I have a medium sized corner sit/stand desk (from Ikea – I think it’s the Bekant), with a low-end but fully adjustable office chair (I think it’s an Office Master PT76) – have had both for a few years, well predating COVID WFH-all-the-time.

I’ve got two monitors, a Dell U3818DW 38″ (3840×1600, with a slightly odd 24:10 aspect ratio, but have slightly more vertical pixels is nice) as my main one, and a Dell U2717D (27″ 2560×1440) which doesn’t get a lot of use, angled in off one side. When I started working from home, I had the 27″ plus a 24″ 16:10 (which one of my kids now uses.)

The 38″ is on a heavy duty monitor arm if I need to move it back or higher. The 27″ just has a stand, but I plan to get a monitor arm for it one of these days.

I have a cooling pad and can use this with either my personal not-officially-gaming laptop or my work one via a USB-C dock for power + ethernet + USB + the 2nd monitor, and then drive the main one off its own USB-C. One of these days I’ll get a full thunderbolt dock to have a single-wire connection.

I have an old DSLR on a stand (basically an arm that clips to the monitor arm) I use instead of a webcam, and then a ~$20 conference-room-style omnidirectional USB microphone.

For a keyboard, I use one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0722GG88M – it’s a tenkeyless low profile blue-switch mechanical keyboard, and a fairly inexpensive one. I got it several years back for travel, and found it was my favorite keyboard ever even for day to day use.

For a mouse, I use the Logitech MX Ergo trackball.

I’ve got some old 4.1 gaming speakers, but for work video conferencing I’ve ended up using the built-in speaker in the 38″ – it doesn’t sound very good for music/games but it is very clear for voice.

Just upgraded from a cheap mechanical keyboard from Amazon with “Kailh low-profile switches” to a Durgod K320 with Cherry Blue switches.

Something feels off about the new keyboard. The switches don’t click every time. It’s also easy to press a key in a way that results in a missed keystroke, especially when pressing the same key repeatedly.

The old keyboard didn’t have either of these issues. I thought I was getting a replacement that would feel basically the same as the old one, with better switches.

Is my new keyboard defective, or were my expectations off? Should I have bought something different?

I haven’t found my real “holy grail” of any component yet, but so far my razer viper ultimate has been a super solid replacement for my logitech g903+powerplay (which worked amazing, until I was forced to switch to G Hub).

The big caveat on that, and pretty much all other razer gear, is that their stuff seems pretty solid but it doesn’t seem to last.

For keyboards, I still haven’t found one that is a perfect replacement. I’ve tried some randos (this HAVIT is nice, but lacking some creature comforts), several corsairs, a few ergo keyboards, but haven’t quite found a perfect replacement for my G915.

Honestly I might just go back to membrane keys for a while, I’m growing increasingly frustrated with trying to find one that is low profile and comfortable to type on.

ok. yeah if you’re comparing the key caps position relative to the edge of the board than that will work. how tall the side of the case is, is different from how elevated your plate is though.

kailh low profile switches are also only compatible with low profile keycaps, which are very short and flat. so i think that would also help.

this havit keyboard is a good example.

Well, almost all custom mechanical keyboards are going to be the thicker type that you’re not hot on. But something you could look into is boards that are compatible with Choc switches.

Link to US Amazon but you get the idea, at least. Don’t know what might be available in French AZERTY, but this can give you a starting point of what to look for.

If you’re looking for something off the shelf, I’ve been pretty happy with this one: https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Extra-Thin-Switches-Rollover/dp/B0722GG88M/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=havit+keyboard&qid=1568562928&s=gateway&sprefix=havit&sr=8-4

Custom low profile boards are not very common.

I had the Logitech K380 for a while and it’s not very good. None of Logitech’s keyboards are. The best ultraportable is the Lenovo Compact Thinkpad Keyboard. I had the Bluetooth version and it was unfortunately very unstable (not everyone has this issue apparently), but they also make a USB version.

For an even better keyboard, go mechanical. The Anne Pro 2 is a great option, but it’s much bigger than the Lenovo one. There are also low profile options like this one, but these switches are fairly new so not that many boards so far.

This question is very relevant to my interests! Have many mechanical keyboards and just got Masters in SC2.

I’m currently using this one and I think it’s great: https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Extra-Thin-Switches-Rollover/dp/B0722GG88M

The combination of low profile keycaps and a light switch is perfect for gaming.

