Also, you can use a large colander, stirring spoon, and a lot of lung work to cool your beans, but a bean cooler like this will save you a lot of work and won’t leave you light headed.

I bought this one a while back. It works very well at cooling the beans quickly and does a good job of pulling off the chaff too. It was probably about $20 less when I purchased it and it was a steal at that price. I’d say shop around. If you don’t currently have a way of separating chaff, I’d say definitely go with a two tray design for that purpose. It saves a lot of work and mess.

Bean coolers are REALLY helpful, I wouldn’t skip it. this is the one I have. I think there was a coupon for $20 off when I bought it so you might want to wait or email the seller. It’s nice because it has a coarse sieve for the beans and the a fine sieve for the chaff. It suck all the chaff off of the beans, stores it neatly for disposal and cools the beans fast. It is so much less work than tossing them in a colander and blowing on them. There are also lots of tutorials out there on how to make them with a colander, cardboard box, large PC fan and power source if you want to try and save some money. Don’t try to roast without one though.

You should be able to replace the stock analog thermometer with a K-type thermocouple and connect it to your computer through a phidget 1051. I don’t really know of a video on modding the Kaldi with a thermocouple. In the comments of this Kaldi mini video, the poster mentions taking the thermocouple to your hardware store and finding a couple of steel rings and set screw that will fit to secure it to the stock thermometer mount. I would also recommend bending the thermocouple slightly to make more room for the tryer and get the tip closer to the bean mass. As far as bean coolers go, I use this one. Just drop the beans into it and stir with a spoon until they are cool.
