Anyone know of one of those keyboard/mouse lapboard combos like the K400 but mechanical?

Can’t seem to find any besides the “Here’s a mechanical keyboard, just add in your own wireless mouse for $75” type products…

If I were ever to do it WHICH I DONT I’d just hook up a cheap chrome book with hdmi to the tv and get a wireless keyboard with a trackpad that can turn it off and on from the couch like this one Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard… https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DKZTMG

I’ve got two of these. The new one (K400 in the pic) is so annoying. The trackpad have super slow sensitivity even on max setting, and when you scroll with two fingers it constantly rightclicks. It feels much cheaper than my old one:

My old one (Amazon link) (many years old, idk if it was called k400 back then too, but it’s exactly the same, besides the yellow line below the trackpad and some extra multimedia buttons) is miles better, IIRC.

I will dig through my old storage and see if I can find the old one. And see if I remember correctly. Lol.

No problem I’m sorry that controller input does not work yet for quest standalone, here is the link to the keyboard that I’ve been using for years when I use my quest natively

I’ve run an HTPC since the ’90s, have tried a number of different controllers but I keep coming back to a keyboard/trackpad combo. The Folmon looked interesting until I saw the actual size. My fat fingers would have a lot of trouble with that tiny keyboard.

I currently use the Logitech Harmony to control everything else but switch to a Logitech K400 when using the HTPC as a PC.

Ive used this to play Deus Ex. It worked okay. The keys are smaller then a normal keyboard, so your left hand sits a little differently. The trackpad isn’t the quickest response but worked well enough for me to beat both games on geforce now.

> You are not very good at reading.

For someone that missed me saying repeatedly that I used a PC from my couch for years you shouldn’t really be talking.

I’m going to say this one more time just so you understand.

You. Do. Not. Need. A. Monitor. For. A. PC.

There is literally nothing preventing you from sitting on your couch and using a mouse and keyboard connected to your PC that is connected only to a TV. I used my PC like that for years, I did not have a monitor connected to my PC during that time since I had nowhere to put a monitor without a desk. I used a wired keyboard/mouse plugged into a USB hub next to my couch until my roommates bought me this keyboard for Christmas. I know you might miss the point entirely here and say “Well try gaming on that trackpad!” to which I would reply, “I used a wireless mouse when I played first person shooters”. It worked well, I don’t see why you keep insisting on needing a monitor

These days I use controllers when I game in bed because it’s convenient, but I still have the wireless logitech keyboard that I use when I want to browse the web to watch Netflix or Hulu (when I’m too lazy to switch over to the Firestick.)

Also, I see that while you mentioned the monitor to be a one off comment that isn’t important, you ignored the statement about the XBox Series X using an RX580 and being easily beat by a cheap 5700/Ryzen upgrade to a 6 year old PC.

I have one of these wireless keyboard+trackpad combos and it’s not bad. The left-click button in the top left is pure genius.

Obviously I’d prefer mechanical but AFAIK nothing like that exists… although I may try doing something with mousekeys once I get a programmable board

I’d rather use this than click through keyboard buttons with a D-pad. Also youtube searches take seconds where they were previously slow and painful with my kodi stick.

Yes, it isn’t perfect “yet” where you can control everything easily without a keyboard and mouse but simply get a wireless mouse/touchpad combo like this and you should be good.

Might have to google some guides on like getting your PC to turn on from controller turning on and boot into Steam Big picture and you should be good.

There is also solutions like steam link and Nvidia’s version of it which work fine.

I’m using a cheap Logitech wireless keyboard that has a track pad. You have to plug in a USB module into your TV that came with the keyboard but it works great and batteries last forever. I have a 2015 XBR55X850C Bravia.

