Trying to edit is freaking my page out so just going to reply to myself.

MB 42X-C is the matching center for the MB42x, not the RB 42-C.

If your speakers are at ear level that’s great. However, getting them further out if you can will make the sound stage much bigger. If you can’t do it then you can’t do it was just a thought.

I’m a fan of matching the center to the mains but I know other people don’t and it’s not an issue for them. I simply found that center I linked on amazon and thought it was worth mentioning. If you like the way the mains sound then matching the center might be more difficult. I don’t know that a good quality center is must but it can make a difference. It’s doing dialogue so it doesn’t have to be the most dynamic sounding speakers but you do want something clear. However, I think the Micca MB42X-C $70 is a fine center.

I wouldn’t mess with a plastic center but that’s just me. I would also stay away from something that’s too small. They tend to be full range and not very efficient. I would almost go with a Micca over an ebay special. At least you know you’re getting something decent and if you upgrade the speakers the MB42X or two more centers is actually a great sounding system.

You could get two of these Micca Center channel speakers. And make sure your monitor stands that you buy allow you to raise up the monitors enough to put the speakers underneath. You’ll also want to be able to angle them up so they point towards your ears.

https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-C-Channel-Speaker-Tweeter/dp/B00HHFBEK6/

They will also need some kind of amplifier.

I have two Micca MB42X speakers connected to a SMSL SA-50. I’d like to add the Micca MB42X-C Center Channel Speaker. What do I need aside from the speaker itself? Do I need a totally new amp? I may want to add a subwoofer in the future, what’s a good one to not overwhelm this setup?

I have been using the Q5 pro for about nine months now with a pair of Micca MB42X-C in 2.0 config and I am very happy with it. I havent really felt the need for a sub, I get enough bass for my smallish bedroom/office without one.

The Q5 is also capable of pushing things to stupid levels of loud. I normally have the volume marked at 20 and my PC volume varies between 40-90, but the Q5 goes all the way up to 60, distortion for me starts around 52.

Two things: the included remote is almost worthless if you are going to actually use it on the regular, but the Logitech Harmony series of remotes will also work. a Harmony 350 can be had for ~30$ and used for other devices as well.

The sub out im sure will be handy someday but it does not have any crossover function, it just passes full signal so whatever sub you use should have a crossover built in.

Awesome! If you can fork over more a better setup would be to get two of these

As you have an extra driver for movies to get much better volume. Still adding a subwoofer, the one I linked above, would also complete a home theater experience.

If you have time/are able too watch the video by Zeos Pantera explaining this exact setup. He talks about why this is much better than soundbars, and also explains the positions, as well as how to wire it all up.

I like what Destruct0 has put together depending on how large the room is. If your room is on the large size I would almost want to go with two of the MB42X-C speakers and use them as the main channels. Yes this would be a 2.1 setup but you could add in a third one later on to complete the 3.1 setup. The MTM setup should give you a bit more volume that might be needed for a larger room.

If you don’t go with the 2.1 you want to make sure that you’re spacing the speakers out properly. Don’t put all the speakers under the TV…get the mains out to the sides a bit especially if you have large room.

Okay so it looks like you’ll be putting a pair of speakers on either side of the TV, and another in that little cubby under it?

First things first, you should get a 5 channel receiver so you can add speakers as you please. This Denon would be good for that budget.

Next up, let’s chat speakers. You said you can go up to $700, so I’m going to recommend some speakers that will take up that budget. The Wavecrest HVL-1 would be perfect for your situation. They’re front ported, so putting one in that little cubby wouldn’t be as bad as it would be if they were rear ported.

If you won’t be doing that, a great option would be the Micca MB42XC. Usually you would get a pair of the MB42X for the L/R and one MB42XC for the center, but since you mentioned it is a bit of an open floor plan, you might want the extra woofers to help you fill the room.

In addition, you’ll want a subwoofer. I’ve got that one and it is decent and should really fill the room with no problem.

I think either of these setups will be a fantastic little 3.1 setup for you, and will be expandable in the future as well.

Let me know if you have any questions about that stuff and I’ll be happy to help out.

Granted this is a TINY bit over budget but I really think a subwoofer and a center channel are important to give you the home theater experience.

