Maybe one of these to get the 8 SSDs online, and I’ll do a RAID10 instead of RAID0 on those SSDs, 3x 4 disk vdev Raidz2 for that huge drives, resilvering and replacing a failed one will take a loooong time, imagine if you get another failed one in that process you risk to loose your data.

I wouldn’t put torrents on NVME, just in bare spindles seems a better option, wearing is costly and annoying.

Judging by that beefy PSU… Do you have a GPU for passthrough in there? 😛

If not, you could always go the PERC route – get a controller in there and wham, ports for days. Although cable management would be atrocious. 😛

How about 8 2.5 bays in a single 5.25? 😀

In that case, you could get away with two 2u cases for the servers;
Let’s say 2u for the network gear;
Maybe another 2u for a UPS if you want to protect your gear from outages;
Add in some more space for future expansion….

I’d go with a 9u rack based on your hardware.

As far as hot swap setup for your drives, you could get something like this: https://www.amazon.com/ICY-DOCK-Rugged-HotSwap-Backplane/dp/B00TL4US8K/ and throw it into a 5.25 bay on a 2u server case, like this: https://www.amazon.com/iStarUSA-Server-Chassis-Cases-D-214-MATX/dp/B00A7NBO6E/

That’ll have a SATA backplane, and you can just pass-through the SATA connections directly to your mobo or a SATA card — no need for a SAS/SATA HBA Controller. Simple and cheap. They make hotswap cages for 3.5” drives, too. Gotta hunt around amazon a bit for those. Good luck!

P.S. check to see if your network gear has any screw holes on the sides — sometimes smaller network stuff can be rack mountable and just needs additional hardware (rack ears) from the manufacturer. Usually its 4 small screw holes per side.

Add a couple of these 8×2.5" drive chassis and a bunch of disks to those 5.25″ drive bays and you’ll have a killer NAS to go with it!

Is the one of the MicroServers with the slimline laptop DVD drive or the full size 5.25″ one?

If it’s the latter – and you’ve got an appropriate HBA installed – you can get up to eight 2.5″ 7mm SSDs in its place: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TL4US8K

If not, you can swap the DVD drive at least for one extra, using those adapters people used to use for two drives in laptops: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRI8YFN

Also if you wouldn’t mind sharing what motherboard, ram and where you purchased as I’m planning a similar build soon.

Thanks