Pretty much any keyboard or mouse will work, though I’m 90% sure only the basic functions will work, so dont go out buying like some super legit gaming keyboard and mouse with a ton of extra macro buttons and functions on them, as im pretty sure none of that will work. Best bet is to just get a basic wireless keyboard and mouse imo, that way you can use them from wherever youre sitting with your wireless controller. Personally I use mainly just the controller, and a keyboard for typing, but I don’t really need a dedicated mouse for playing the game since again, I use the gamepad, so I personally use this guy- https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG Since the only thing I really use the mouse for in FF14 is rearranging/resizing my UI, a trackpad is good enough for basic stuff like that, and I like the convenience of having it all their in one package. So I just play with my controller and have the keyboard sit in my lap or just sitting next to me so I can just grab it when I need it to type or like I said want to rearrange my UI or whatever.

I’m not sure how many there are out there on the market but out of the ~90 I have, none. I have a few like Project Cars, Adventure Time, and House of the Dying Sun that I use controllers with but I don’t need to actually be at my PC to use them since they’re wireless (or you can use an extension).

The only games I’ve used with a keyboard and mouse were a modded Half Life 2 (which I wouldn’t recommend) or when playing a normal PC game in a theatre, but you can also just use one of these depnding on the game, though to be honest I pretty much never play games like this.

This $28 keyboard/trackpad has been great for me. Trackpad can be a little on the small side when moving the cursor on a large TV, but it gets the job done.

The original plan was to use HTPC software (XBMC back then) but we got busy when I was setting it up and we got really used to just using windows and a wireless keyboard/pad. So we just do that. Allows us to basically stream anything without issues.

We picked up a Logitech K400 and it’s worked very well so far, although it doesn’t work well without a clear line of sight between it and the receiver so you have to make sure you have that (no holding it behind a laptop or your legs). Maybe the more expensive versions work better.

Only real issue I have with it is that I can’t seem to get the machine to wake from sleep using the keyboard like I want, I have to open the cabinet and press the power button each time. The USB ports lose power when in sleep mode and I can’t figure out how to get it to work, even after trying everything I’ve found online and having all settings correct. I think it may be the motherboard I got, but no idea.

  1. The Steam Controller is garbage. One of the worst controllers I’ve ever seen, let alone used. Sure it allows for easy couch gaming for strategy games and actual PC navigation, but it is completely wasted for action games.
I recommend buying a simple wireless keyboard and mousepad for easy PC navigation from the couch. Something like this: ( https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG ).
For playing Paragon, you can get a USB dongle that allows you to use your PS4 controller on PC, so I’d recommend that if it’s what you’re uaed to.

  2. PC games often have their prices reduced much faster then console games, and some start out lower too (Overwatch was $40 compared to console’s $60). I know I don’t preorder unless I absolutely want the game and the stupid bonus I’d get from preordering, but I’m not you. You can preorder if you want. You cn buy games on launch day. Or you can wait 2 years til the game is $4.99 on Steam. You can do whatever you want with your money. One thing I don’t recommend though is buying disks, because that means that now you have to add a disk drive to your PC build… And that’s just pointless.

  3. I’d avoid buying a prebuilt gaming computer, especially a prebuilt “gaming” laptop. Instead, build one yourself. It will take more work to build one yourself, but it will take more money to buy one pre-built.

I bought the previous version of that keyboard for the new VR PC I built and it’s been working just fine. Don’t have my Vive yet, so I can’t say with 100% certainty, but I can’t fathom why it would cause an issue. You should be good.

Most of the APKs work fine once you enable installation from unknown sources. There are some APKs that don’t work correctly from FireTV, since they do a check for the Operating System. WatchESPN is an app that comes to mind that you have to get an APK for an Android phone. If you try to sideload the FireTV WatchESPN APK, you get errors.

Keep in mind that a lot of apps won’t work properly with a remote, since they are made with touch gestures in mind. It’s smart to get a mouse or keyboard to use on the TV so that you can use these sideloaded apps properly. This one works perfect.

On mobile so idk if that will hyperlink or not. If youre sitting at a desk, there may be better options. The benefits of this one are its size being small enough to handle when youre not at a desk and the built in track pad which you also wouldnt need if youre at a desk. But it is the best multimedia keyboard you could ask for. And it has a sleep button built in so you can wake it up or sleep it really easily.

