Depends on your budget and whether you think your living situation will allow you to bring a nicer machine with you (will you be moving far, will your roommates destroy it, etc). If you want to invest in something a little nicer, get a drip machine with a delay timer (to allow you to have coffee ready when you wake up) and a vacuum/air pot instead of a glass carafe and hot plate (which scorch the coffee and can be damaged by forgetting about it). It will probably be something like $60-80, but well worth it if you’re busy or tired and don’t want to make coffee every morning.

Edit: I believe this is the one we have. It’s currently $70 on Amazon and keeps coffee hot for 2 hours. Ask for it for your next gift.

Former barista here, glass carafe on a burner will give you burnt tasting coffee. You can get great tasting drip coffee with a stainless steel carafe not on a burner. Example:

My mom has had this mr coffee machine for a few years.

It stops dripping when you take out the carafe and has no hot plate which I view as a plus. Makes fine coffee and is very easy.

Not for an enthusiast but perfectly acceptable.

Might not be necessary, but I personally love this Mr. Coffee for my morning coffee. The carafe is insulated instead of having a heating element at the bottom, so essentially the coffee is retaining the heat it was brewed with instead of it being constantly reheated. This prevents the coffee from tasting burned over time. Might be overkill if it’s just you grabbing a quick cup in the morning, but it’s really awesome when I have friends or family over and having a leisurely breakfast.

I ended up going with this one. It was the last one I had, and I couldn’t find it until yesterday. It works fantastically.

Slightly out of your price range, but at $61 from Amazon, I’ve had good luck with this Mr. Coffee 10-cup Optimal Brew unit. If the specs are to be believed, it brews at 205 degrees, and the coffee it makes is actually very good. Nice shower head over the grounds so things get pretty evenly saturated. And it’ll work fine for a smaller pot, too.

The clock display burned out just a few months after I got it, but I didn’t care. All I ever use is the on/off button anyway.

When it dies, I’ll likely spring for a Bonavita 1900TS, but for now, this is serving me very well.

This is my coffee maker. It brews to 205 and the carafe keeps it hot for a few hours. I can brew just hot water too, so I don’t need an electric kettle for tea.