This would support modern codecs, Bluetooth/AirPlay etc be able to take hdmi in from your devices then send a single hdmi to your projector to feed it video.

Later on when you have the $, buy another pair of the MB42X and use them as surrounds.

The biggest compromise with a home theater in a box like that is the bass and mid-bass response. The 6-1/2 driver in the ‘subwoofer’ is what you would expect to find in a high-end pair of bookshelf speakers for example, and good subwoofers are generally 12-15 inches in a large ported box.

You need an AVR, with 2 options

– a used 5.1 or 7.1 AVR (Denon/Yamaha/Onkyo) under 100$, or

– new AVRs like these

You also need the matching MB42X-C (70$)

I suggest saving up 300-500$ for the LR speakers. When you’re ready, you can move the MB42X for surround duty.

Another option is to pump this into a decent sub from SVS/Hsu. You can come back to improving the LCR much later, can cost 300$ and more.

As someone who just bought Klipsch RP-600M and RP-504C as my upgrade from my budget Micca speakers I can tell you right now that the Klipsch Reference (R) line speakers are budget speakers and very harsh sounding. They give Klipsch a bad name among audiophiles. You can get better speakers for the money.

I had already given you some options on your prior post:

Denon S750H $320

SVS PB-1000 $499

KEF Q150 $300

Klipsch RP-500M $299 with coupon Tv15 —- This sale expired and would’ve been awesome for 2.0

I’d get a Denon S650 refurb and 3.0 speakers to start, add a sub Later then the surrounds

S650 refurb plus 3 Micca MB42XC when they restock or Fluance Elite 5.0 or Jamo S803 / S83

Ya – some Centers can make a Good Stereo Pair – depending on tweeter location and waveguide. Some Centers are Marketed as LCR

I ran 3 Micca MB42XC as R- C – L for a few months then went to Infinity Reference and put 2 of the MB42XC on my Bedroom Tv –

https://www.reddit.com/r/BudgetAudiophile/comments/eicxby/ad18_mb42xc/

I’d rather run Miccas than the Pioneer center – but out of stock right now

For a 2 box solution for 3.0, a single 3 channel Speakerbars [Passive Soundbars] with an AV receiver. Then when you move you can upgrade to 3 or 5 separate speakers.

Or a better option is a pseudo soundbar by placing 3x small 4" center speakers in a row underneath the TV just like a soundbar. Those are Micca-MB42X for example. Then when you move and have more space you can move the left and right speakers to either side of your TV for better positioning and stereo separation.

Though sure a sound bar will be a bit better than the TV speakers then upgrade to a home theater system after you move.

Sorry for all the questions.. really appreciate your answers, you’ve given me more detail than anybody I’ve talked to at the audio/video stores I go into. Can I buy you a beer somehow? 🙂

I have one final question I think… my wife chose a TV Stand/Media Console to house all this stuff, and I only have 5.67″ of height for the center speaker, so unfortunately that rules out the Dayton Audio set, as well as the Pioneer set I brought up earlier.

So I’m looking at one of two options, first this Micca setup:

Micca MB42X for Front L/R and Rear L/R
Micca MB42X-C for Center (5.3 inches tall, fits my needs)
~$330 CAD for the set of 5 speakers, not bad!
https://www.amazon.ca/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00HHFBEK6

(Instead of the MB42X, maybe the RB42? https://www.amazon.ca/Micca-RB42-Reference-Bookshelf-Speaker/dp/B07JC416LG/ Seems better reviewed, would add $120 to the price to do those front and back, or just $60 more to do those in the front and still have MB42X in the rear)

(Another option is just to get 5 MB42X-C’s?… Or 3 for the front and 2 MB42X at rear)

or this Polk setup.. only other decently priced one I found with a small center.. but this center is much smaller than the Micca:

Polk Audio TL2 for Center
https://www.amazon.ca/Polk-Audio-Speaker-Center-Channel/dp/B0043M667M
Polk T15 for Front L/R and Rear L/R
https://www.amazon.ca/Polk-Audio-T15-Bookshelf-7-25-Inch/dp/B002RJLHB8
~$458 CAD for the set of 5 speakers

(Another option is the T300 set for $150/pair. Shaves $40 off the overall price, not sure if there’s much difference there. https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/polk-audio-polk-audio-t300-100-watt-bookshelf-speakers-pair-t300/10166613 )

I’m not a big fan of the look of the TL2 Bookshelf speakers.. so went for the T15/T300 instead.