I bought this: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG

It’s a fine wireless keyboard, and even has a built in touchpad (which I much prefer over the touchpad on the PS4 controller). The feel of the keys is okay, but not great. The only other gripe I have is that the layout puts the right shift key in a weird place and makes it really tough to hit.

It’s a tough little keyboard that doesn’t lag when typing and the batteries seem to last quite a while.

EDIT: I forgot to add that I use this keyboard quite a lot, as BSing with my FC is one of my favorite parts of this game. After having put many hours of use into it, I’d say that it’s a great little keyboard aside from the two little gripes mentioned above.

Klunky?!

Being able to type a search term into youtube or netflix is still the best way to go.

Have you ever used a smart tv where you had to use the arrow keys to type a search term in? And wait a second after each keypress because all tv interfaces are slow as shit?

It would be annoying to use a regular mouse though. Consider something made for TV, like the Logitech K400 Amazon link.

I use this one, but it’s a keyboard with a touchpad as opposed to a mouse.

It was recommended by somebody who has kids and apparently survived things like having juice spilt on it, being dropped, stepped on, etc. I’ve changed the batteries twice within a year of using it and never experienced any lag!

I’ve not noticed any serious input lag, again though, everything in my house is hooked up with Ethernet. Personally though I wouldn’t play anything like Street Fighter on it anyways, that’s just asking for trouble. I’ve played a bunch of games but maybe there are some in my library that have an issue with it, can’t say for sure yet.

I’ve had a few fuckups while starting Fallout 4 the first couple times where I had to go do something on my PC to fix it but it’s just across the room so it wasn’t a big issue for me. Things like the config window can throw off the system a bit, though it helps if you have a mouse/keyboard connected to the thing.

I use a Logitech k400r along with my Steam controller with it so I get added functionality of really being able to just use my PC on my TV without mucking around with the controller as a pretend keyboard.

I used to have one of these. They’re terrible. I switched to a larger but much more comfortable and reliable Logitec Kr400. It’s just as wireless and the mousepad is very responsive. Best of all, the keyboard feels great and “normal”.

The price is also very good even compared to the Rii.

Are you mainly getting it so you can chat easier with others, or are you turning your PS4 into a mini-PC?

If you’re up wanting to just chat, try a Keyboard + Touchpad combo like this: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG

That way you have a way to control the cursor as well, opens up a number of options for you.

If you’re trying to go keyboard+mouse, go to a local store that has some physical displays and see what you like, and start from there. I’d skip the mice that require special software to use the extra buttons, cause that isn’t happening on a PS4.

Are you using Wi-Fi? The Wi-Fi antennae write run from the motherboard up to the screen by the hinges. The Wi-Fi will still work and those wires aren’t a big deal.

The big deal is whichever wire supplied the screen with power. I would suggest you take the laptop apart and disconnect all the wires that were clipped, replace the Wi-Fi antennae (probably a couple dollars or just make your own), then put it back together. That way you won’t short out the entire machine and should get better signal.

It’s too late now, but I don’t think decent wireless hdmi exists. Decent wireless keyboards do. I have this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_uOpJvbBQ7Q2KT on hooked up to my pc in the living room.

Do fix your computer, then get the keyboard. Then no wires and you can keep it plugged in.

Not too bad actually. I wasn’t really expecting much to be honest when I bought it (I got it for $25 on amazon). It feels a little flimsy, but it’s actually pretty sturdy. I’ve dropped it a couple of times and it still functions like it should. It’s light and compact and fairly quiet when typing. I use it when I hook up my laptop to my TV and there’s no problems at all with range or anything. It works right out of the box on Windows and Linux (not sure about Mac).

9/10 would recommend.

