I’ve used the Luna ones for years for the mattress (you’ll need to cover the box spring if you have one).

For pillows I end up using the full cotton ones because they are otherwise too hot, and just wash weekly and fully replace the pillows regularly.

I own this one and it lasted 10 years or so. It could keep going, but I bought a new one when there was a major amazon discount. Bed still looks brandy-new.

It seems there is 30% off right now still. Comes in all the sizes. They are waterproof. Kid-tested, parent-approved. Luna Covers

I have this one from Amazon and it’s truly waterproof and has lasted for several years. Luna Queen Size Premium Hypoallergenic Waterproof Mattress Protector – Made in The USA – Vinyl Free https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B002AQNXR4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_YT5V6E66V7VVM1AGXP92?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

This is what we use right now. Not sure if something else would be more breathable or if I’m just going to have to deal with it lol. It works pretty good as far as the water proofing. I think it uses TPU similar to cloth diapers.

No mattress protector is going to have 0 effect on the feel of the bed. They are all terrible. A mattress with a removable/washable cover is a better solution. If you have pet issues with urine or vomiting then that probably isn’t an option. I feel your pain. We have 6 cats so we have mattress protectors. In our bedroom we have thick high quality Layla protector on the mattress and a mattress topper on top of the protector. So the mattress topper is “exposed”. Though it’d be much easier to replace a $300 topper than a $1000 mattress if we had to.

The cheap protectors on Amazon will have the least impact on the feel of the mattress though. Luna is my favorite of the 10 or so we tried:

I’m sleeping on a Casper currently. I used to sleep on a Sleep Number mattress but I honestly like this one a lot better.

When I worked at that mattress factory back in the day, I had to haul off a 1 month old $5000 Tempurpedic memory foam mattresses that this couple really didn’t like. I was really surprised to find that people pay so much for a mattress that they end up hating. That memory foam absorbs body heat and doesn’t breathe like latex does. You end up sinking into the mattress to the point where rolling over or moving in the middle of the night becomes frustrating.

Whatever mattress you end up with, buy a mattress cover to protect it. I got this highly rated one off of Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002AQNXR4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Nice pillows and pillow protectors are a good upgrade too. I ended up saving so much money from buying my mattress online that grabbing extras like new pillows and a really nice set of sheets didn’t hurt my wallet so much. These pillows are super squishy and provide low-to-medium support: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SONR1W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1#

Sheets make a big difference to me and when I first saw the price on the sets at Parachute, I chuckled at how ridiculously high they seemed. I asked around online and bit the bullet. I have never been so satisfied day after day with any purchase. http://www.parachutehome.com (They talk about how they get softer after each wash and I thought that was total BS. It’s actually true. The sheets get softer the longer you use them!)

Watch this video to learn more about what makes the Casper and Tuft and Needle mattresses different. It talks about what they’re made of and who they’re geared towards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sov1T1BJ-mc
