Well yeah, of course it hasn’t been a hit. When there are 4,000 reviews and 1,400 of those are confirmed fake one star reviews, then they’re going to greatly bring down the total rating for an item. Now if this was released in a brick-and-mortar store this wouldn’t be as much of an issue, (case and point this Logitech iPad Air keyboard case which sells really well in stores but is actually quite a poor product) but remember that online reviews are everything in a non-brick-and-mortar business model. If an item isn’t reviewed well then it won’t sell well, because the system is built around a peer-review-styled idea where good products get good reviews and bad ones get poor reviews. When you have an unknown variable throw off an items reviews, the general consumer is mislead into thinking an item is worse or better than it is – which is why company purchased reviews are such an issue. Amazon could technically remove these irrelevant reviews, because they really have nothing to do with their product, but to do so would be perceived as rating manipulation and undermine one of the core pillars in Amazon’s online selling model – trust in the consumer-submitted reviews.