So I thought it over and it dawned one me that I could just get a wireless keyboard and mouse. I guess I could have spent less and got the remote but I figured if my keyboard or mouse ever craps out for some reason I can use the wireless ones. I also chose this because I am impatient and and if it doesn’t work for some reason I can bring it back to the store and not have to deal with the hassle of shipping. I looked around at a few places and I came across this. It was on sale for $29.99. I liked that I could have a decent sized keyboard and it had the mouse option all in one. It works quite well. Make sure you use the Harmony software, if you can. It makes integration of multiple devices that much easier. Also, be sure to check you have the latest version the Flirc software.

You probably aren’t going to be too satisfied with remote interaction on webpages; it’s do-able, just not a great user experience.

Binding direction keys on the remote and single / double click actions will do almost everything on a PC. You can also just create shortcuts to shut down the system, though turning on the PC could not be done via Flirc since the Flirc would be plugged into a powered-down PC.

If you’re looking for a more interactive HTPC environment, a wireless keyboard touchpad combo might better fit the bill:

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Touchpad/dp/B005DKZTMG

Another alternative is something like Unified Remote:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Relmtech.Remote&hl=en

You install resident software on the PC, and then you can control / emulate any function on your phone or tablet.

I’m in the states as well, and Amazon is the place to go for me. They’ve got everything.

For cases, I really like C4 Labs’ cases, especially the black-and-clear Zebra line.

For a power supply, you’re probably going to want one that is 5V/2.1A — any less and you might run into power issues, so it’s better to be on the safe side. Some of my Pis (like my Pi Zeros) run well simply connected to a USB port on my computer, other Pis (like my Pi 2) do not. This is most likely due to those particular USB ports only putting out ~1 amp or so.

You’ll also want an HDMI cable probably, and for this, I would recommend going away from Amazon and trying out monoprice.com — they’ve got good, cheap cables galore, though you can probably also find a decently-priced HDMI cable on Amazon as well.

I use the Logitech K400 keyboard for my Pis and it works well, too. Good battery life. Some keys are laid out a little weird, so I find myself hitting “Backspace” when I want to type a backslash a lot of times — it takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s small enough to work on and doubles as a good media center remote as well.

For a camera, you’re going to be limited to the “official” Raspberry Pi camera, but USB cameras work well with some programs too.

Fair point. In my case, my trackball is wireless, so I can carry it to the couch. I also have a Logitech K400. Used to be $25 shipped, but Amazon woke up and realized how popular and great they were, and now they want another $15. The K400 Plus is $26 shipped, but I don’t know about it. Considering getting one just to have one in both rooms. The K400 is absolutely a wonderful keyboard to have. Won’t measure up to a mechanical, obviously, but for something you can put on your lap on the couch, it goes above and beyond. Again, no experience with the Plus.

I have a Logitech K400.

I want a Mele F10 Deluxe. (It does have Pro and Standard editions which are closer to the one you picked out in price.)

As for the streaming program question, I use Kodi for any HTPC needs, both on a RasPi and on an MK808B.
In case that was not what you were asking, I also use VLC, mpd and pyradio (independently of each other) to stream audio content.

Emulation was one of the primary reasons I bought a Link and I’ve been loving the hell out of it. Granted, I spent a good month prior to the Link’s release just messing with Steam’s in-home-streaming to work out any kinks beforehand, but once things are setup properly it’s totally awesome.

Preface: I use Big Box ( LaunchBox’s bigger brother ) as a front-end. It has some really nice features (like per-game configuration, auto-hotkey integration, multi-stage launch options for things like mounting a disc image and then automatically launching the emulator, as well as handy optional features like log/console window hiding, which works great with Retroarch) and is super easy to setup and use.

The connection from host to router is wired and the connection from router to Link is wireless.

