own home office setup consists of: 2 NHT SupeZero 2.1, which I am in love with, a Dayton Audio Sub-1000 subwoofer (under the desk. Around $120) and driven by a Sony STR DH-550 AVR (about $280) connected to a Mac Mini via a Toslink Optical cable. The great thing is that if you do not like any of the items listed here, you can send them back no questions asked. I adore these NHT’s, simply superb.

How about some walnut colored jamos?

So AVR, 7 speakers, and a subwoofer. Sounds doable.

Denon s750h

Jamo s83, jamo s809, 4x nht superzero 2.1.

RSL speedwoofer 10s

Substitute the jamo s809 for the s807 to save some money.

I agree the Vanatoo Zero and JBL LSR305 are good options, but if you prefer passive speakers, I’d recommend these due to their great sound and very small size (need a subwoofer, though):

NHT Super Zero 2.1, $130/pair Sealed speakers that don’t need a lot of space behind them.

This is a small subwoofer for sale on Austin Craigslist: Sunfire SDS8, asking $175

Add a Topping, SMSL, or Fosi 2.1 mini amplifier for about $<100-150.

Have you checked out these? Keep in mind, they’re priced as an individual speaker. With a sub, I’m thinking they’d be pretty good.

You will have a huge difference in vocal quality and effects placement by using discrete speakers. You are right in that MTM’s do not always work best when on their sides because of the possible lobing effect causing cancellation of certain frequencies and making them more directional. Now if you still want to stay small, one of the very best small speakers is the NHT Super Zero 2.1 but they must be used with a decent sub. And yes, using two ways on their sides is just fine. They handle a lot of power and punchy enough to cover the distance to your chair. They are sold as singles so they could be used for the center channel also. See them here . They are only five inches wide by nine inches tall. Now add an for $400 and you RSL Speedwoofer ‘re in under the $600 mark for whole thing. The RSL has a pretty small foot print but if you can sacrifice a few hz of bass extension, the Emotiva S8 Flex Sub . Out of stock at the moment but a serious performer in less than a cubic foot. I own one and it really hits really strong to 30hz.

If you are just looking for an easy solution, it looks as if you could sneak an NHT Super Zero 2.1 in that spot. It’s acoustic suspension so as long as you have the baffle at the front edge of the shelf, it won’t mind being enclosed otherwise. Amazon sells singles for $65 or so. These are well known for midrange clarity and detail and can take a lot of power. You could buy another single down the road and pair them with a subwoofer for a great experience.

At 5 x 5.5 x 9 inches, these are larger than the Bose but may be worth considering NHT SuperZero 2.1, $61/each. Matching center NHT SuperCenter 2.1, $141. Great sounding speakers, especially for the price.

Because they are sealed, they can be placed close to the wall/corner and can be mounted with this satellite speaker mount.

Well here are some options that I would look at in no particular order.

Elac B5 $230 already mentioned.

NHT SuperZero 2.1 $115ea

Boston A 25 refurb $100 ea

Boston A23 $140 ea

Boston M25 $150ea

Focal little bird $100ea

Focal Sib $250

Focal Bird $150ea

Cambridge SX-50 $250

DefTech ProMonitor 800 $140ea

KEF E301 open box $280

Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 $300

I think any of these would be a nice upgrade from the Micca’s, which actually don’t sound bad for what they cost. I tried to stick with good brands that are not too big in size. I’m sure there are others but this is what came to mind when trying to keep with a smaller speaker that would be an upgrade.
