Diet matters, but it’s in my experience not as significant as other factors like hygiene, hormones, moisturizing, environment, skin irritation, and probably even stress. If you have to use BP and AHA/BHA to stay on top of your acne, you probably will have to continue these medications regardless of your diet.
You’ve got to remember, too, that a huge amount of the acne you see is basically scarring. That redness takes so long to go away that it can be very difficult to casually monitor progression. Especially if your dieting schemes change by the day. Just as likely that you touched your face with dirty hands or an allergen or something to cause that one post-McDonald’s zit as anything you ate (or didn’t eat).
> My skin has a ton of purple and red acne scars and active acne concentrated on my cheeks
Look into Accutane or whatever they currently call it and see if it’s a good fit for you. Especially if you have reason to believe acne might be something that sticks with you into adulthood. Stuff has side effects, but so does acne. And Accutane really does essentially cure you of acne forever. No more special products or routines. Also consider spot-treating w/ AHA lotion to supplement your BP and BHA routine. It seems to dramatically speed the heal-time of active acne and significantly speed up the healing/bleaching of acne scars and redness. I like this one and it includes some basic sunscreen protection (which is important because all these products can leave you more sensitive to sun damage).

Drink a lot of water.
Retinol is supposed to be good but it makes my face raw.
Alpha hydroxy works well. KissMYFace used to make a good one. Bonus, works on acne too.
Clinique makes good stuff.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin face lotion, iit burns a little bit, but that’s the ingredient doing its job.
Here’s a link to Amazon so you know what it looks like if you’re interested. I will admit it leaves my skin feeling a little oily so stopped using it twice a day and now only use it before bed, but I promise it works.