Things I have working through the Link:

3DO (Retroarch / 4DO core; standalone 4DO does not work as it’s Dinput only)

Commodore 64 (CCS64)

NES (Retroarch / Bnes Core)

SNES (Retroarch / SNES9x Core)

N64 (Retroarch / Mupen64 Core)

Gamecube (Dolphin)

Wii (Dolphin)

Genesis (Retroarch / Genesis Plus GX Core)

Sega CD (Retroarch / Genesis Plus GX Core)

Sega Saturn (SSF; Yabause is a joke and barely works with anything)

Sega Dreamcast (Demul; and nullDC to some extent but Demul is far superior anyway)

Playstation (Retroarch / Mednafen Core; ePSXe works as well, though you need to be using Pokopom’s Xinput plugin and -nogui and -loadbin launch commands)

Playstation 2 (PCSX2)

GBA (Retroarch / VBA Next Core)

PSP (PPSSPP; Retroarch has a PPSSPP core but I’ve found it’s a little buggier and performance isn’t quite as good as standalone PPSSPP which works fine over Link anyway)

Sega Model 2 (Sega Model 2 Emulator)

CPS1 (Retroarch / FBA Core)

CPS2 (Retroarch / FBA Core)

Neo Geo (Retroarch / FBA Core)

(other) Arcade (Retroarch / MAME Core and MAMEUI for the few games that aren’t compatible with the Retroarch core; MAMEPlus, in my experience does NOT work through the Link)

There’s a lot of fiddling that has to be done with everything to get it working the way you want. Your primary opposition comes in one of two forms, the first being focus conflicts. Things like log/console windows will try to steal focus from the Link and will inevitably do one or more of a couple of nasty things – throw the stream into the desktop encoder which gives you terrible performance, incorrectly puts your controller into mouse and keyboard mode which will make your emulator close when hitting the B button (which it interprets as ESC), or it just won’t recognize your controller inputs at all. PCSX2, MAME, and other emulators make use of such windows but they can be corrected/disabled.

The other issue is input recognition. Xinput is what you’re after. In my experience, if the emulator has Xinput support, you’ll be able to get it to work once you get passed whatever initial hurdles are presented (special launch commands, console disabling/hiding, etc.) which is what makes Retroarch so great. There are some platforms which don’t have Retoarch cores (like Dreamcast) and some instances where the standalone works better than the Retroarch core (like PPSSPP) but Retroarch goes a long way.

Another thing I would highly recommend looking into is a program called Remote Launcher as it’ll make your life MUCH easier. The main thing that it comes in handy for is creating “launchers” to kill specific programs (your emulators and Steam) and start them (for restarting Steam) for those instances where something crashes or gets hung up for whatever reason. It’s going to happen eventually and when it does this will prevent you from having to get up, run over to the computer and close the crap out, and go back to your couch – you can just press a button on your phone and boom problem solved.

I would also recommend picking up a wireless keyboard/mouse. Having quick access to all those function keys is pretty essential for emulators, in my opinion. There’s also occasional instances where you’ll need it go get around an issue. I’m using the Logitech K400 and it works great with the Link.

Once I get everything squared away to my satisfaction, I’m planning on doing a detailed Youtube video on how to get everything setup.

Depends on your definition of Functionality.

For instance, Hearthstone is a touch screen game, and my TV isn’t a touchscreen, and I’m not going to stand up there to play anyway. I use my Logitech K400 for that. The WatchESPN app also requires me to use the K400.

None of the apps I sideloaded show up natively on the Shield’s home screen, but this app Sideload Launcher does and I use it as a sort of “App Drawer” to pull up all the stuff I’ve sideloaded.

I’ve got a pinball arcade on there too. The controller works during the game, but to use the menu, I have to use the K400…

Hope that helps!

  • 1- My recommendation would be to install Raspbian from noobs, and then follow this link to instlall emulationstation within raspbian. RetroPie is an Operating System that uses EmulationStation, so it has all the emulators you could ever want on your pi and the framework to launch them, but if I’m not mistaken it’s got raspbian running under the hood. You’ll get a better idea of how linux and the raspberry pi works if you install EmulationStation from within rasbian, rather than just installing a standalone retropie image. You’ll be guaranteed the most up-to-date versions of the emulators and the background programs that way, and it would be easier to use your pi for a lot more than just emulation. My current set up is Rasbian installed alongside Openelec using noobs, with emulationstation installed within Rasbian. It’s been working quite well, and it was really simple to do. If you’d like any pointers with that, I’d be glad to help.

