The goal is to target as many muscle fibers as possible, a bigger range of motion will bring benefit since you are able to recruit more muscle fibers. Overtime loaded stretching will improve your range of motion.

2nd. The part where muscle damage will accure the most is the negative aka eccentric part of the movement, and holding it in a stretch position is some sort of extension of the negative.
