So this is the first search result that comes back when looking at the mechanical keyboards options on Amazon. Am I insane or is this just a generic membrane keyboard that is misclassified?

I just bought it also, and I managed pricematch for a type cover from amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Type-Cover-Black/dp/B0163H1HT6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460222392&sr=8-1&keywords=surface+pro+4+type+cover

They honored it. I am also going to be getting the microsoft protection plan in store. It has to be within 45 days of the purchase from what I remember speaking with a representative the other night.

The purple thing is the Surface Pro Type cover for my Surface Tablet which is my work-issued laptop. Kitty likes to lay on that keyboard and take over the mouse or press buttons while I try to use the “real” keyboard that is on the desk tray. Today I got fed up and disconnected the type cover but left it in place so she thinks she’s laying on my keyboard. 😀

The “real” keyboard is the Surface Ergonimc keyboard

Pretty decent deal at Staples right now:

Might have to pickup another one. 4GB of RAM works surprisingly well in Win10.

Add $87 for a type cover on amazon and a pretty great machine for under $700: https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Type-Cover-Surface-Pro/dp/B0163H1HT6

I was looking to see if the new type covers were any better, but I saw so many of them on Amazon and wasn’t sure which was the right one.

Is this the latest one?

$80 here for some reason, but worth it to pay $40 more for the fingerprint reader?

If you look around you can find it slightly cheaper.

I also found it on ebay for $560 brand new, and it comes with the Pen (and a 1 year Microsoft Warranty). This model only has a intel core M processor, but it is probably just fine for your needs. I would only be concerned if you were an engineer looking to use processor demanding programs. The core M processor is the same that is in the latest Apple Macbook 12”.

The keyboard is then ~$100. Do not buy a third party keyboard – the microsoft surface keyboard is an excellent keyboard and not one that should be cheaped out on.

I believe Microsoft’s official keyboard/cover for the Surface Pro 4 has a function key that works as both a toggle and a hold-down key:

> Well, its $1700 for the same i5/8GB/256GB configuration as the base MBP

Ok. Lets look at the stores shall we.

Base Mac Book Pro 13" is $1,500.

An equivalent Surface Pro 4 i5 model is $1,300. So $1,400 when you include the typecover.

Surface Pro is $100 cheaper. Same specs, and a much better screen. That machine isn’t in the Black Friday deal (well, free sleeve). Compare the i7’s and you see the same again. Surface Pro is $100 cheaper.

We traded comments elsewhere in this thread. I respect that you like Mac’s. I actually like them too. They are lovely machines. But lets not lie about costs here. They do cost more than an equivalent Surface Pro 4.

Unfortunately to get the specs you want, you’d be needing to resort to the used arena… which can be just fine. I got my SP4 used. A lot of people find that they don’t need them once they’ve exhausted the purpose they bought it for.

You’d need to go on craigslist for that, though. ebay wants almost full retail for the 8GB models. That $969 being the best deal I found so far, and you’d still need to buy the Typecover.