  • 3- As for using the apple keyboard, I don’t really know a lot that would be able to help you… I’m currently using this, and it works out-of-the-box. I got it at wallmart for like 3 dollars more than the amazon link. If you do a google search for something along the lines of “raspberry pi apple bluetooth keyboard,” you’d almost definitely find someone who figured something out with it.

  • 4- Same as 3, I don’t have any personal experience but I can’t imagine it would be that hard. A google search should turn up someone who has figured it out.

  • 5- As for your SD card, the raspberry pi will have it partitioned, or separated into different chunks. Basically, what this means is that if you pop your SD card into another linux computer, it would recognize it as 2 or more SD cards that are completely separate. The boot partition where noobs is stored will be in a format that your mac can read, but the other one or two will be formatted in something called ext4, which mac and windows can’t read natively. The easiest way to transfer stuff back and forth would be to either use a flash drive or external hard drive, or to use something like the ssh protocol to send files over your network.

  • 6- Kind of answered this in 5, but the easiest way is over network. That last link that says “ssh” will take you a guide. I’ve got my Pi set up as a torrenting server, so most of the stuff I want on my pi I download onto it directly, but when I do transfer things from my PC, either ssh or ftp work fine. Ftp is a little faster if you’re transferring large files, but it takes a little bit more to set up. You basically just have to install a program that will set your pi up as an FTP server, and then punch in the IP address of your pi into an FTP client like Filezilla on your PC or mac. Again, if you have any specific questions, let me know… But remember that google is your friend. Most of us learned everything we know by googling things one by one that we didn’t understand 🙂

Anyway, good luck with your new hobby! It’s a lot of fun and it’s pretty addicting, and the best part is that you learn a whole lot while doing it.

So I just realized the other day I have my old prebuilt tower just laying about collecting dust and figured I should probably go ahead and just wipe it and hook it up to my living room TV.

Any suggestions as far as wireless keyboard with touchpads and wireless controllers go?

Right now I’m considering this keyboard and either a F710 or Dualshock 4.

I’m leaning towards the DS4 but I have a DS3 and the bluetooth doesn’t work the best as there was very noticeable input lag in fighting games. Is this still an issue with DS4 controllers or perhaps I just have a really shitty bluetooth adapter?

Excellent build. I have nearly identical requirements to you and my rig is very similar to yours.

The processor I used was the A8-3870k (it was cheaper for me than the 3850 in Canada) and I went with a micro ATX setup because the case of my choice was mATX.

You will have no problems with that processor. It’s simply a monster. Plays and processes flawlessly. XBMC runs perfect. I’ve got my OS and programs on a 120GB SSD so everything is snappy!

  1. For the SSD mounting, you can pick up adapters for less than $10 that let you mount them into standard 3.5″ bays. However, someone above mentioned using velcro which is a simple alternative and should work fine.

  2. Wifi cards are a dime a dozen nowadays so you’ll probably have to get a standard card. Just get one that’s wireless n compatible with a solid speed (you can get a wireless n 300 Mbps card for about $30). Your router may not even be that fast so you can adjust accordingly.

  3. I know you said you didn’t want a keyboard/mouse but this one is really good I swear: Logitech K400. It looks nice and is very useful. You’ll need a keyboard whenever you need to tweak things or use the web browser so this thing is great.

I have the K400 and also a cheap MCE remote which is great for non-tech savvy people in my house.

Overall I think you’ll be very pleased with that build. Have fun!

