Spend a few $$$ and get a USB3 attached SSD. Configure your Raspberry Pi for USB booting. You’ll get better performance and higher reliability. You will eventually kill the microSD card, and then you will be sad reconstructing things. I recently bought this Netac 250GB SSD for about $40 which hasn’t disappointed me so far. You could also spend more $$ and put a name-brand Samsung SSD into an external case that support UAS (USB attached SCSI), that I did with another Pi.

The Raspberry Pi 4 has enough CPU performance that you can run other workloads on it, but the crappy SD card I/O performance will prevent you doing that effectively. And the more you’re using it for, the more sad you will be when the SD card wears out.

You have a spinning regular old HDD connected to the pi?? That does sound like it would draw too much power.

I actually have an SSD and an RTLSDR (software defined radio) dongle both connected to the pi USB ports. In addition, the case I use has a fan which is also drawing power from the GPIO pins. I’ve had no trouble with the reliability/power draw.

I wonder if your power supply is falling short of what is recommended here.
