Interesting, I wasn’t really that set on the center speaker as I wasn’t sure if it would fit where I want to put it. Looks like Jamo S803 LR speakers are only 149$ on amazon for a pair, but i didnt see these under the recommended speakers list. https://www.amazon.com/Jamo-Studio-803-BLK-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B07J288BRK

I highly recommend trying some better speakers to get good sound quality that your very good turntable and collection is otherwise capable of providing. You may not know the sound quailty and details that you are missing and may be pleasantly surprised!

For the best value what is a Craigslist or nearby zip code I can search for used options?

The next step up from the $150 speakers is $300+ amp and speakers. Upgrade the speakers first for the most increase in sound quality. Then upgrade the turntable later for less of an increase in sound quality.

Yes and you will need an amp or receiver to power them.

Also if you are going to upgrade consider also going up in size from the 4″ Edifiers or 4″ Klipsch to some 5.25″ or 6.5″ speakers for any room larger than a small room or bedroom.

For example: 5.25″ Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-150M ~~$479~~ $229 are both a step up in size and quality from the non-premiere R-41.

>Vizio M series 2.1 AIO soundbar but I want to eventually get a separate bookcase for the player and eventually some edifier speakers.

The AT3600 cartridge and stylus on the $129 Insignia turntable if good enough to start with for the $149 soundbar or $99 to $149 Edifier speakers.

If you are already thinking about upgrading the cartridge or stylus consider starting with a next step up turntable that will include an upgraded cartridge. Then to get the most out of a $250 to $300 turntable pair it with some $250 to $300 or more speakers.

A cartridge upgrade on the Insigna may only be worthwhile if you have upgraded to some $250+ speakers however by that point you could also want to upgrade the turntable and a next step up turntable will often already have an upgraded cartridge.

For speakers consider instead of going from the $149 soundbar to $99 to $149 Edifier speakers go another step up to $300+ speakers or buying used for half the cost to make the upgrade worthwhile.

For a TV and turntable consider an AV receiver and then you can later optionally add more speakers for surround sound or a stereo receiver if never adding more than 2 speakers.

First, congrats on starting down this path!

Some interesting responses here.

You absolutely nailed it with that AVR choice, can’t beat it at that price. If that amazon deal runs out, you can get one for the same from accessories4less but that’ll be refurbished.

Regarding bookshelves vs towers, the fact of the matter is that bookshelves almost always offer a better value. (The only time they don’t is in some budget models where the slim increase in price for towers is almost offset by the cost of speaker stands for the bookshelves, so it’s like you might as well get the towers).

ESPECIALLY since you’re planning on adding a sub, I’d say definitely go with bookshelves.

Next, you kinda dropped the ball on your speaker choice, haha. If I’m not mistaken, those models go on sale for next to nothing each year because, well, they are made wildly cheap.

I’d second the notion that it’s best to put as much into your AVR as you can first, then your front L/R, then later add a sub, center, and surrounds as you can. That way you end up with a much nicer system than you can afford all at once.

So, here are my recommendations on front L/R in your budget, all of which have matching centers you can check out too for down the line. Pardon the order, it’s all out of whack price wise.

f your space is small, you can check our speakers with smaller drivers and enclosures like the Micca RB42 (back in stock soon at $150/pair, Micca RB42-C at $200/pair currently, or the Pioneer SP-BS22 for $100/pair. I own or have heard all of these and they are awesome in a small space. Otherwise, go for something with bigger drivers:

CBM-170 SE High Performance Bookshelf Loudspeaker

On sale cheaper here: -$160/pair

Emotiva B1+ for $230/pair

KEF Q150 refurbished from A4L for $320

If you really want to stay in budget and have a full sound, go with the RB42’s and a Dayton SUB-1200 for about $140. Skip on the sub you had picked. Next up from the Dayton is a BIC F12 for $200

Another option in budget for an immediate full sound would be some cheap towers. The Pioneer SP-FS52 are $260/pair and are great value, then there’s Jamo S809’s for $350/pair. Also, there are some DCM speakers on a closeout sale on eBay that are supposed to be good, both bookshelves and towers at insanely low prices so check those out. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions my friend. Don’t forget speaker wire and maybe a wire crimping tool to smooth the install process.

You get 2.1 with the AD18.

Get an AV receiver for the living room TV since it will have better amplification for whole room listening and you can add more than 2 speakers for 5.1 surround sound and have room correction with the included microphone and have HDMI switching. Then move the SMSL and Q150s to your bedroom for 2.0 since the Q center is pricey or you have to find another single Q150 for a center.

AV Receivers:

$150 Denon AVR-S540BT refurbished with one year factory warranty 5.2 with HDMI 2.0B and HDCP 2.2 for 4K video.

Or step up to the Denon AVRX1400 $250 refurbished with one year factory warranty 7.2/5.2.2 for the excellent Audyssey MultEQ XT room correction / speaker calibration even if not going past 5.1. Or a new one for $300 with 3 year warranty.

Speaker recommendations from AverageJoe’s Bookshelf and r/HTBuyingGuide.

Speakers on sale:

JBL Studio 230 $200 refurbished with Studio 235C $130, 2 days left.

3x Wavecrest Audio HVL-1, order on sale here at Ascend $80 each + shipping. “Budget Ascends” To me, competitive with and less cost than the popular KEF Q100.

Jamo Studio Series S 803 $200.

Or are you handy? Go DIY. Kits include pre-cut cabinets. Glue, solder, paint, assemble. Comparable to built speakers costing 2 to 3 times as much.

Budget subwoofers:

Dayton SUB-1200 $148, Dayton Audio SUB-1500 $198, Bic F12 $220, and try the $15 off coupon (with $2 filler item for the 1200). The BIC Acoustech PL-200 II isn’t on sale at the moment. Better SVS or HSU subwooers start around $450.