Are there cheaper options that are still of decent quality? I’m sort of set on the case as I would like something that has a sleek, presentable design. I’m uncertain if I need the video card or even that quality of video card for that matter. I’d like the keep the SSD for quick boot times, and just place the OS on there. I have a 1tb external drive that I could probably open up to salvage it for the htpc, so that would be a nice way to save money as well. I don’t know much about power supplies besides that this meets my wattage requirements by nearly 90w and it has great review at being very silent.

Also does anyone have anything to say about this keyboard/mouse option?

I’d setup a raspberry pi on that TV with roll20.net as a spectator.

You can use a laptop to DM and have full view or actually…

You can just do the HDMI extension and use the TV as a second monitor…

Open up the players map in one browser and DM in another. Firefox/chrome.

Only thing the raspberry pi would be good for is players controlling the TV with a wireless keyboard like a logitech k400

It’s basically a clunkier PS4 interface without the ability to browse the web. You can use a handful of streaming services for whom they act as a middle-man. It’s actually pretty dumb.

Better bet would be to buy a cheap computer with an HDMI-out for $100-$200, and something like this to use as a remote.

Costs a little more, but you’re not limited to whatever content provider Roku feels like playing ball with, or their garbage interface. (seriously, the interface is really bad, especially if you’re browsing)

Your Roku must get an IP address inside your parents network.

Are you planning on using the Roku to watch TV on your laptop? If so, you don’t need the Roku at all. You can simply use https://tv.xfinity.com/ and watch using the browser. Get a USB keyboard with track pad and use it as a remote if you want.

But the only way you can use a Roku plugged into an HDTV is to connect to a wifi that itself is connected to a VPN server in your parents house.

The way I would do that would be to get two routers running Tomato or DDWRT and setup one as a OpenVPN server and the other a client. Put the server at your parents, and the client in your dorm room and do a gateway to gateway connection. Any clients in your dorm (like the Roku and your laptop) will automatically get an IP address from your parents network.

If you are just watching off the laptop, then you can run the OpenVPN client. The same goes for an iPad or tablet. Install OpenVPN and connect and you can use it just like you could at home. I use my iPhone and iPad all the time with OpenVPN. Even over 4G LTE (I have unlimited data). Works great.

Contimuum may be a gimmick to YOU but to some it is a pretty awesome feature.

For instance, I can see myself using it all the time. Sitting infront of my TV and want to go on YouTube, or Reddit but don’t want to get my tablet from my bag or my laptop from the other room? I can use the Wireless Display app on my Xbox One and this pretty cheap BT keyboard and I’m set!

Or, I am travelling, which I sometimes do. I take my new Lumia 950 and BT keyboard and this handy portable EZCast dongle and plug it into my TV at the hotel. Boom! Now I can throw on a movie or something for my SO to watch while I answer some emails on my phone. Awesome!

So if you think it is a gimmick, that is fine. To me though, it is the TOP reason I am sticking with Windows Phone for Windows 10.

I bought these 2 for a cheap price on Amazon. You can buy them and then use a computer to download a quick wizard here! to make them use the same usb receiver that u will insert in the PS4, leaving the other usb port free for headsets/other stuff.
They are wireless and work fine. I’ve been using them since I got the game months ago and I love them. When I heal, I immediately turn my mouse on cuz that helps a ton while still using the controller. I think a keyboard/mouse besides the controller are a must have.

For some people this might look like a good deal. Nice packaging, printed documentation, all in a nice kit. There is a market for it and I’m sure they’ll sell plenty.

The bright colors and fancy box do jack for me. And lets be frank. Most children, which this product is aimed at, won’t care either what color the keyboard is or how nicely it’s packaged. They’ll only care what they can do with it, and there’s already a huge community around the Raspberry Pi to give children cool stuff to play with.

You can spec out all of this stuff for almost $50 less and have the newer model Pi. Sure, for some people, this looks like a great deal. For me, without a screen/monitor, it’s no good.

Logitech K400 for keyboard/mouse duty (unless you’re gaming, then a proper keyboard/mouse wireless combo would be better). Additionally a media remote like this for Media Center duty.