For a mechanical keyboard this is actually pretty cheap. Really, if you want durability all you need is to search for mechanical keyboards at your price range.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0722GG88M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_37mKBbFFB1CJR

As for the mouse, just get one with a braided cable. Or braid it yourself to save on a few dillars. Granted I can’t tell garantee the clicks won’t wear out

Coolermaster is coming out with a new low profile CK line, though that will be a couple of months.

Havit has several models with Kailh Choc low profile switches. There is also the Drevo Joyeuse, but good luck finding one.

This Havit with low-profile Kailh switches is ridiculous value for the price. Great key action with that click bar mechanism. I have one and think it’s great, even next to much pricier options. https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Extra-Thin-Switches-HV-KB390L/dp/B0722GG88M

Looking for recommendation for compact (tenkeyless) laptop-like gaming keyboard. Razer DeathStalker would’ve been perfect choice if it weren’t so huge. Small Logitech keyboards are good, but I don’t like them being wireless. Among mechanical, I’ve tried Blackwidow X Tournament Edition and Ornata – I’m getting my fingers stuck between the keys all the time (height difference compared to laptop keyboards).

Not quite sure about this one: https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Extra-Thin-Switches-HV-KB390L/dp/B0722GG88M/

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

There is this low profile HAVIT keyboard with kailhs low-profile blue switches, which feel and sound better than the usual “blue” switch imo

Logitechs mechs are not really good and not worth the money so you ought to avoid them. Their mice are great though.

It’s a Havit keyboard, don’t think it has a real name itself. Has knockoff blue switches but for 60 bucks I love it.

For the keyboard, you have a ton of options. I personally like mechanical, so I have a somewhat portable mechanical one.

For a stand, I recommend Roost. There’s a knockoff called NextStand, but it simply doesn’t adjust as well and takes up more space.

Here’s a Chyrosran video covering these switches, the Havit product page for the board and the Kaihua product page for the switches. I think the blues on this board are the same as the clicky tactile (white stem) ones in the video.

I’ll try to answer any questions. Overall I’m impressed by the switches (and the board is fine); I just don’t know what applications they might have. It’s definitely a niche product.

Edit: I’ve heard that these switches aren’t the same as the white Kailh switches in the Chyrosran video. Not sure what the difference is yet.

Ah, yeah. I’m new to Kailh Choc switches, but I love them so far. There don’t seem to be many keycap sets for Chocs, like there are for MX keycaps.

These keyboards use Choc switches and harvesting the keycaps might work, depending on your layout:

Havit HV-KB390L Tenkeyless

Havit HV-KB395L Full-size 104-key

NuType F1 60% Wireless

It’s a pretty expensive option and they still don’t look nearly as good as the MX keysets.

I play competitive fortnite (earned a couple thousand as of now) and am looking to upgrade my keyboard. I currently play on this :https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Extra-Thin-Switches-Rollover/dp/B0722GG88M

I really like the feedback it gives, but its been getting old and I kinda want to try something new. Are there any good, fast, and clicky keyboards out there that people would recommend? I particularly want one that gives a lot of feedback. I’m currently looking at the razer hunstman w/ purple clicky optical switches but undecided.

https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Extra-Thin-Switches-Rollover/dp/B0722GG88M You will not be able to swap caps, but that will be the closest to scissor switches.

Rubber domes, and even scissor switches are a type of rubber dome, have a tactile feeling at the start of your press. Browns are probably closer in feel, but have a lot more travel than any scissor switch. You can buy a Coolermaster Masterkeys S PBT within budget off Amazon, then buy some nice caps, but the feel will be different from a laptop keyboard. Many of us get a second keyboard just to use with our laptops just so we do not have to use the laptop keyboard. An Anne Pro 2 is a pretty good wireless model.

Yo, that keyboard exists, and it is the Havit Low Profile TKL with blue clicky switches, which is the closest to what you want.

I actually have the Morgrie as well, and the havit. The Havit is great to work with. There is a red/linear version of it as well.