Curious if you have any opinions about which to pick.. I’m leaning towards the Micca because they fill the shelves better and the reviews online seem to be decent, and the tiny TL2 center from Polk is… tiny.

To pair with all this I have a Polk Audio PSW10 subwoofer.. which gets alot of hate around here but seems more than powerful enough for my needs. Got it last night and hooked it up and I’m running it at about 10% on the gain dial and it’s more than enough for what I need.. will probably piss off my neighbours (semi-detached home) even at that level.

Again, thanks for your help, really appreciate folks like you that take the time to answer threads and help people out with their questions.

EDIT: All the above said.. after listening to a dozen reviews or so on the Micca line-up.. I think I’m leaning towards either:

1) RB-42 front and back, and MB42X-C center (really just because I can’t get the RB-42C in Canada). This sounds like I’d have alot more bass in the RB-42, but they are weak at high volumes. Filling a large room like I’ll have these in would be difficult, although most of the time I’m sitting fairly close to the speakers when watching TV, this would only be an issue while listening to music in the room somewhere other than the couch infront of it.

2) MB42X-C x 5 all around. More power and higher sensitivity and they seem to keep their clean sound at higher volumes. Less bass per speaker.. but I have the sub in the setup so hopefully that helps fill that gap (even though it’s a PSW10).

Long post, sorry… rambling a little as I go back and forth between options.

A decent 2.0 should make a bit difference in your TV viewing. The problem is the budget tight at $300. The 540 is perfect for a entry level system and if you can get it for $220 then it’s a good option.

The Pioneers that were linked would be a great option and the most affordable. If you wanted something different then two of the Micca MB42X-C $90 would be good but would push the budget pretty high.

If you wanted to just totally blow the budget and get something really nice I would go with the KEF Q150 $400 that seem to be on sale right now.

  1. Best DIY kit opens up a huge can of worms. However, I will say that I have heard the OS and they are very good speakers for the money and size. They about the smallest (they are deep though) speakers with deep bass that I have heard that don’t cost an arm and a leg. The C-notes are good but they are larger, don’t play as deep and are only slightly less expensive. If you’re looking for DIY options then I would totally go with the OS kits that are available.
  2. I figured that which is why I’m thinking about speakers that are small but still give good bass. If you go to small or pick a speaker that lacks low end it will sound thin and unimpressive.
  3. I got ya I figured this would be a mini amp build but it was worth the ask.

if you want to DIY then I would say go for it. However if you’re looking for speaker options here are a few that you can consider.

  1. Micca MB42X $80 (out of stock currently) or the center versions $70ea (you will need two) – These are rear ported but they are great for the size and will really put out some low end with a decent amplifier. The center versions are larger but you’re rewarded with more bass and slightly more efficiency. They are still small and should be able to be moved well.
  2. Polk S15 $160 – I know these are on the larger side for what you’re looking for but they do sound good, are on sale and have the power port. The power port allows them to be against the wall without having the negative effects on the port output.
  3. Elac B5.2 $200 – These are another larger speaker especially with the front port. However, they are front ported so you can put them against the wall without issues. Again if you go to small you will be lacking the low end that really makes a difference in the sound.

For an amplifier I would go with the SMSL AD18 $140 if you can get it in the budget. It’s small, has an optical input, sub out (for later) and plenty of power. I have heard this amp with several speakers and it’s pretty impressive. The eq feature of this really allows you to make speakers sound great.

I would also think about stands if I were you but that’s just me. I know it’s more to move but it helps to improve the sound.

I upgraded my center channel from a old crappy Sony AIO center (SS-CNP2) to a Micca MB42X-C center channel speaker. Night and day difference.

You can get matching fronts, too. Upgrade your center and fronts for about $160.

