The amplug /u/Tijal mentioned is a great solution. If you’re looking to do the same thing for significantly cheaper (though not quite as good quality-wise) then I think this is probably a good option.

It’s not for bass specifically, but it’s certainly better than plugging headphones in directly (plus it will work just as well for passive basses), and it’s only $12 w/free shipping (on Amazon). One cool feature is that it has a 3.5mm jack so you can plug in a music player of some kind and play along.

You are probably right that I should do something so I can actually hear it. Has anyone tried using monoprices amp plug?

I can’t vouch too much for the guitars personally, but both of the Guitar Centers near me have a bunch of the Traveler brand electrics in stock. The designs are kind of funky, but the two I played sounded fine plugged in and are really small. You could pair that with a headphone amplifier or mini amp. I’d go into a GC if there’s one close by so you can try them out.