The Havit is just a great keyboard to work with, and it is very cheap as well. It has no media keys/extra features, but for the price it is one of the best keyboards out there.

don’t buy that one, many people got problems with spacebars. either buy a normal membran keyboard like we posted before, or a mechanical keyboard, but don’t buy a membran keyboard with extra stuff added to fake a mechanical keyboard. you will have problems with it for sure.

how about that one? it’s not wireless, but you can detach the cable, it’s pretty much the same like the g815 but for way less money. same quality otherwise, the g815 looks little bit better but costs way much more. it’s a good keyboard. don’t know about the blue switches tho, maybe you can find it with ones you like more https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Extra-Thin-Switches-Rollover/dp/B0722GG88M/

> The wireless connection only worked for up to 1.5 metres or so

Yeah, the 2.4 GHz band is typically very polluted these days. I get the same limitation from my Logitech Unifying Receiver. In my home theater I ended up running an active USB extension cable closer to my seats and attaching a USB hub back there. My HID dongles are plugged in across the room from my actual PC. I cheated. 🙂

> One LED (one of the F-functions) didn’t display red and there didn’t correctly display the RGB colours.

Hey, I think I saw your Amazon review. You’re famous! Mine doesn’t suffer this issue. But the Sink87G is dirt cheap in the mech keyboard world. I guess one is more likely to encounter a lemon in the sub $100 price range.

> I didn’t find it that much better to type/game on than a ‘normal’ keyboard.

This hobby is definitely a solution to a first world problem. I’m old enough to remember when buckling spring keyboards were common. First time I used a membrane keyboard in a computer lab, my first impression was “wtf was done to this poor keyboard?” I switched computers and was horrified to find they were all that spongy and obstinate. Of course, I’ve used some truly horrible keyboards in my time — the kind where, if you saw them, you’d wonder if the girl whose water broke at that workstation made it to the hospital in time. Using something so horrible really makes one appreciate the finer things.

If you grew up with membranes, then you probably consider it normal punching the keys until they bottom out. That’s completely understandable. And modern membranes have improved, some incorporating a tactile snap reminiscent of what you probably felt with your Outemu Browns. I’m not surprised you didn’t find the experience a profound improvement.

Of course among mech keyboard fans, many do not like brown switches. Many prefer linear reds and clicky blues, stiffer blacks and whites, and some insist on buckling spring. I bet if you got a keyboard with red switches and practiced typing without bottoming out for a day or two, you might come to appreciate the speed benefit over your Microsoft keyboard.

Hey, I wonder if you’d like low profile switches, something like the Havit HV-KB395L (low profile blues) or this Magic Refiner MK10 (low profile reds)? They’ve got less travel than typical mechs, and may feel more familiar while still an improvement over your Microsoft keyboard?

I am looking for a mechanical keyboard Under $100 that feels similar to this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0722GG88M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but the keys are bigger or space apart. I tried this keyboard last time but the keys are so small and close to eachother that I couldn’t type fast without making too many mistakes. I like the lowprofile of that

So is there a keyboard similar to the one above with bigger keys? I like how that keyboard feels, it’s a shame it’ s to small

Does this keyboard look like it can be customized? If it is, what kind of keycaps would work for it?

Touch typing is usually associated with low-profile keyboards. Unless you have a low-profile keyboard, touch typing is not really relevant. You can find low-profile keyboards with Macbook-like (but better) keycaps that are suited for touch typing.

Here are examples:

keychron k1 on amazon (linked)

I’ve been looking at low-profile compact keyboard options recently, and to my surprise it’s proving trickier than expected, so I’m asking for suggestions

Criteria are as following:

  • Low-profile and generally thin
  • Doesn’t necessarily have to be mechanical but is to be used for a lot of typing
  • Function key row
  • US-style layout (wide LShift, Horizontal Enter key)
  • Normal-sized arrow keys (not Apple-style half-height)
  • Either normal TKL or 84-key – needs Home, End, Delete keys
  • Can have or not have backlight^((so long as it’s not always-on and shining like a thousand suns))
  • Can be wired or wireless
  • <=$150; shipping from US

Am currently using a Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop keyboard. The keys feel really nice, and the layout is good, but so far the mid-keyboard gap isn’t quite clicking with me (I’ve pressed Y with my left hand for at least 10 years now, and here it’s on the right side) and their other keyboards with same type of keys are all full-sized.

I have a Logitech K380 lying around, and it’s alright (no high standards, mostly used with mobile devices), but not a fan of squished arrow keys.

Current considerations:

Update: Settled on HAVIT. Sharkoon seems OK too but only ships from Germany (?) and is a little thicker; Thinkpad is generally highly regarded but the layout is a bit oddish (Fn is left-most key) and my life can do without the perspectives of cleaning any more laptop-esque (inset) keyboards.