I would go for the Micca MB42X for the fronts, Micca MB42X-C for the center, Denon receiver, and Dayton subwoofer. Unfortunately wireless rears are a bit complicated… there are adapters but they have mixed reviews. IMO though, a solid 3.1 setup is significantly better than a mediocre soundbar setup. The nice thing is these components will be useful for years to come too — they’ll last much longer than the Vizio soundbar and if something fails you can replace the single failed component, rather than needing to replace everything. You can also upgrade over time and build out the system as needed.

You’ve got the bug my friend. Don’t feel bad you all have it or will have it at some point. If it makes you feel any better the X1300 really does make those Micca’s sound fantastic. Sure my KEF’s do sound better but honestly you’re fine with Micca’s as long as you ran Audyssey when you set them up. For HT I think they do just fine especially with a decent sub (F12 for sure) holding down the low end.

With that being said I would get another set of Micca’s either the X or non X for the rears. They will reach low enough to meet the other at the xover point and blend perfectly with the others. If you get the X versions (great value for the money) you can run in multi-channel stereo and have it sound great.

I get wanting to upgrade but you don’t have to. If you really want to upgrade consider this. Get two of the MB42X-C’s $70ea and put them vertically. That way you have a full LCR setup with identical speakers. They will give you better bass, cross a bit lower and give you a bit more volume vs the books. They look really good sitting on stands, like mini towers. If you don’t have speaker stands $40 get some. Move your speakers out and up to the correct height. You will be surprised what moving the speaker out and getting to the right height can do. If you do change speakers and/or change the position make sure to re run you Audyssey setup. This is the upgrade path I would seriously consider.

27th Mar 2017

Normally you would really want to match your center with your left and right speakers, but trying to find something smaller that’s still cheap here you go:

  1. The Emotiva BasX LCR at $150.

  2. The RBH E3c LCR at $90 which takes more power to drive than the emotiva and a bit more than the Pioneers.

  3. The Micca MB42X-C at $90. This is a solid speaker but I don’t think it would match too well with your pioneers due to the differences in the treble region.

You can always try either buying another set of pioneers and just using one as a center channel, or something like a single RBH R5Bi and lay it on it’s side but this may mess with the dispersion pattern and being more than 15 degrees off-center may have bad results.

The speakers you’ve got are pretty limited. they look like the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 computer speakers on stands. The sub is useless, so you’re basically starting from scratch. I’ve linked what will get you going with what you’ve got. But long run, if you like having a system, you’ll want to upgrade out of those 4 you’re starting with.

This is bottom dollar equipment, except the center is the more expensive model because I figured, why skimp all the way. But this will make a 5.1 with your 4 speakers. I linked the cheapest sub I could find, but this may be worth the extra money, depending on your taste:

depends on what you consider decent, a powerful subwoofer would take up all your budget by itself.

my proposal:

Receiver

center channel

surrounds, buy two pairs

sub

this setup is about $675 all together, but will probably sound a whole lot better than something you buy in a box at bestbuy

My aunt’s system recently took a turn for the worse and she had to return a 5.1 system after the sub blew. Instead of just getting new speakers she want’s to just get a sound bar. She still has the amp that is capable of 5 speakers I’m just wondering if just getting a center is better than a sound bar.

The old system was an older version of this.

You could do something cheap like this amp: http://www.parts-express.com/smsl-q5-2x50w-amplifier-dac-with-optical-coaxial-usb-version-2–230-208 and 2 of these speakers: http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-C-Channel-Speaker-Tweeter/dp/B00HHFBEK6 $260

If you’re wanting a 2.1 for under $500 that’s not hard at all. Others have already given you some good options. If it were my money I think I would do the following.

Under $500 and a nice system.

The sony will do but you won’t be getting some of the more advanced features. You can scrap that whole Samsung system and rebuild from scratch using the sony as the base. Forget wireless, that is a four letter word around here. You still have to wire everything anyways and then add power to both ends.

I’d start with a decent pair of bookshelves to the left and right of the TV, don’t worry about a center because the LEFT and RIGHT will be so close together you won’t need one. The narrowest speakers I know of are the Micca LCR’s which (I like) you can stand up on end and purchase some short stands for. The only concern being that giant dog knocking into it but some double stick tape should secure them plenty. That doesn’t leave much left over in your budget but that will already be a great start for a new sound system. You can keep two of the shitty samsung towers for the rear until you get something better to replace them.
